There are people I admire, people who inspire me but I can't say I have a role model. Why would I want to stop thinking for myself anyway? I don't know whether to laugh or cry when I read "this and this singer is a terrible role model!". Celebrities shouldn't be anyone's role models in the first place. Adn even if they seem wonderful we don't know how much their public persona is similar to their private self. Why must people be such sheeps? ------------------ I'm sooo happy! I mean, cappy. You want serious? Ok...I think that generally speaking the only ones who are under a lot of pressure to be good role models are those associated with teen & tween fanbase because parents (and others) don't want kids to get the wrong idea about what's acceptable and how to behave. And it's not just stars or various types of media, a Little Red Riding Hood book got taken out of an elementary school because the basket LRRH was taking to her granny had a bottle of wine. Furthermore they can feel a problem is taken care of by sweeping it under the carpet and want everyone else to do the same (say "there is no bullying" and hope the problem disappears, don't show anything remotely sexual and kids will never have sexual thoughts, LMAO), which is convenient (and stupid) for the adults so they take it very seriously. (Btw, if you can watch the South Park episode The Ring.) Another thing is that so many parents and others don't feel they're involved in their kids lives enough so checking to see that their electronic babysitters are "acceptable" helps them feel more responsible (and thus music, games, and shows that lead to entertainers). In short, they feel guilty so they make a scapegoat, preferably out of someone that makes them feel guilty (so if the TV is the babysitter then those on it become likely scapegoats for parental guilt and fears). This is often compounded by how many adults lose the respect of the kids by failing to live up to their own standards and so adults panic as kids look elsewhere for people to look up to. Kids do it, too. I've heard tweens gripe about Hilary Duff "laying on a bed in a bikini" and teens joining adults in trashing Stewart for cheating on Pattinson (and never mind the married family man who was also her director that she slept with, that was irrelevant to both the teens and parents for their own respective reasons). In this case they're typically treating them as they treat other kids at school and enforcing roles (though that's complicated by their own hypocrisy in that those who are popular get a lot more room to misbehave than others) and by doing so show themselves as superior which their typically fragile egos need. OTOH, some kids (especially the legions disillusioned with the adults in their lives, often with good reason) look for alternative role models, inspiration, and standards and can find them in those they consider a success or otherwise someone they want to be like (or at least "the tribe" they want to belong to, that is if a guy wants to be a wrestler then follows the lead of already accomplished wrestlers, including in embracing their professed and/or demonstrated values, hoping to get to the same place). This is instinctive and natural that goes back to our stone age days in which turning into an adult meant separation from parents and joining the tribe, and failure to join the tribe meant death. That's the primary reason so many teens feel like it's the end of the world if they're not liked or being judged (because for our ancestors it was), though adults do plenty to make it worse (both intentionally to sell products or control them and unintentionally via "helicopter parenting" by keeping them from gaining the experiences they need to believe in themselves in a resilient way), and so do other kids who try to make others the scapegoats to spare themselves that fate (eat or be eaten). And if someone is popular in the crowd then identifying with that someone (or at least pretending to) can make them feel more acceptable to their peers, a need that is tied to their very survival instincts (at a subconscious level) and thus making idols out some entertainers (often more of a fad than sincere). Ok, ready to switch back to the "not serious" mode yet? IP: Logged |
