, and what in your chart suggests it? Or is that just a personal preference? Maybe it has to do with where you grew up also..?

A long time ago people would use umbrellas and stay inside to get pale skin because it was considered rich and luxarious. Ever since the 1920s when Coco Chanel went on a trip to the French Riveria and arrived back with a sun burn, sun tans have been popular. Now people think tan skin looks healthy as they give a glow to the skin and hides blemishes.

I have naturally pale to white skin (caucasian) and I actually like the way tan skin looks. If I could choose one to have I'd go with tan. What about you?

Why isn't this in astro?

I think my skin qualifies as fair. I've got comments on it...Why don't you f off? Everyone seems to be obsessed with frying themselves and I don't get it. Most of them can't even do it properly. I find pale skin beautiful. I don't sunbathe, haven't had for years. It's not good for me anyway. I think a slight natural tan is ok though. If it happened to me I wouldn't be devastated.

I'm very fair skinned and I like it. I burn extremely easily. When I go to the beach, I'm the one with a big hat on, under the umbrella with spf50.

I think other people can look good tanned - I don't prefer it on myself and I don't really appreciate it when people tell me I need some color. No, I don't. I like the skin I was born with, thanks.

Pale skin looks really good on some people, and they carry it with class. When I stay out of the sun my skin can get on the pale side, which for me I tend to look unhealthy. Noticing lots of men like women who are tanned, when I bake like a rotisserie chicken they stare lol. To each their own.

Like actress Eva Green, she looks beautiful with pale skin, but there are people on reviews site that say how ugly she is just because she is pale.

@Im so cappy

I don't know, im so cappy. I wanted to put it in astrology 2.0 but part of me thought this question wasn't astrology related enough, so I didn't. If a mod wants to move it, im fine with that.

@everyone
also I used to be into the whole pale skinned vampire look but now im just not feeling it. What prompted this thread actually was my graduation gift, a sun tanning bed. We got it from a thrift store and its not fully set up yet, but I am so excited!!

I'm an unashamed sunworshipper, coming back to UK from California was soooo difficult! lol

I'm caucasian but tan quite easily, go sort of golden brown and I feel much better with a tan. At my age too I need more Vitamin D (I'm low on Calcium - common amongst women over a certain age - and Vit D/Calcium depend on eachother to work).

I only used to sunbathe for a max of 1 hour day though just to keep it topped up. A good friend of mine in California died of skin cancer (he was naturally quite pale) and I'm aware of the risks.

Libra rising, Leo Venus might account for my love of the sun.

Im pale and I like it because it makes me look like a vampire

Plus I have black hair and I like the contrast but if I spend a lot of time outside I get a really really nice color and glow.
Which is nice because if Im single because I look a lot less unapproachable with a tan.
But if I had light brown and blonde hair I would tan because I like the contrast.

Are you my twin!?! Black hair and pale skin checking in. I don't have a preference (Venus in Aqua does not discriminate! lol) because both are awesome, but I find myself physically attracted to tan skin because obviously I lack it. I just think people should stop trying to be something their not- if your pale rock it, tan rock it!

Thats stupid. Tanning beds and tanning in general gives you vitamin D, so its actually better for your health to be that way... But whatever floats your boat.

I find it kinda ironic you think that is stupid.
Want some vitamin d go outside like everyone else. lmfao
Tanning beds are awful for your skin.. I would laugh at someone if they tried to tell me any health benefits of tanning beds..
there is absolutely none.

but enjoy your cancer and leathery skin..

Yes I think it's unattractive that you are so into looking a certain way you would damage yourself in the process and it defeats the whole purpose..

A light tan looks good on some people. It depends on the person. Pale skin is also attractive.

Since you put it like that, ignoring the Risks could be a silly mistake (even fatal) - especially if you're young:

Tanning beds substantially raise risks of skin cancer, including melanoma.

Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation is known to cause skin cancer, advance skin aging and wrinkling, mutate DNA, and reduce immune system response. Frequent tanning bed use triples the risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Children and adolescents who use tanning beds are at greater risk because of biological vulnerability to ultraviolet radiation.

The US Public Health Service states that UV radiation, including the use of sun lamps and sun beds are "known to be a human carcinogen." It further states that the risk of developing cancer in the years after exposure is greatest in people under 30 years old. A Report of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) suggested in 2005 that policymakers should consider enacting measures, such as prohibiting minors and discouraging young adults from using indoor tanning facilities. Since then, many states have mandated parental consent for persons under the age of 18 prior to tanning bed use.

There is scientific evidence that each of the three main types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma, is caused by UV exposure. Women who visited a tanning parlor at least once a month were 55% more likely to later develop melanoma than women who did not artificially suntan.

Young women who used sun lamps for tanning while in their 20s had the largest increase in subsequent cancer risk – about 150% higher than similar women who did not use tanning beds. Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation induces at least two common genetic mutations. Those include cyclobutane–pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and 6–4 photoproducts (6–4PPs) and their Dewar valence isomers.

The mutation types generally differ between UVA and UVB light. Mutant cells may die, or become cancerous, depending on which genes were mutated. While DNA repair enzymes can fix some mutations, they are not sufficiently effective, as demonstrated by the relation to cancer, aging and other types of persistent mutation and cell death. For example, squamous cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer) is caused by a UVB induced mutation in the p53 gene.

UVA light specifically (sometimes called 'bronzing light') is clearly associated with increased skin aging and wrinkle production. UVA penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB, creating free radicals and reactive oxygen species, which in turn damage DNA. Most aging of skin is due to UVA rays destroying collagen and connective tissue beneath the superficial layer of the skin. UVB rays cause skin to burn and directly damages DNA by interfering with its replication cycle. Excessive exposure to UVA radiation has its risks, which may cause premature aging, including wrinkles, sunspots, and loss of skin elasticity.

---

Taking above risks in considerations - it can be really dangerous for health.
As for Vitamin D - there are better/safer ways: http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20504538,00.html

A person once told me that I should go to tanning beds because of how pale I was. I laughed and refused, of course.

I am usually with people with pale skin but I haven't really given it much thought, it's just the way its happened.

I like when people feel comfortable in their natural color, it makes everything less complicated. None of this:

Omg I'm so pale right now, I've gotta spend some time in the Sun today! I'm ghostly!

Or

Omg I'm so dark, I've gotta get some of that skin whitening cream so I can be pretty.

Mine is the cheapest tan! I inherited : )I love my skin. Its nice n soft and glows too lol. In fact most ppl here are crazy about my skin colour. Foreigners (I live in India) stop me on the road to compliment my looks. Cuz I'm talking about 'foreigners' n most of u r from the western hemisphere pls explain this to me. Whenever I'm out on a dinner date(a proper dinner date) I get drinks sent over to my table by foreign guys complimenting me.What does that mean? Is this a good or a bad thing? No offense I just don't get y they would do it. In our culture we don't do that that's y.
Ppl call me a hottie cuz of my skin n yes must be cuz of my figure too.
I think more than skin colour what would make me notice a person is their personality! I live in India where ppl r Crazzy about fair skin. But wherever I go I'm like a super star. I get noticed despite being tanned!

Everything you just told me is if theres overexposure. Which won't happen to me because I'd be a responsible tanner. I already knew some of the risks, but thanks for looking out for me.
I'd probably build up a base tan starting at 5 minutes a day and going up to ten minutes tops daily. People who tan for like 20 minutes to half an hour at a time turn orange and ruin their skin are just crazy.

I don't mind a natural tan, like you can tell if someone has just been outside in nature and came across it naturally, or they were born with it.

I don't think I look as good with a tan as I do without one, but yes I've also gotten a lot of irritating comments from family members about needing some color. Um, no.

Likewise with being "so skinny!" I hate it when people tell me that. I'm very toned and muscular, and I did not ask for anyone's opinion regarding my skin tone or my body.

My husband is from California, and he loves it when I'm tan from working outside in the summer. I'm sort of like...meh. If it happens, it happens. I don't mind being pale.

But then, I also have very dark hair; my hair and skin tone are two things about me that really can't be messed with and look good. I couldn't go blonde, for example, and I don't look very good with a fake tan. But I do tan fairly easily, so it works for me when it's natural.
