Not sure whether this belongs here or in GU, but as it doesn't lend itself to Jwhop's right/left divide I thought it should be here http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/24/opinion/genetically-modified-babies.html?_r=0 Perhaps this is why they don't care if we all die from poisoning by the food, drug and "right to work" starvation policies? Nothing like derailing a thread you can't be bothered to read, eh, Ami? As far as Chipotle go they have announced they are now "virtually" gmo free, apart from their tortillas... Kind of different to "won't be using" anymore. The article is about the hearing By the FDA about whether genetically engineered babies should be approved. So those with genetic disorders can have perfect babies of their own. Once again adoption is not good enough, we must all have our own, even if they are altered in a test tube (and so not really our own after all) and motherless children get the elbow again so we can play Frankenstein with humans now... This is an incredibly complex area with the whole children who are likely to inherit their parents disabilities.
One of the strongest drives in humans, is that of procreation, after we've taken care of eating, sleeping, and other security. I am in no way against anyone deciding that if they want children, they should have children. What I think is incredibly unfair is that your sentence to me suggests that people should adopt Parent-less children rather than have their own. For me, the bigger issue is why did parents have those children if they did not want them, were not ready for them, or ill suited to being parents? Having a child is a monumental change in your life. It is a decision and choice to me made with considerable consideration. I am all for people adopting if they can, but more importantly, I am an advocate for a more informed choice about whether to have kids. We don't live in a perfect world, and sometimes, people who should never have kids, make that choice anyway, but how can anyone deny anyone else the right to their freedom of choice?

Honestly, Cata, I am soo sick of the whole thing that I can't even read it. My garden is such a work of God that it makes me more enraged about the horrors of Monsanto because they have hubris out the whazoo to think they can make what only God can. ------------------ Want To Ask Any Question About Bible Prophecy? Since when are all orphaned kids due to irresponsible parenting/pregnancies? I understand that this could be used for good reasons but why does everyone have to bear their own child? At the same time as aborrion laws arw getting tougher and religious nuts consider it a crime? And if our environment gets polluted enough, it will be a good excuse for altering the babies rather than clean up our act.IP: Logged |

Why, are you a religious nut? You want to force a 14year old who was raped by her father (or whomever) to have the baby because it's a sin not to? Force vaginal probe scans to guilt her into carrying it on religious grounds?I wasn't thinking of you, Ami; though I find your views misguided you are entitled to them as long as your behavior doesn't impinge on other people's sovereign right to decide for themselves. But... Abortion is not the issue here. If genetic therapy can be done after birth, why play god with fetuses? I suspect that like many other apparently beneficent technologies, this will be used for nefarious profit-above-all-else purposes that will cheapen human life sooner or later.IP: Logged |

I hope the one restaurant I read about -Chilpotes_ which has said it will not use GMOs--starts a trend. Money is the way to deal with this thing, if there is any hope, at all.------------------ Want To Ask Any Question About Bible Prophecy? Go For it. Considering I'm a big fan of IVF and I know so many women that have conceived their children that way, I'm not sure how I feel about the altering of genetics. Not that it matters because how anyone feels, it's inevitable anyway.Already, people can choose the sex and have embryos tested genetically before using them in IVF procedures. I can see how altering genetics could be used in horrible ways but I find it difficult for me to judge someone with a genetic disease who desperately wants their own biological child.
