*This is in now way about Aquaguy. I'm just really appalled by the lack of self anything people have nowadays.*After responding to AG's thread I'm really just flabbergasted by the lack of self respect people have. It really makes me sad and afraid to ever have children and them being exposed to it. I know you can't keep them from it but damn. This crap is ridiculous. What's wrong with the world nowadays? To think that it may possibly get worse seems impossible. Thoughts? Am I going crazy lol? Why can't people keep their ducks in a row? IP: Logged |

BG,I haven't read AG's thread (...do I want to? Lol) but I completely agree. It seems to me that society puts so much emphasis on building self-esteem and confidence (we need these, just at healthy levels) so that we can be the 'best,' but fail to address self-respect. Think about reality tv, people are willing to do anything for 15 seconds of fame and fortune. Same with people who can't say no to things that are bad for them, settle for people/relationships that are bad for them, and compromise who they are to fit in. People may have their confidence and esteem get them to the top, but a lack of self-respect crashes them to the ground. Self-respect is the one thing people can't take away from you and frees you from the expectations of others. More importantly, if you don't respect yourself, how can you respect others? IP: Logged |

@BellaFenice Exactly! It seriously boggles my mind. Self respect isn't an option to to many people anymore. It's all about the money. When DF and I do have children I feel they deserve to be taught the importance of self respect as well as being the best person they can be, on top of giving them the best life we can give them. I'm so sick of people so concerned about what other people think or if someone else does one thing they have to do it too. It's just so weak minded and willed to me. What ever happened to strong people? That's why I don't have Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or any of that garbage. My main concern and focus is my family. I don't need to show it off or update people on what I know I have. That's all that trash is about. People are too concerned with image, when this "image" they're proclaiming doesn't look good anyway. IP: Logged |

Exactly. I'll take a polished turd over fake gold. Eww that's nasty. But you know what I mean. I believe in being yourself, respect yourself. Have the standards that you expect of others. I'll be friends with the people who are willing to give me truth that hurts rather than lies that feel good. It builds trust and I can know that when push comes to shove they'll have my back, or steer me in a direction that is best for me rather than sit behind me, gossiping. If you are yourself, the people that like you, love you or hate you will do so with purity. What you want, you should be willing to give. If you want trust and respect, make your own self worthy of trust and respect. I'm rambling aren't I? Dang it. But you know, some live a completely different way than I do. I don't mind it, but if they want me to play along... Well they probably won't like me but OH WELL. IP: Logged |

Oh, they are very much alive and well. There is no shame in being scrupulous or in having high morals. You just have to find at least one other person to echo that world view for you. IP: Logged |

Semi-OT, but you are spot on about social media! I only have FB and that is simply because that is the only way some of my friends will communicate. Honestly, if you want to talk to me, give me a damn phone call or better let's meet face to face instead of hiding behind a computer. It's really sad to me how many people need external validation from social media. When you hit 60, 70, 80 years old is it really going to matter that people 'liked' your selfies or humble bragging fb posts? Idk sometimes I feel I was born in the wrong era. IP: Logged |

Well, yeah of course! I'm not saying social media is entirely a bad thing, its just some people get consumed by it and use it as source of self-validation. IP: Logged |

I'm going to tell you something by experience. Fools are those who would call others fools. Give that some thought. It's deeper than it looks. And readings go in the personal readings forum. You shouldn't feel disgustingly self-indulgent for offering tarot readings in exchange for readings. You should feel disgusting for using such a talent/gift to insult someone. I personally feel like you create your own bad karma when you do things like that. It's kin to some kind of blasphemy as far as I'm concerned. You should feel ashamed. IP: Logged |

You say that as if previous generations of kids wouldn't have done the same if they had social media. When I was growing up kids were all about bragging, bullying, shunning, and self-image, and often very superficial about it. If my gen had FB we'd have been as obnoxious as those today can be, perhaps more so given that we were worse. (OTOH, at least the media I saw aimed at our age group didn't seem quite as cringe worthy as media aimed at kids of previous generations.) And that's also true reaching back to at least these 60s and probably 50s (if it was different before then I would guess that kids matured faster by not being raised in a bubble within their own age groups and at the same time there were a lot less kids to support much of a "youth culture," plus youth wasn't as idolized back then as it is today). Good news is many of us grow out of it. I've no doubt many today will grow out of it as well. Hopefully they can look back bravely despite the cringe and try to cut the next generation some slack for also starting out as kids (just with new technology to do it with) rather than pretending they were never like that themselves. Exactly!! You and I are definitely on the same page. Maybe we're from the same era lol I feel so much older than I am because of my maturity. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc are only for image for ALOT of people. They're so obsessed with showing off and bragging about their lives(which a lot of times are fabricated lies anyway) to strangers. People aren't social enough, can't have decent conversations anymore. No one speaks correctly or properly. No one can spell. It's just sad to me. IP: Logged |
