What a night it has been. Don't get me wrong though, I say that what I did was for a VERY good reason.

So this is how it went:

One of our Neighbours is a wonderful lady in her late 20s who was married to a douche of a man who was a wife beater. After getting him arrested, she decided to move on with her life and settled down here in our neighbourhood. She is a lovely lady with a lot of inner strength. She decided to leave her pain from the past behind and started dating. She recently hooked up with a guy from Chicago who came to visit her here occasionally.

So at about 00:30 or so, me and my wife were woken up with a few bell rings and a loud banging. It turned out to be her. She had ran to our place in the middle of a friggin thunderstorm. It turns out that she had a fight with Mr. A-hole Chicago and he had tried to choke her; I could clearly see bruises on her neck. She was crying her eyes out and shaking like a leaf. Me and my wife took her in so we could hear her out. A few mins. later, there was a loud banging on our door. I answered and it was Mr. A-hole Chicago telling me that he wanted to talk to her. I told him she didn't want to talk to him and he should leave. He said he wasn't going to leave until he talked to her. I told him that if he didn't leave, I will call the police. He then had to gaul to try to force himself in through my door do naturally I clocked him right in the Jaw. The guy fell, was shaken up but a few seconds after, go up and ran off.

Me and my wife are still consoling our neighbour and are trying to convince her to talk to the police. I have taken the day off from work and will be with my neighbour this morning. My wife unfortunately can't take the day off since she currently works in the Emergency Ward.

If our Neighbour does talk to the police however, I will get arrested for assault but that doesn't friggin matters!

Its a clear case of self-defense right? The guy tried to forcefully enter my house! I legitmately told him to go away but he still tried to force himself in.

The court will most likely drop the Assault Charges but there is the case of Civil Liabilities.

Me and my wife are seriously concerned about our Neighbour's well-being so we do hope she talks to the police. Mr. A-hole Chicago's flight is tomorrow, so the sooner she talks to the Police, the better!

Its about 4:30 in the morning right now and I am wide awake. Seriously, what is becoming of my Neighbourhood?!?!

Are you sure you would face criminal charges for that? That seems crazy to me. I got into an altercation with my sister's ex husband under pretty much the same circumstances and never faced any charges.

Yes I will given the fact that I punched him. A fight happened and someone was physically harmed due to an actions of an individual. That is pretty much solid grounds for criminal charges. Police don't decide as to if the charges in question apply. They just make the arrests. The courts decide as to if the charges are valid.

That sucks, X.. but for what it's worth you and Mrs. X are now in my top 10 coolest couples in the world lol

Actually - though I am not familiar with criminal laws in Canada - I think it would be best to go to the police and tell your story. I think it's clearly self defense but the police might think differently if A-hole Chicago gets there first and says you attacked him out of the blue and has the bruises to prove it. So I hope your neighbor will do the smart and right thing and turn that scum in.

Best of luck and keep us posted!

Did you take pics of the bruises on her neck?

I don't understand why you haven't contacted the police. Some thug tried to choke someone to death and then force his way into your home. That means he's dangerous and the police should be on him.

Yes, please photograph the evidence! Also the choked woman should have gone to hospital for more proof to e put on file.
He forced his way in and before that choked her.
Well...
with no photos of her neck;
no ER visit or cops to witness the bruises;
you have no proof.
Without calling cops and reporting his actions you have no proof.
On the other hand;
if he has no bruises and no witnesses;
then he cannot prove anything either.

All in all you acted very heroically Xodian!

She can and should still go to police. Those kind of bruises dont go away immediately. You should have called the cops but you were defending against home invasion I hope the law there backs you up. Her filing for a restraining order could help you both...?

Thanks for all your replies guys.

So in the end, even after trying to convince her over and over again to call the Police and file charges, my neighbour just didn't want to do it. She still hasn't completely gotten over the trauma of her previous dealings with her Ex-husband and now this suddenly springs up.

However, my wife did.

As a soon to be licensed medical professional, the duty of care if upon her to make sure that my neighbour gets all the help she needs and if that means the police get involved then so be it. And they did.

We just spent the greater half of the afternoon doing statements and talking with officers. As of this moment, no official charges have been laid and to be frank, I do not even know if A-hole Chicago is still in the country right now.

But on the brighter sides, I haven't been charged with anything, and the police are aware of this douchebag. The investigation continues.

But damn... She is shaken up bad. She will be living with her cousin for a short period of time; That way there is someone there to address any concerns that may happen and she has someone with her now.

What a way to end Ramadan . Oh and Happy Eid to everyone who is celebrating .

You have to do what you have to do. It's better to report it than have it be a tragedy later that everyone stayed hush-hush about. Never worry about doing the right thing.

I stand by my conviction reporting criminal behavior is always the right thing to do.

Always remember one thing: If something terrible happens later you will never forgive yourself for not saying something before and you never want to be in that situation so always say when something is going on that could potentially be dangerous.

Honestly unless she gives a statement he probably won't even be charged with anything.. so I agree I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.
