Actually I have heard many police forces will not hire people whose IQ is too HIGH. They are afraid over intelligent people will get bored/frustrated with the job....

I can't prove this^ but it does actually seem that at least the younger generation of police are not overstacked with brain power.

It's the truth unfortunately. I think they chose people who don't have a super high IQ because these people will just follow orders and won't try to take any sort of initiave.

That's my take on it.

That sounds SO annoying. Sorry you have to go through this BS.

I don't think it has to do with IQ. It sounds like a simple processing error, rampant in government organizations and business across the country. Unfortunately! If they could be run in a more efficient manner that would help loads.

I was in a fender bender, and when the cop called in my tag, the car was stolen. The cop could tell I wasn't a car thief, and he called it in again. The lady on the other end typed in the wrong tag number. A gung ho cop would have arrested me.

I got pulled over for running a stop sign at the mall and had to inform the cop that he can't write me a traffic ticket on private property.

The police department here requires a full transcript of your education from high school on and complete background check.

Ummm.. There's a physical test and evaluation and psychological evaluation. It's not easy.

Well, people need to consider the kinds of things that police have to deal with.
Then you might understand some of their behavior.
It's unbelievable the crazy people that they encounter. I'd be on edge too!

Cops actually have to take several tests to prove that they're capable. Just because there are a few asshat cops doesn't mean we should rule them all out. Their job is to protect the welfare of every single one of us after all.

One time I got pulled over for having a burned out tail light and honest to god this cop asked me"do you have any bombs or bazookas in the vehicle?" I said no but I felt tempted to say "yes, is having a bazooka a problem?" But I kept my smart mouth shut

Cops need morality more than intellect.

In Nazi Germany, it was the intellectual elite that was murdering people.

I would take good morals over superior intellect any day.

Of course, I have both

I may be in the minority thinking this but I personally think morality and intelligence go hand and hand. I would not call Hitler's followers intellectual by any means, they were sheep. A truly intelligent person would have been able to see how crazy and stupid hitler's ideas were.

lololol, what? Why did he ask you that? Is having a tail light out now a secret code for bomb?

Re Hitler: I would mostly agree. He actually was very charismatic and charming (ewww), and made it easy for him to persuade and manipulate people. It goes back to people simply believing what they hear in the media instead of learning the truth themselves.

There was no reason to throw in something about Hitler in this thread.

And anyone who read Mein Kampf or listened to Hitler's speeches would know he was all about the morals (particularly regarding marriage, sex, self-sacrifice, family, service, etc, and in context of the day) along with propaganda. Most intellectuals fled the country when they could (they lost Einstein as well who emigrated to the US when Hitler became the new Chancellor of Germany) and many of their seemingly scientific ideas were actually imported from America (not that America formed their ideas in a vacuum), though they'd pick and choose what fit with their ideology just as so many Americans do today.

Schools in Nazi Germany were more like boot camps and Hitler wanted them to learn how to deal with pain and to be strong rather than be educated. But some would be happy to learn that prayer to the Christian god was mandatory in Nazi schools.

I suppose it's too late to get back on topic?

@DeepFreeze, yes but to be fair I believe most cops are only required to have a high school diploma. I'm not trying to be an education snob but.. considering in today's economy it's hard enough for many ppl even with advanced degrees to find decent jobs that might not be saying much imo.

@Ami, I would say the larger problem starts with the fact that most US public schools don't seem to actually promote or teach critical thinking skills... I don't think Americans are inherently stupid, but our school system is set up from the beginning to treat kids more like cattle just taking up space rather than students being intellectually challenged lol. Morality can be a subjective thing but it'd be nice to know the ppl in authority aren't just taking and giving orders without even really processing them lol

@Pixie, I shouldn't even get started on the influence of religion and Christianity lol but yes I agree..

College degrees don't make a person smarter. IMO most of the time all it proves is a person had the means to go to college. I think we place too much value on a piece of paper in today's world. What we need is better on the job training and less "oh you have a degree? You're hired!"

In SOME cases I agree.. just as the engineers that they hire at my work. Some couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. However, I put myself through college, no one else's help. My niece put herself through college with a little help from my sister, who makes less than both of us now. (my sister)
I won't say it was essential for my job right now, but it sure as hell helps!! Plus, an opening is coming up that I'll almost certainly get due to my education because other people haven't even a clue about the things that job entails.

^^^ I would agree with that. Having taught many undergraduates......oy vey. You don't have to be that smart to get a college degree. Believe me, I know many idiots that have a diploma.

But yeah as an example, engineering is one of those majors that without education, you aren't going to understand how to do your job. Some degrees I feel are worthless and people would be better off getting applied experiences, but others you need a formal education.

The think intellect is passing the IQ test with flying colors.

I think soul is empathy.

I think morality is knowing God and following Him.

One can have any or all combos of the three

The first two are gifts, as shown by the charts.

The third is a choice
