Okay, this has been burning up inside of me for a while. So... sexism. It really doesn't fly with me, and I was driving my step-father home who brought along his kids. For whatever reason when he fist bumped one of them, he was displeased and said it was, in a mocking tone, 'girly'. So I ask 'is there anything wrong with being girly?' and he says something like 'it's not supposed to be. I know you're very girly, and that's okay.' or some $h!+ like that. So I continue, 'so out of everything else you could have said, why use 'girly'? (I'm very feminine, but I don't really consider being feminine as synonymous with 'girly') He starts mocking me, saying, 'I'd say Jesus Christ, but would I be using the lorn's name in vain?' When I give him what he should have heard, it's offending devout Christians, I know I've backed him into a corner, and he then goes off on me calling me out for having a C, one C mind you, in an economics class I'm taking, claiming it's 'social injustice to the parents' and how I can't do anything on my own and I should worry solely about myself and material wealth instead of the better of society as he had so elegantly implied. Of course, my mother also did not approve of my 'rebellion', nor do they really appreciate anyone's exertion of power but their own. Then they go on mocking me about choosing stupidity and my own knowledge of Astrology while completely ignoring the fact that I have other merits as well. Excuse me? Someone please tell me I'm not over reacting here.------------------ I call the planets by their Greek names. Now please stop asking which asteroids I'm using? ^-^' -La Sorcière du Temps IP: Logged |

I think you are being way too sensitive. Fathers just say those things to motivate boys to toughen up. It's not an insult to women. If men hated women they wouldn't shack up with them. Men like women but don't want to be women, they want to be men. Make any sense?IP: Logged |

Sounds to me like they're pushing your buttons (and the buttons of the boy, they probably do it to everyone) to maintain control...not that it's necessarily conscious on their part.Try looking up info or books on verbal self-defense, it sounds like you could really use it, both to understand their tactics (which are designed to provoke and control you rather than honest communication) so they're not as effective in upsetting you or throwing you off balance and how, if you insist on communicating with them, how to keep the conversation from getting too off track & dysfunctional. Sometimes people who push buttons aren't even conscious that they're doing it and try to stop when they realize they are (and btw, pointing it out is useless at best and probably counterproductive, they have to realize it on their own which they can if their methods stop working and they start thinking about what they say rather than verbally reacting without thinking). Naturally, you shouldn't try to get the upper hand by using the verbal tricks you read about against them (beating them at their own game) but rather clear your own head and attempt to lead by example. @aquaguy91: still though, isn't there a better word to use? @PixieJane: we ALL know they push people's buttons.Well, I know I shouldn't be the one trying to make it worse, but I don't know. It's kind of subconscious for me to call people out on things. Probably doesn't help either that I was taught, 'if it matters, you'll fight about it'. *sigh* oh well. Thanks for hearing me. ------------------ I call the planets by their Greek names. Now please stop asking which asteroids I'm using? ^-^' -La Sorcière du Temps IP: Logged | |
