My son has a wheat grass business and we get rats. My terrier will sleep on the porch when we want to keep the rats away but I was thinking of getting a cat. I don't feel an affinity to cats at all. How is the experience different?

Ami

I was always a dog person.

But let me assure you...

It's different when it's YOUR Cat.

I promise.

My cats have always found me-- so my experience

is kind of accidental.

One was just sitting on my couch in the living

room one afternoon... little kitten, just wandered

in the door (porch door was open, it was fall)

and decided to stay.

As long as your dog doesn't mind the 'intrusion'

you should be fine.

First off;
getting a cat to prevent rats is near to worthless. Also if the rat had any diseases, including flea borne, or has eaten rat poison;
your cat could become diseased and or die horribly from illness or secondary rat poison consumption.

Being a cat person;
personally I would say no.
Some people can be cat and dog people of course.
However if you have absolutely no urge to have a cat or do not like them "A LOT";
then, no.

There are so many cats out there looking for a good home. If you feel you can provide one with one, i wouldnt hesitate. Do your research first and make sure your dog will be able to live happily with one too. I've met cats that are as lovable as dogs and then others that require their space and prefer to be left alone.

My dog is better around cats than with most other dogs. She grew up with some strays i took care of outside and for the most part they would leave her alone, so i think she has respect for them in that way. Most of them were twice her size and she learned earlier on that if she leaves them alone, they won't mess with her either. We run into strays on walks alot and it's almost like they give each other a nod and a wink and she goes about her merry way. lol Other dogs we encounter are a different story sometimes though. There might be an adjustment period with your dog, but your dog might also find it likes having a cat companion around too. Take it to a shelter and see how it does around cats. If i wasn't allergic, we would probably have one.

I don't know what happened above, I agree with Lexx that if you have no affinity for cats, don;t get one. Not all cats catch rats, my housecat wouldn't.

T those photos are adorable.

Thanks T and Valentine

I am allergic to cats. If I go into a house with a long haired one, I can't breathe.

This happened a long time ago and may not be the case now, though, with all the wheat grass I take

I got allergic from sleeping at my best friend's house, as a child, and having a cat all over my face lol

I was just at their house for July 4th. They have an amazing short haired cat.

The husband is allergic. He went to the pound and rubbed the kittens against his face. This one did not make him sneeze.

I did not feel anything in the house, either.

The animals are not really there to kill the rats but to chase them off.

I would help them from afar at this point. Maybe donate some money to a local organization that rescues cats. It doesn't seem like the right time for you to get one, even if your allergies aren't as bad with shorthaired ones.

Dogs tend to be better rat hunters than cats. Some breeds are better than others. If you are allergic it might be a bit cruel to take in an animal you might not be able to live with. .

I've always wanted to get a cat, but I'm also allergic... badly.. Everything swells up, I lose my voice. It's pretty scary.

My dog and cats love each other. That wasn't quite so true when my dogs were pups, but as they got older, they were fine.

Nice .. I'm sure they'll find you, if they know

you're looking.

They find me and I'm not!

The outside kitty (who lets us feed him) had a kitten

sitting next to him this morning in the patio chair.

Word's out .. pushover lives here.

(Our neighbour is part of the rescue

'underground' that gets strays fixed, free of charge...

we've sent her a few now.)

And like T said... there are so many cats that need

a good home, you won't have any trouble finding one.

I personally wouldn't get a cat with a terrier as they are bred to hunt small mammals..especially as yours is active in that regard with the rats. I'd be very concerned as the hunt/chase instinct is very strong. If your dog has already proven to be well behaved and relaxed around cats then I'd reconsider but the allergy would concern me..it wouldn't be fair on an animal to home it then possibly give it up.
In terms of the affinity..my friend was scared stiff of cats but wanted her kids to grow up with one. The condition was that she chose the cat/the cat chose her...she no longer has an issue with cats and adores her little boy

Nope. I'm a dog person as well and once got a cat with a boyfriend because he was a cat person. Still didn't like cats. At least the cat had him because it got no love from me lol. If you're use to a dog, how they love and give affection, then I don't think you'd feel happy with a cat.

Also there are dogs that can catch mi better than any cat! My dog always leaves little mouse gifts for me. But also don't encourage this because there might be diseases and parasites on mice and they could also be poisoned by neighbors.

I appreciate all the amazing help. I am not gonna get a cat because I don't want to, in my heart.

The rat problem can be helped with natural means, so I am trying to do that.

There are natural things that repel rats, even coyote urine, which is my current project
