Please, nothing negative on here. Keep it Light.I'm of the belief that men and women are of equal worth, but they are different. But what are some of these differences? And are they the result of biology or societal conditioning? Nature vs nurture. I often find men to be more aggressive. And I often find women to be more patient, especially with children. Women tend to have an inborn tolerance to a baby crying, where men do not have the same affinity. That is not to say that women cannot be aggressive. And a baby crying doesn't bother me in the least. Women (in my subjective observations) do appear to be more nurturing, although, I still recall my brother often holding my baby nephew so tenderly. There are no absolutes, of course, but are there generalities that usually hold true? And if so, why? IP: Logged |

Nice thread idea, Randall! Actually I often wonder about these differences, and have found that astrology can shed some light on them on a case-to-case basis…for instance I see in my family how gender roles can sometimes be reversed. As a woman and a mother I'm supposed to be more nurturing than I actually am, and it definitely doesn't come naturally to me, to care for another human being; I attribute my problems with it to Aries Moon (which doesn't like to be tied down or slowed down) and a predominance of "masculine" energy in the chart placements. My brother, on the other hand, has a Cancer Moon and more feminine placements overall, and he's the natural-born father and takes care of his toddler more often and more gladly than the mother herself, who's always busy, a career woman. My brother has unbelievable patience with the child, and was in fact the one who wanted to have it more than the mom, who long hesitated to have any children at all. So, while he is in no way effeminate (quite on the contrary, given his looks and favorite pastimes), he's in a sense not a stereotypical man, just as I'm not the stereotypical woman. I believe in our case, we were born that way, as our parents were rather progressive, open-minded, undogmatic and non-religious (yet spiritual) people, so we got to do whatever we wanted in terms of activities, and nobody ever forced pink clothes on me, or blue clothes on him, or chided us for not conforming to gender-typical behavior. We're only a year apart and basically did everything together and shared most friends and favorite pastimes as children, there were no major differences. The only explanation I can find re: how we turned out is that there are indeed inborn characteristics (maybe these could be seen in a brain scan) which come out differently in both of us, and they are indeed reflected in our respective birth charts. I always feel like there are many more similarities than differences. Or... in any event, I don't feel very emotionally affected by the differences. IP: Logged |

I don't believe there are gender differences, there are only gender roles we are forced to or just encouraged to follow by our conservative cultures. Science supports that theory more and more frequently: "Neuroscientist Prof Gina Rippon, of Aston University, Birmingham, says gender differences emerge only through environmental factors and are not innate." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/sci ence-news/10684179/Men-and-women-do-not-have-different-brains-claims-neuroscientist.html

You might be on to something. I saw an episode of What Would You Do where a young boy in a toy store wanted a Barbie doll. Of course, the boy and his parents were actors. Interesting responses received from bystanders. Some supportive, some resistant.IP: Logged |

I've looked into this a lot over the years and would have a hard time summarizing and defending my views. My views are solid enough that I keep them in mind when I deal with men, and tentative enough that I'm willing to revise them.I feel that modern societies encourage both sexes to have unrealistic ideals about each other, and we have to get past the illusions and re-learn how to appreciate what's REAL, in order to mature spiritually. I think there really are important differences...whether by nature or nurture, that's how it stands now. But as Vajra was saying... Astrological differences are perhaps even more significant. If I Were A Boy by Beyonce[Verse] If I were a boy Even just for a day I’d roll outta bed in the morning And throw on what I wanted and go Drink beer with the guys And chase after girls I’d kick it with who I wanted And I’d never get confronted for it 'Cause they’d stick up for me [Chorus] If I were a boy I think I could understand How it feels to love a girl I swear I’d be a better man I’d listen to her 'Cause I know how it hurts When you lose the one you wanted 'Cause he’s taken you for granted And everything you had got destroyed [Verse] If I were a boy I would turn off my phone Tell everyone it’s broken So they’d think that I was sleepin’ alone I’d put myself first And make the rules as I go 'Cause I know that she’d be faithful Waitin’ for me to come home (to come home) [Chorus] If I were a boy I think I could understand How it feels to love a girl I swear I’d be a better man I’d listen to her 'Cause I know how it hurts When you lose the one you wanted (wanted) 'Cause he’s taken you for granted (granted) And everything you had got destroyed [Bridge] It’s a little too late for you to come back Say it's just a mistake Think I’d forgive you like that If you thought I would wait for you You thought wrong [Chorus 2] But you’re just a boy You don’t understand Yeah, you don’t understand, oh How it feels to love a girl someday You wish you were a better man You don’t listen to her You don’t care how it hurts Until you lose the one you wanted 'Cause you’ve taken her for granted And everything you had got destroyed But you’re just a boy

I adhere more to the epigenetics school of thought and feel that both biology and environment play a role. How could biology not play a role? And how could environment not play a role either? IP: Logged |

I think men usually are more simple and straight to the point. About children crying...I'm a woman and I can't stand to see anyone cry in front of me. Screaming is also a big no-no. I hate agitation and displays of emotion. Mainly because I work hard to control myself so I expect the same from others.IP: Logged |

Such a beautiful song! Thanks for sharing, I'll also check her other work too, I like her a lot As of my views on this topic, let's just say they're a bit too "extreme" to share, since I share them in many ways with radical feminism. So, I'll just grab my popcorn and observe, since this kind of threads can be very entertaining BTW, why hasn't anyone ever made a thread about the gender similarities? Too boring? IP: Logged |

Men have a higher tolerance for thrashing metal music than women. I do not understand how so many can genuinely listen to top-of-the-lungs screaming and like 80clicks-per-minute drumming and be like, "Ah... beautiful." LOL.IP: Logged |

^Funny you mention this, Aquacheeka! Actually it depends, although on average you're probably right about that. However, I love metal, and my mom does too. My Dad on the other hand totally hates it, and my bro is more into gothic metal than other variants. Each year, me and my Scorp guy go to a certain metal festival to celebrate for three days among crazy ass people from all over the world who go mud-diving, crowd-surfing etc….it's hilarious to see all these "wild guys," some quite dangerous looking (many are actually engineers or other kinds of geeks though, quite harmless in other words) suddenly go all meek when the phone rings, and overhear them say things like "Yes honey, I'll come home by 10 pm and bring you some Pizza" IP: Logged |

I feel the same. I think there are a few basic differences, mostly related to the specifics of human reproduction. The rest are the result of the roles men and women played as part of the societal structure. When and if these roles change, many of these differential traits transform too. An example would be the difference in physical strength/power. If men and women perform the same jobs/physical tasks for some time from now on, this difference is expected to disperse. I think the basic difference I mentioned (related to the reproduction itself) makes men PROACTIVE in seeking the opposite gender, and women SELECTIVE. It is unlikely to change much, as long as the reproduction happens the same way. Personally, as a hetero woman, I find men being proactive with seeking and ensuring a partner quite refreshing. There is something vital in men which makes them "plant the seed", an instinctive impulse and calling to create life. While women have conscious/unconscious physical/psychological mechanisms to make sure it's the right seed for the best genetic solution. They go hand in hand and it is a beautiful dance. Which leads me to the most important idea (to me) I have about the differences between genders. I think we are at least half similar, and the rest, the differences, are complementary. Whatever differences there are, they only make the interaction better and more successful. It's a concept we use in synastry matching (at least I do): half is similarity (of temperaments, world views, tastes, values, needs etc.) half is complementarity. The complementarity usually comes from Yin/Yang interaction. There are female and male energies in both genders and when we address this part, complementarity comes not only from matching the Yang energy of the male with the Yin energy of the female, but also from matching the Yin energy of a man with the Yang energy of a woman. Half of the synastry chart would be the two of them being similar; the rest is this Yin Yang symphony. A woman's Mars matching with a man's Venus, and a man's Moon matching with a woman's Sun. We carry our ideal partner, a mixture of similar/complementary, inside, and it is a potion of Yin and Yang energies. Love is alchemy, fire and water combined, and each gender is both fire and water. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nL4kfGpa5E8 ------------------ I seem to have loved you in numberless forms... Yeah, there is actually a lot of research on the way children's toys are conditioned based on color coding and category. Girls are given pink and purple colored toys, and all grouped together so subconsciously they won't go near the traditional 'boy' toys. The same goes for boys, the color schemes of pink and purple never show up their toys, so they are conditioned to believe playing with barbies is wrong. I'll have to come back and edit in my other thoughts in response to the posts. IP: Logged |
