This topic came up just recently on a message board I frequent with many strong opinions - and many beliefs that are factually wrong that people mistakenly define as opinion.

Like: "I'm entitled to my opinion that the Sun rotates around the Earth."

I thought maybe it would make for some interesting discussion here. Not that I'm one to believe that facts are infallible but in debates they tend to be important.

Problems arise when information either conflicts, or is unclear.

I have over many years come to the conclusion that what I believe matters very very little. I have also come to the conclusion that arguing is a tremendous waste of time and energy.
I change my opinions all the time because I have an open mind perhaps, my mind changes, so will someone else's, and I don't need to expend myself to make the inevitable happen, that is just insane. The more you argue with someone the more emotion rises and emotion has this tendency to block perception. We often cannot learn until we surrender. People hate to surrender once into an argument even when the suddenly realize they misspoke, lol.
I suppose I must also admit I have some entrenched beliefs but they don't matter to anyone else, but I KNOW THAT.
I can say the sun will not rise tomorrow
and a dozen fools will want to argue with me, but that is not fun.

I'm with Seimei on this one….sometimes it's not really worth wasting one's energy. It helps to mentally wear this T-Shirt, or something similar:

Helps one draw the line.

I agree with not fighting unnecessary battles and unnecessary Don Quijotism, although I fail miserably at that, many times. Nevertheless forums are usually focused on expressing opinions, and on debates and controversies, at least partially.

I also enjoyed the article, thank you for posting. I dislike when people express opinions about factual matters without checking the facts first. On forums however, many times this comes from a provocative attitude, seeking attention, trolling.

There's also the subjective vs objective type, every person has a dominant type, in most cases. There is also the mixed type. There's always a battle between these two Some value facts and the factual truth, the others value what they feel about something and how it affects them personally or their personal examples, constant personal reference. Being the objective type, the "subjectives" get on my nerves many times, and I'm sure I'm getting on theirs

examples:

Objective vs
. Subjective Information
Objective information
is:
observable: able to be seen, heard or touched, smelled, tasted
factual
able to be counted
able to be described
able to be imitated
the same from multiple reporters
as close to truth as we can get
helpful in decision making

Objective Language:
I saw...
I counted...
I observed...
This is what s/he did.
This is what I/we did.
S/he said...
The sound s/he made sounded like this...
S/he stood in this place.
S/he made an action that looked like this

Subjective information
is:
opinion
judgment
assumption
belief
rumor
suspicion
varies: person-to-person, day-to-day
able to take on a life of its own
not the truth
sometimes completely false
destructive in decision making

(I won't call it destructive in decision making though lol impairing vs empowering, if it comes from a place of good intuition)

Subjective language
S/he did not want to...
S/he does not like...
S/he thought...
S/he feels
...
S/he thinks
...
S/he needs...
S/he was just trying to get me to...
S/he was just trying to get out of or avoid...
S/he was just trying to control me..

EDIT: this refers to subjective vs objective in expressing opinions, because both subjectivism/objectivism as personality trait have their limitations and positive sides.

Vajra,,,,,,,,,
Love the shirt , and I think thatS the nicer version.

And yes,, MoonWitch , it is a great article. I shant need it here at LL, because I can always laugh while other argue here.

What I meant when I said this."I have over many years come to the conclusion that what I believe matters very very little" is that I may be able to change my self and my mind, don't really have the need or the right to change anyone else or their mind. Once I learned that I also learned I can easily leave any debate for others.

unspecified WORM

I edited and it has occurred to me that ,"The difference between Opinions and just being wrong" is simply someones opinion with which we disagree because we all have different facts.
