I try all sorts of authors. I noticed that many of the newer books lack the soul of the older ones, such as Gone With the Wind, for example of an older one. Has anyone noticed this with regular TV and books?

I've had no interest in Gone With The Wind. I don't like the newer trend of.. my brain has gone blank - the groups of three novels, that are all basically the same, with settings and character names changed. Trilogies.

I loved Harry Potter - I don't read much fiction, anymore. I bought The Road, the other night, but then realized that it's a pretty miserable story, and wished I hadn't spent $15 on it. I just needed something that the library wouldn't be demanding back in two weeks, but now I'm wishing that I'd grabbed a Christopher Moore book, instead.

I know you are a huge reader. I found a true genius. Katy Mungor. She is like Lawrence Sanders, if you ever read him. It is detective but amazingly brilliant. I am in awe of her. Read on Amazon.

I buy paperback book lots with all sorts of books in them.

I got a lot recently with Anita Shreve. I read two.

This was an instance of cold characters. The plot was amazing but the people seem very, very cardboard.

I've definitely noticed a decline in the quality of literature. I've also noticed a decline in the quality of: music, movies, video games, and TV shows. Basically everything is becoming more shallow because people are more shallow these days. And if a new book, tv show, movie, video game etc. comes out that has alot of depth to the story and characters people will hate it. Sad but true.

YES I don't watch any TV but maybe there is depth on HBO and the paid channels. Before I stopped watching TV, I loved the Sopranos, Gilmore Girls and some others. They had depth.

I can't believe the difference in modern books and ones written even a decade or a few decades ago.

I think that heart values such as warmth, kindness, sweetness etc not promoted/valued as much now as they were in past literature. Now, the people have sex on the first date and sex is the main theme of the book lol

Yes, I'm craving autum/winter reading (our summers not great) like old classics which I think of as slow-cooked food. But I like contemporary fiction too like Haruki Murakami who has surreal stories, but still some older devices in storytelling. This kind of fiction I think of as the leaner, artfully presented, intelligent flavours of new cooking. But yes, the soul seems less discernible sometimes.

Watched a lot of old films though recently and realised that apart from the classics, a lot of these were unsuccessful. And some newish things like breaking bad really have mastered their medium and have so many dimensions. But whether they'll be seen as classic and do have depth / soul, not sure yet.

Check out Victoria Holt, F. She is AWESOME, AWESOME. I think she is my all time fave author surpassing Stephen King, who has been.

I will have a look for one, thanks. I rarely read scary books so much as Id love to read Stephen king it hasn't happened yet (though I just found out recently they aren't all like that) - someone only told me about reading 'IT' and I couldn't sleep for days lol.

It's the best thing to find an author who you like

Victoria is not scary, per se. King is not scary as much as deals with good and evil. The Stand was the book that helped me to find God. It was my all time fave book until Victoria. I cannot get over how wonderful she is. Read the reviews on Amazon.

I do not like the scary books by King such as It. I like the one with character depth, ALTHOUGH the scary ones, usually, have good characters, too.

The newer ones are not very good, beginning with Misery.

I think he got lazy lol

I think it was his short stories I've been recommended before - the stand?

Edit I just saw your first reply the covers don't look great but they do have good reviews. I'll let you know if I get one.

We live in a capitalist society. Its only about making money. Someone might have an amazing soulful idea but if they cant fund it then that idea is never seen. In the same vein, sometimes they will try to be too deep and it comes off as pretentious because they are only doing it to seem deep while still sticking to the formula that gets money.

I agree. You cant just say the older the better because we are only seeing the most popular films that have survived all these years and remained in our memories.

Here's what kills me.... Back in the day you had to have musical talent to be a popular musician. As recently as the 70s and 80s there were lots of musicians that you wouldn't call attractive but they were amazing artists! Nowadays? All it takes is good looks and autotune. Seriously! I can't think of a single popular mainstream musician that isn't conventionally attractive. This whole world is becoming more and more shallow.

I am reading an awesome book by Katy Munger. I will link it to show you. She is modern but is not fake and politically correct with her characters.
