That's such a nice memory to have Faith.

I really don't remember my first bike ride.

This was actually interesting. I had a hard time learning to ride a bike on my own. Of course my parents, esp. my Dad, helped me (is that a father-thing,b tw? Teaching children how to ride a bike or to swim?), but whenever I realized he had let go and was no longer supporting that bike, I would panic, scream and it did not work anylonger.
In fact I felt abandoned and deceived whenever he let go of holding or steering the bike, despite saying he would not.

In the end I learned riding my bike on my own. I was down in the yard behind the house we had been living in there at that time and always going round in circles, one foot on the ground, then changing the foot and so on, I did that for several minutes and then I suddenly forgot when switching feet to put one down on earth for support again, so they were both on the bike, and still I did not fall. So I learned riding a bike by going in a circle. LOL

I remember the training wheels but not the exact moment they came off and I rode. I remember the EXACT moment I learned to read. I remember when three letters came together into a word. That was one of the most magical moments of my life!
This thread sparked an idea for another thread!

Cool thread Faith!

I clearly remember as well.

I had been watching my Aunts ride for days. Thinking my big 5 yr old self understood the mechanics of it, I propped the bike up on a short tree stump, started pedaling and off straight into another stump and into the muddy creek.

I had forgotton to watch how to stop the bike.

Muddied up, knee bleeding and fender dented, I gimped off to tattle on myself.

My youngest Aunt took pity and taught me to ride proper.

My next big adventure was a bicycle built for 2 driven by my speed demon cousin that about killed us both... kids were tougher back in the day

This is one of my fondest memories of my father. He wasn't around much.
