HOW many times have you heard this word used??
"COOL"
The word "Cool" has replaced SO many possible adjectives & shades of meaning.

I see this as a very bad sign.
Young people use this word for LACK of other words.
They simply LACK other words.

It is a sign of vocabulary being REDUCED.

Is society regressing..?
Young generations going backwards in ability to express themselves?

Loss of Vocab = simplification of thought.

Simplification of thought = simplification of the Mind

HOW can this be a good sign?

How can SIMPLE minds ever grasp such concepts as indoctrination, let alone recognise when its being used against them?
HOW can SIMPLE Minds fight a system that works against them, when they can't even grasp that it does?..

ETC ETC..

I haven't heard kids use the word "cool" for awhile now, at least not as commonly as previous generations did (though I've heard characters on shows aimed at kids use it a lot, and Demi Lovato came out with Cool for the Summer not too long ago, so I'm sure some do since everyone tends to imitate the characters they like). Even when they did the tone usually made it obvious what they meant. (What I hated was when "sick" was used as a way of saying something was cool/awesome. I'm glad I haven't heard it used that way in awhile. Now they can use "sweet." ) Maybe school vids and ads for kids trying to be "cool" using the word "cool" (like "cool tools" which was a phrase for very bad advice on handling bullies that was shown in a video to school kids around here who rightly held that video in contempt) probably have made the word a bit uncool.

Wait, I have still heard it used as in "there's no trouble/hot tempers between us" ("we're cool" or "are we cool?"). Otherwise if they use it commonly then it will be some cute way (like "coo"). And I've got to "throw a shout out" to "chillax" (a new version of "be cool").

Kids are actually doing better, generally speaking (unless there's been a recent change in the last couple of years). I base that on statistics, GPA, increased literacy (which we can probably thank Harry Potter for), less teen pregnancy and drug use, and quite a few other things.

I agree with you to SOME extent.

However, "cool" has been around since what, the 50's or 60's (at least when it was popular) and I think we've made a lot of progress in science, technology, and other things. It's of course pretty much impossible to say what impact it's had as we don't have an alternative to compare it to.
We've also survived, rad, sweet, bad, beast, epic, etc etc. I forget some of the 80's ones. LOL I wish I could remember them.

I wouldn't worry.
What worries me is that the answer to world, individual, and social problems is increasingly becoming violence. Senseless killings.

You do realize that your thought process in this is actually called an Association fallacy?
A = B
B = C
therefore A = C?

Beside, you're basing your conclusion on the use of slang, which has formed and edited itself depending on the group (and the year) in which it was used. Why? It is a cultural trademark that has been used since language itself has been invented and doesn't signify, by any means possible, that they lack other words.

It is, by no means, a "proof" of the simplification of the mind. Everyone uses their own slang. EVERYONE.
It is not because youngsters do not use a form of formal or literary English, barely used in today's society when faced with verbal exchange, that they are automatically akin to being simpletons and are an irrefutable evidence of the regression of our societies.

Also, it is not because your mouth is producing gold, that your mind is capable of the same. Basing the intelligence of people by their attempt of integrating themselves into different sub-cultural group through their way of speaking, even though it may be less than idea, is actually not the proper method. Not the proper one AT ALL.

I'm telling you, personally, if I was to talk to you in person I'd have used maybe a third of the words I currently wrote. Had I written this in french, it would have been the same. And you could probably add grammatical and syntax mistakes in the mix too. I would have used slang, though I do emphasize on good pronunciation.
The way I speak doesn't equal the way I think, nor the way I process information.

How you feel about the word 'cool' is how I feel about the word 'like' and its excessive overuse. Example: Instead of saying 'she said' or 'he said' when referring to what someone was talking about, people seem to love saying 'and she/he was LIKE...'. I also HATE to hear myself doing it! It weakens the vocab like nothing else.

I asked some kids and they say plenty of kids still use it, though older movies where kids keep saying "cool" every chance they get come off as funny to them. So I guess it's not as much. One said she and her friends almost never used it but plenty of others at their school did.

And here's a history on the word "cool":

Haha I am on the other spectrum. As long as i can get my meaning across and I can understand what the other person is trying to get across Im ok. Because no matter how many big words you use, they can never fully convey the whole message.

OH ..YES!!!
I forgot about that one,it's actually far worse !!!
In fact I should have made this thread about THAT one!!!!!
I was sitting on a bus for couple of hours,
Couldn't help overhearing young female
behind me..
She was a University student (in USA this is called College)
EVERY OTHER SENTENCE she used .."and I was like..."(etc) .."and she was like..."

On & on she went...in this manner!

I truly wondered about the standards gone down. (I mean, HOW could s.o. even write an essay..If her own use of grammar was so disabled as to talk like that?!!!)

If it wasn't cool it would be another word. The girl seems to be stuck in repetion :-D

I like saying cool, but not all the time. And it's certainly not appropriate to use the term in a professional or academic environment...

OTOH, the Illuminati haven't degraded youth here in the US as much as Japan:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIKqgE4BwAY

Once the haven of tradition, respect, self-discipline, and education, that's what ALL kids in Japan are like nowadays. (Also, for girls to demand to be given chocolate is a reversal of gender roles, as explained here, but the villainous Illuminati will do everything to turn society upside down...even though they supposedly rule it already, they want to destroy it all, because they're a bunch of bored Scorpios! )

Okay, a very few Japanese girls have resisted the Illuminati...here's live footage of it (language warning, the Illuminati do NOT like being thwarted by little Japanese girls!):
http://youtu.be/IIE8Fq4Zm1E?t=10s

But as for the rest...give them chocolate, or they'll give your souls to Satan.

Tbh, I'm more likely to say 'cool' meaning 'fine' to END a conversation.

Example

Person: Ikja, I think you're rubbish.
Me: Cool.

I seldom use it to describe how good something is!!!!

Cool is old slang. People have been saying it since before the 1950's and it became popular because of the jazz crowd.

Young people come up with slang to stand out from old standards and ways of thinking. They are stretching their wings and challenging the status quo.

No big whoop. <~~ see what I did there? I have a high IQ, I'm writing a novel, I have a decent vocabulary and I say things like 'awesomesauce' and 'sweet'! (oh and I'm not even young anymore!)

You have got to realize that the words people use change depending on the audience they are speaking to. If they are corresponding with/writing for their boss or college professor they will be very formal and use bigger words but if they are talking to friends or family they will be informal and use slang. It's not even unusual for different social circles to have their own secret languages and inside jokes.
