I am pretty sure most of us should have watched the new Starwars movie already (I sure did; A bit disappointed by it but that's a discussion for another day.)

So let your Geek side out and pick a Lightsaber based on what you think are traits that best apply best to your personality .

Refer to the following charts:

I am def. purple. Adherence to just the light side or the Dark Side is for losers! Take the best of both worlds and adopt it!

It was as if the entire movie was made from the ground up to be just a big Nostalgia trip for the "Old" Starwars fans. There was just no sense of innovation in the movie. BTW: Either the Empire / First Order is seriously trying to overcompensate for their size or they have douche for Brains for Engineers who always build super-weapons with obvious "hit here and the whole thing goes boom" design flaws.

And I am not even going to begin with the Antagonist. I was expecting a Darth Vader "evil personified" type Character. And what do I get instead? A re-incarnation of Anikin the Emo. Come on JJ! I was expecting better!

Personally, I think that the material from the Knights of the Old Republic or the Fallen Empire Starwars game would be ideal for a Star Wars movie as compared to JJ's version of "A New Hope." You have PLENTY of interesting and conflicted characters, you have absolutes and middle ground ideologies at work and you come to realize that in some aspects, the Jedis are no better in their ideologies than the Sith; Especially when it comes to "adherence."

My lightsaber is probably purple. Green might fit too, but I am far more likely to be a balance of light and dark.

I'd probably be green.

As far as the new movie, I see where you're coming from, Xodian. The plot does take a lot from "A New Hope". However, at the end of the day, I enjoyed it. It had more of the feel/vibe/aura of the original films. It focused more on subtlety and characters - instead of flash and "wow" factor like the prequel episodes. For example, there were distinguished x-wing pilots that you cared about, not the multitudes of ships that filled the screen like in the prequel.

New characters are pretty good so far. My favorite is the new droid, BB-8 actually haha. Acting is great.

Not sure how I feel about Kylo Ren. He's evil and heartless for sure, but the fact that he barely held his own against Fin in a lightsaber duel and pretty much got his ass kicked by Rey makes me question his worthiness of his position. Fin and Rey had never fought with lightsabers before. Kylo hasn't fully developed his fighting technique nor his mastery of the force. He just seems like an angry, uncontrolled kid. Maybe it will make more sense when the story progresses in the next 2 films.

Is it perfect? No. I'm sure a lot of diehard fans can pick it apart more than I can. But overall, it was entertaining and had a good balance of story, action, drama, humor, and the feel of how Star Wars is supposed to feel. JJ was a good choice to direct. Lucas created the franchise, but he's long lost his touch of the art/sensibility of Star Wars - the prequel episodes are an obvious example of that.

All that said, the original trilogy is immaculate and I don't think it will ever be topped.

But there in lay the problem and this something that has always been an issue with JJ and his attempts at making Sci-Fi movies.

Sci-Fi movies are equal part "World Building" and equal part Drama. Starwars is basically one big Space Opera where the setting DOES matter... A LOT! The prequels undertook the World Building aspect of Star Wars very seriously; So much so that they ended up inspiring concepts for multiple novels, series and games. However, Lucas ended up focusing so much on World Building that he completely ignored the focus on the individual characters of the Opera in question; Which led to people not really connecting with the characters in the prequel.

JJ took the exact opposite route with this new movie. He just tweaked mildly here and there with the world building aspect of the movie (I would go as far as saying he did absolutely nothing and just copied "A New Hope") and focused more on individual characters.

That is good and all if you are making a Dramatic Opera but for avid SciFi fans; Its just lazy writing.

I am sure I am going to take a lot of Flak for saying this , but IMO it can be! There are games related to the Star Wars Universe whose trailers have proven that you can indeed use material from the Expanded Universe and create characters that Audiences can invest in emotionally; And at the same time, Sci-Fi fans get to experience something new from the Star Wars Universe all together.

I already posted one trailer from the Fallen Empire game. Here is another from "The Old Republic."

You have some valid points and arguments, Xodian. True, the "world-building" aspect is lacking. But as the 1st movie, it's possible that the director wants to establish a relationship between the audience and the characters before really going all out with the universe. Maybe he's not playing all his cards on the table yet? I know what JJ is capable of - like the settings in his Star Trek films. I won't truly judge this trilogy until the second film (which is probably the most critical, IMO).

Yes, the characters are his main focus. But there's the vibe and the feeling too. You can't exactly put your finger on it - it's the combination of the "opera", occasional lighthearted moments, a tinge of that 70's cheese...something. It's that very essence that Lucas failed to implement in the prequels. Perhaps that "essence" of Star Wars was partially a result of Lucas being limited by the technology in the 70's?

That youtube clip you shared is badass, and very technically impressive. But if you take away the lightsabers and the force, I don't know if I'd be able to distinguish it from every other sci-fi media.

So I agree, JJ could do a better job with world-building. But without characters, the world is just distant and there's nothing to emotionally invest in. I strongly agree with your criticism about the film rehashing "A New Hope", there's no denying that. I even remember chuckling to myself how ridiculously similar it was. But despite that, for some reason I still enjoyed it! Haha

One thing that I really wish had happened was they made a movie on "Shadows Of The Empire". It's the missing link between "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of The Jedi". I read the book and it would have been a nice opportunity for the films to continue into the darker and more intense side of the story where "Empire Strikes Back" climaxed. Of course, the book was written in the 90's so the actors/actresses were too old to resume their roles.

Damn, I hadn't thought of Star Wars this much since I was a kid. I feel like I'm 8 years old again.

I looked at this movie as character-building.
