My wife and I have discussed before and both are totally in agreement. Before it was kind of just talk but now there seems to be a genuine seriousness about it.
We think about leaving the U.S. in the next few years. (2-5)

We're sick and tired of all of the issues here. Politics are worse than ever. The crime rate. The racial tension. The riots. Other things also but really just sick of all of the BS.

We keep thinking Canada. For several reasons including that we wouldn't need to be TOO far away so that we could visit family and such.

I have, but not in a long while.

That said, there's BS to deal with everywhere (and I had a variety of reasons for wanting to become an expat). And then there's getting a job, finding a place, etc, which are even harder as an immigrant (even if you find other immigrants as yourself willing to lend a hand, they tend to take advantage of newcomers, sometimes to a criminal degree).

Canada sounds like "America lite" to me (though they have their own priorities), but much less of what you find troublesome about life here in the US. And keep in mind that unless you pay taxes to Canada then you'll pay more for Canadian healthcare (as it's seen as a shared burden the citizens pay for and thus loathe to offer anything other than basic lifesaving services to any not paying taxes into it), though I hear Canadian friends will often purchase what they can on behalf of their American friends (and even paying as a foreigner it's still cheaper for an American to get healthcare in Canada than it is in the United States). It's also worth noting that once you're a tax paying citizen that you will pay more in taxes than in the US (though this hasn't stopped hundreds of thousands of Americans from immigrating, and plenty find the higher taxes worth it).

At least some Canadians want Americans to clean up their own backyard rather than moving to their nation. They have a lot of land, but very few cities. As typical, the rural regions tend to be less friendly to immigrants.

Thanks for the reply Pixie.
There's a lot to think about but also some time to think about it.

As far as not being liked. I'm pretty much mostly an introvert and don't need many to connect with. That is unless people were to go out of their way to make life difficult.

I have, but not with a lot of seriousness. If I were younger, I might think it about more seriously.

The last time I looked, I could not qualify to immigrate to an English speaking country (my income was not high enough, and I'm not qualified for the jobs that are in demand).

The "America is the greatest country in the world" crap is just that. But it's home and I feel like I have an obligation to try to make it better, if only in small ways.

Yes, but things aren't much better in England. My sister was talking about Canada (she emigrated, two years ago), but it isn't an option for me or my dad, right now.

I day dream about it from time to time. I've even considered moving to countries much further away than Canada, though I think things aren't much better in other countries. Even in countries with universal healthcare and free education, the tax rates are higher than they are here. I suppose it would be a huge benefit if I ever decided to have a family because I wouldn't have to worry about those things as much. Mostly I think I just long for a change in lifestyle, from time to time. To see something different, experience something new and immerse myself in a new culture. (What else could be expected of a Sag MC and Pluto in 9th house.)

But I'm super close to my family, and since I wouldn't go anywhere without them, that basically answers those questions for me. I'm just as happy reading travel books, learning a new language and daydreaming about it. I could also see moving to another part of the US as a good option for changing things up without leaving my home country. Or traveling for fun and leisure.

@SV

growing up say about 2-4 years ago i thought that canada was boring. would be nice to be somewhere else.

as time passes. the US is diminishing in rank of the best place in the world.

Canada is raising. More and more countries are just being laid evident how much it must suck to be there. Poor countries.

Canada is raising to be one of the best places in the world. Top 3 I tihnk. Just 10 years ago it was several more down

Its relative. Depends on where your source is. If I listen to fox news, I will probably hear about how good trump is and how he will save America...yadyada.

Then if I switch to CNN I will hear he is evil and Clinton, although not perfect is a better alternative...yadada.

Again its relative to the source of the info. The average newspaper will say positive things about Canada.

But, if you read Science, Engineering or Businesse magazines there is a deep concern about how progressive and competitive we are.

For example Canada fell from within the top 10 for science and math to half place in less then 10yrs, thats a dramatic drop in a short time. In contrast the US has maintained its position.

Frankly, Canada...hmmm I'm not cheering for it, but I'm not frowning either.

Pros:
-----
-Universal Healthcare
-Well ranked universities at much lower tuition costs then the US.
-More appreciation for the outdoors.

Cons:
------
-Heavily taxed for people earning above $80,000.
- Generally a lower middle class income, unless you live in and around the Toronto area.
- Very anti-urban
- An aging population, only second to Japan
- An economy trying to rebound after the decline in commodities.

The biggest problem in Canada is the population distribution and where the main industries are located.

Unless you reside in the Windsor - Quebec City corridor where 50% of the population resides. You won't necessarily see the same type of employment.

The other problem is because people are anti-urban many town and mid sized cities will always be less then <500,000 persons.

Smaller towns means less buying power, items will be more expensive and less economic growth outside of commodities, resources or tourism.

Try goggling prices in Nunavut for basic items and you'll see what I'm talking about.

The other problem is because our population is aging much faster then the US there are
questions and doubts if we can keep universal health care, since more people will be retired then then working and paying are taxes.

There is a lot of problems on the horizon for Canada too. From my experience so far Canadians aren't the most forward thinking and progressive when change needs to be done to prevent disaster.

Yes, at times. The positives and negatives of this country are too much to go into. So many great places. But then again, there are so many beautiful places in the world.

Scandinavian system of government is appealing to me, and in the happiness studies they are always featured at the top. Also, Sweden and Denmark's use of alternative energy is something we should all strive for.

I liked being in France when I lived there for a summer. Mostly, I would like to continue to travel. It would be difficult leaving my parents, family behind. I would like to live in another country for a time period though.

Canada will be hit with a major recession as our export industry will suffer as US becomes more nationalistic under Trump.

Canadians have just as much GDP debt and household debt as the US per citizen and we've been living in a housing bubble that will be worse than the US because the 2008 housing bust in the states didn't affect us as much. Property in Vancouver and Toronto housing is 15-20 times median household income and as interest rates rise and housing prices drop, with a declining currency, the entire economy will retract as good money is withdrawn to pay off these ridiculous debt margins.

So, if you are planning to move up here, I hope you're either a nurse or in a profession that is recession proof.

Just my 2 cents.

Currency Forecast

Having said that, as I see the USD becoming very strong against the CAD, if you time it right, you can probably pick up a nice property near the lows of our bubble pop when your currency is at its strongest its ever been against us in a long while.

Yes, but compared to other places Toronto, GTA and the Golden Horseshoe is the most dynamic and diversified region in Canada.

Economists have been saying Toronto real estate will correct since 2007, nothing has happend. In other places of the country you are seeing the effects.

For example in Ottawa you whould be shocked if I told you, you could purchase new condos for under $200k
http://www.ottawacitizen.com/homes/condos+under/9394989/story.html

Why? again which city has the employment thats the least commodities driven and most diversified?

Trust me when I say this Toronto will weather the storm the rest of country is on "dumb luck".

I said this in another thread, People in Ottawa still haven't learned that public service jobs aren't always permanent.

With growing national debt and an economy thats not growing...a lot of people in Ottawa still haven't clued in that you can't raise taxes, but you can cut public service jobs.

Thats why I said outside of the GTA and Golden Snowshoe region people in Canada aren't very forward thinking.

My two cents...if your coming here don't settle for anywhere else but Toronto or Vancouver. The rest of the country will be hit hard, but these two places will weather the storm

Generally I think many countries have the same universal problems.. crime, poverty, rotten politicians etc

Leaving your country is a huge step and several adjustments so you and wifey consider all your options carefully before taking the plunge.
