I wasn't sure where to post this, so if it is in the wrong place feel free to move it. Anyway, I've been reading Star Signs and something really puzzled me. In the introduction, she compares astrologers to preachers and other spiritual authorities. She then talks about how it is wrong for preachers to make money through preaching and even warns that making money through spiritual work will result in one losing their gift. However, immediately after that she acknowledged that it is unfortunate that astrologers dont have a church where donations support their work. So, did she condemn astrologers for making money through astrology or not? It's not really clear to me what she was trying to say.IP: Logged |

She said basically that this is wrong. She herself didn't earn money through astrology but through writing, which is fine, according to her, even when the subject is spiritual knowledge.IP: Logged |

That seems strange to me. It's also convenient that she deemed it ok to make money off of astrology books when she wrote a best seller. IP: Logged |

Sorry about that.}} I 'just happened' to catch the title of this thread from the general list. About Linda not charging for astrology chart work, but charging for her books, writings, etc... That's what some inspirational teachers, philosophers, and preachers in churches have been doing today. These (mostly) do not charge directly for their inspiration, but ask for volunteer donations. Where they DO make their monies are through side-businesses of publishing books and making CD's available for purchase. It's a choice to be able to buy the books, CDs, etc. But the material was already shared in public for no charge, or small voluntary donations. I remember seeing a video-biography on Isabel Hickey (long time ago). She set aside one day a week where she 'offered' (to God, Cosmic Higher Spirit) whatever earnings she would have made that day, as a personal act of Spiritual Service. (This allowed people to get readings who otherwise would not have been able to afford one.) IP: Logged |

She was speaking of the Spiritual Teacher/student relationship. No money shall pass hands. Being a writer/author is a different matter entirely. What most Astrologers do today is hardly a teacher/student relationship. Charts were also cast by hand and interpreted thusly in Linda's day. IP: Logged |

It's true that you don't see much of the spiritual teacher/student relationship between the astrologer and the client these days, though it should be a spiritual relationship of that sort. Astrology is an esoteric teaching, and as such should be given for free. Linda argued that knowing how to write is an exoteric skill, and so should be rewarded. It's a profession. How would an astrologer who doesn't know to write well make a living? I don't know, but not through astrology. Linda is (not was) an excellent writer, and she deserved the money she earned. She also practiced giving half of her earnings to charity, so you can't really blame her for being greedy (unless you remember that according to her, you get twice of what you give away...). But anyway, she gave much of herself, and she didn't make her followers and readers poorer. IP: Logged |
