Even for someone like myself, that always wanted to be a psychologist with a broad insight into the REALLY sick minds out there, have a hard time grasping things being done to a baby of maybe 8, 9, 11 months. And then the asshol-s that sit and download this sh-t?! Some maybe for fun??!

That aside, keep in mind that the news, even when honest, tend to distort things a certain way. Your shock and moral disgust was intended, because it gets people to talk about it, to tune in to learn more and get others to tune in, and then they sell ad space which is how they make money (so from a certain point of view, that news agency were also exploiting these children already exploited in porn). In this case, I bet of those 15,000 IP addresses, the vast majority were of underage teens, and only a tiny minority were after anything below a certain age. It's possible that many of these IP addresses were merely suspect or had stumbled across such sites by accident, or got hijacked by malware (probably while looking for more regular porn). In addition, plenty probably used multiple IP addresses in trying to cover their electronic tracks. But stated as it was then it looks as if there are 15,000 people in Sweden who are turned on by the sexual abuse of infants.

But then that aside, I bet those were your standard IP addresses. Criminals who use the net tend to use criminal/black market browsers (think of them as the illegal version of Google with powerful encryption that require encryption keys given to clients to be able to access with it being just "static" or even invisible to everyone else who tries to access it, and criminals who sell their services and products have an incentive to make sure their clients make use of such internet tools) as well as all the more common ways to hide your IP address, which could very well mean that the number is much higher (if including child porn for all ages under the age of consent then it wouldn't surprise me if the police would have say 150,000 to track in many countries, possibly even Sweden, and would include cops using such vile services). On top of that, plenty would prefer more low tech methods of selling their vice, which means no IP address at all.

There may be commonalities between those who abuse young children, however, each one is a case study in their own right.

What I mean to say is that the reasons are as deep and as complicated as the person.

That's the reason I am against the death penalty for these offences. The reasons for the offence are within the mind of the perpetrator. To understand them, we need them alive. It's more dangerous for children when we don't understand the minds of those out to harm them.

The unfortunate thing is, the criminal justice and mental health system are afraid to go there. Would society even allow it? Would the media stop caricaturing both victims and perpetrators?

Personally this makes me want to vomit as it disgust me to no end.

For someone to want to molest a child they are driven to their innocence. Their minds are still that of a child and in some cases they don't understand that they are even hurting the child.
For some others , it is what they had done to them so therefor the carrying on the patterns of abuse, not in most cases but it can be.
For some it is a matter of hurting something as in control and power issues.
For some in abuse period it is strictly physical and I am assuming they aren't capable of finding a prostitute.
