I have listened to 2 lectures and feel very different. She makes real sense to me-- no psych drugs, although I do not JUDGE those who take medication--but she really resonates with me. I don't judge anyone. I have been through too much lol

I can't see praying as a way to overcome depression. I just can't. The way I overcame my depression is through extreme self-evaluation, deep internal reorganization, and being true to myself without letting external influences alter my perception of who I truly was. I cannot have faith that something will save me when I am so determined to save myself, that is what I see.

You know how they say Be the change you wish to see in the world?

If you can possibly do that from the inside, that can help. It's sort of like the difference between projecting and creating a vacuum. When you are needy it seems to work in the opposite direction.

Hard to make it understandable.

Of course asking Spirit in will help.

If prayer eases depression for some - brilliant! I know many do gain comfort and inspiration from their spiritual paths.

I work daily with people with mental health issues (including depression) and while many are religious or spiritual, it often isn't enough to lift depression. They still need to make tangible changes in their thinking or behaviour to achieve lasting change.

A lot of the time depression is connected to thoughts, unresolved trauma, attachment difficulties, life choices and environment. These things usually require targeted therapy for lasting change.

But yes, I think everyone can benefit from having a relationship with something bigger than themselves, whether that be a god, a cause, a project, etc.

That doesn't make it a fact for everyone else.

If it helps you, great. But it's not enough for many people to overcome (or more likely, manage) depression.

I really wish it helped. It doesn't help me. I have no more trust or faith in a higher power. If I pray at all, I pray to my mother.

I miss the days when I thought there was something out there protecting us. I miss the days when I could just relax, sure that my family was going to be okay, that I was going to be okay. It's been a real **** show, and whilst I'm grateful for a few things now, I'm terrified of losing those.

This lady has changed my life. I have hope to truly change the old messages of shame, guilt and lack of worth. If you are sexually abused, you blame yourself. It doesn't matter how many people tell you that it was not your fault. Inside, you have a lot of guilt. You have a lot of self hatred and a lot of shame. This lady shows how to rewire your brain so that you truly can transform. It is from the Bible, so some people may not relate to that but for me, it was a true gift from God.

In my psychology class , we studied what helped people with depression , especially the elderly (aging) etc. The more successful are the ones who keep communication and social contact as well as an optomisic outlook. A lot of other books that I have read the main key to overcoming depression and pessimism was hope.

Kinda funny, I was reading into the chart of this guy the other day but it spoke of him having to deal with Pandora's Box. The story goes she opened the box and out pops chaos, disease and all the earthly pains, famines, etc. She tried to close the box but was unable to , she tried to put everything back into the box but she was unable to. In the end there was only one thing left in the bottom of the box to help her and the people of the world she had unleasehed everything upon , Hope.

So what I am getting at is that for some (including myself) Prayer (religion) is very real in aiding recovery for illness of the physical and mental because of the hope that it brings, also just like meditation it conducts itself in ways in the brain where it is in a hightened state of self, allowing the body to transcend in ways to heal itself.

As for non believers of prayer and more so about self resolution and healing ones own self, this also is another way to heal depression and one's self. You are doing basically the same thing just without the presence of faith in a higher power but going within the body to find resolution diet, exercise, who , what , when and where the issue came from. Addressing how to resolve the issue in the mind though subconscious means . (Freud)

As I read in one thread , you do miss your mom and knowing her healing power such as (faith in a higher power) I would suggest in finding hope of some kind to allow the mind to go into it's own inner source for advanced healing.

Both thing heal in their on ways. Hope this helps

Teasel, I have similar feelings. I can't blindly believe in anything after certain experiences I've had. It would be foolish for me to do so. I would rather place my faith in certain people who have proven their loyalty to me and work on maintaining and building those relationships than attempt to cultivate a religious connection that I am not interested in anyway.

More than anything, though, I know myself and the nature of my depression. At its worst, I need medication and intervention from psychiatric specialist in order for it to not turn deadly. And I'm glad I know that about myself. I'm glad I know my limits and I encourage anyone with severe depression to know their limits when it comes to MI.

I believe a Faith in a higher power gives a strength to face depression and aids in the ability to an optimistic self heal.
