Does anyone know how I can heal a sinus infection without antibiotics? I've had one for a month now and it's not even close to going away. I've tried Olbas Oil, Flonase, Ecchinacea with Golden Seal, saline nasal drops, heat packs, and everything else I can think of. Nothing is touching it. My right sinus in my cheek is packed with infection and it has moved up to the sinuses in my upper nose and the right sinus above my eye. It's so bad now that you can smell the infection. I'm about to give up and take the antibiotics, but really don't want to put them in my body. Any ideas out there? Thanks!

I get sinus infections/sinus headaches a lot. I went to an ENT and we found that I have a slightly deviated septum, which I guess if fairly common and it seems to not help the sinuses in terms of blockage. A good thing to do is to drink a lot of water, which clears out your sinuses. I took antibiotics once and it did absolutely nothing. And I'm one of those people who has NO problem going to the doctor and taking what's prescribed. I often use over-the-counter stuff like Advil Cold & Sinus. It works for my headaches. There's also a recipe to mix purified water and salt and flush it into your nose (sounds strange, but I've done it), to help clear it out.

Alternatively, I did read somewhere that you can take Oleuropein (Olive Leaf Extract), although the one time I took it, my nose hurt a little. Could have been a coincidence since I already had a sinus headache. You might want to read up on it.

I hope you feel better Auriel! I definitely understand sinus problems.

Also, I don;t know if you're the same way, but I often get sinus headaches (baaad ones!) before it rains. I guess it has to do with the moisture in the air. For those incredibly awful ones where your face (or part of your face) is pounding, run the shower HOT and sit in the steam, after taking something (for me it's the over-the-counter stuff). Air pressure is definitely a factor.

Er...sorry for all the replies, but I just re-read your post and realized you said it's so bad you can almost smell the infection...(well, of course, it's in your nose, silly! kidding)

Seriously, at that point, you might want to see an Otolaryngologist (ENT) and they may discuss draining your sinuses. It sounds weird, but I know peopole who have had it done-it's a quick, non-surgical procedure where they drain any pus or mucous filled things inside your sinuses (you see, sinuses are pockets of air, and these things form from bacteria, I think). From what I've heard, there is minimal discomfort and these people felt SO much better afterwards.

Ok, I'll stop bombarding you with posts now. lol

my sister had a sinus infection a year ago, but wouldn't go to the doctor...this past Thanksgiving she finally broke down and went and she had to have surgery to scrape the sinus cavities...she had waited so long that he couldn't believe she didn't have an infection of the brain..seriously. And she has still not fully recovered from it, they think it did permanent damage to her sense of smell and taste. She hasn't tasted anything in a year.

Please take the medicine. Don't suffer like my sister has...

Thanks for all the information. I'll call my doctor tomorrow. Fortunately, he's like me with his way of thinking. He doesn't prescribe antibiotics at the drop of a hat and thinks the world is overmedicated with antibiotics.

Oxychick, I went to an ENT a long time ago. I can't remember when, but it was before Kassiana was ever thought of and she's six now. Anyway, he was a total moron and wanted to enlarge my sinus cavities! He told me mine were too small and told me how it would damage the appearance of my face and he'd have to completely reconstruct my face, and I would no longer be attractive. I felt like he'd do anything to make extra money. I like my face as it is and opted for his other recommendation. He put me on a three week supply of a strong antibiotic and it worked.

You know, one of my maternal uncles always had sinus problems. He had his sinuses drained several times. He ended up with cysts in his sinuses that turned malignant. The cancer spread to his brain and he died two years ago. I don't know if the cancer developed as a result to his sinus problems or now.

Oh my...I'm sorry to hear about your uncle. Maybe his infections were a result of the cysts? It stinks that we can't seem to find the right answers...

I had a good experience with my ENT. She's absolutely great, had me go for a scan of my sinuses and told me that I also have small sinus cavities (could it be an Aquarian thing? Is there such a study?), and that in the extreme scenario, she could very easily fix my deviated septum through surgery and it would not at all alter my appearance.

Is Kassiana your daughter?

Yea sinus headaches can be really awful! I get them sometimes too- like when the weather changes drastically in a short amount of time- boom, just pounding awful headache, I can't think, talk, see light, do anything really. And drinking alcohol makes it worse!

I find the only thing that helps is something with pseudoephedrine. And traditional Medicinals makes a tea called Cold Care PM and that helps clear the head, and sweat out icky stuff. ANd it's all herbs and stuff so I hope you try it.

Lots of support because I know it hurts!

Thanks Fajita.

Well, I didn't call the doctor today, but I'm going to have to tomorrow if I'm not any better. My face is now swollen around my eye and across my cheek. The pressure is unbearable. I mean, I actually took a pain reliever and I don't use them. Geez, great birthday this is going to be.

Oxychick, small sinuses may be an Aquarian/Leo thing, but sinuses are ruled by Aries. My Uncle was a Leo. You know, it's weird that I have such horrible sinus problems when my Mars is so well placed. But it is in Libra, which opposes Aries. My intuition tells me there's something more to it though.

Yes, Kassiana is my daughter. Thank you for the compliment, Bernadette.

Auriel, I suffer horribly with sinus too. Hmmm could be an Aqua thing. Anyhow, like Fajita, weather changes affect me & I have many allergies mostly to animal dander/dust ( & I have numerous animals). I use pseudoephedrine too and Vicks smeared under my nose helps. Not good for my love life ,but the drainage feels so good I can forgo the cuddling
Wishing you good health!! juniperb

Funny you should say that Auriel! In addition to being an Aquarius (w/ Mars & Merc. there too), I have a Leo moon. Nothing in Aries though.

Call the doctor. Swelling is bad.

I hope you feel better!!

Good!

I don't think to use them when necessary is bad..it's simply overuse that is negative, and I know she wasn't in danger for that anyhow!
