I smoked more than a packet a day, but finally gave up almost six years ago. That was my third try quitting - so my first advice would be that even if you don't succeed first time, learn from your mistakes and try again later. When I finally quit I went cold turkey, and didn't take any supplements. But I got a knitting with a lot of pattern, and I was sucking on a piece of plastic and cleaning my teeth with toothpicks a lot because I was so used to have something in the mouth. Later I heard someone advicing using a Bic pen, removing the inkthing, and suck on it because it gives perfect cigarette resistance...Something you can fickle with is good, I presume your boyfriend doesn't knit or do cross stitch, but find something else.
I found some situations hard: Just after dinner, for instance. So I'd get up immediatly and start cleaning the table. I missed the cigarette with my morning coffee, so I turned to drink tea.
My best motivating factor was money. I started to put aside the money for a packet of cigarettes every day, and soon had a nice amount that I could spend on something extra. I still do this, and plan to use my cigarette money this year to take the family on holidays. My dishwasher, the kids bikes, my printer are all "cigarette money" stuff - and often I just grab the money and go out and treat myself to new clothes, some make up or other nice stuff. My dad, who smoked for forty years, started buying himself a new CD every second day - the same expense as the cigarettes.
Good luck to your boyfriend! It isn't that hard once he's made up his mind.

The patch REALLY worked for me. It really took the "edge" off.

I DONT recommend the gum. It tastes NASTY. And, it burns your mouth and throat. But, mostly it tastes NASTY.

(I have unfortunately, gone back to smoking. But, I intend to re-quit again this spring or when the war is over, whichever comes last ).

Did I mention the gum tastes Nasty?

I know a few severely addicted smokers who tried a patch, and it really helped them where nothing else did... but basically it made them dopey-happy enough to get past the cravings and fidgeting stage.

Your beau could drink more calming teas, like chamomile, play more calming music, try massage (ooh... a mutually beneficial thing!!) and practice more meditation, or Tai Ch'i, and these might soothe, but behavioural and habit changes are the core, in my observation.

A smoker friend once asked me in consternation, "but what do you do when you're waiting for a bus!?" There are many smoking behaviours related to killing time, or nerves, or just occupying oneself with doing something with one's hands, and that a smoker must replace, or modify... it must be tough, and it does take time.

The common wisdom about addictions is, "drop a habit-- pick up a habit." Doing weights helps a lot-- also generates those endorphins -- or some new hobby where he uses his hands a lot.

Like er, massage... hehehehe...

Thanx Lunargirl It is so shocking. He jumps out of bed in the morning, breathes in the fresh air and declares how great he feels !! It is ssooo sickening!! I thought he would at least suffer a little bit I am happy for him though but he is honestly doing really well cold turkey!! Unbelievable!

He was just named captain of his footy team so I guess he is also trying to set a good example. He is also helping out with the Junior footballers and it is important to him to be a role model to the kids
