I just found that my 8 month old baby boy might have a peanut allergy. He had an allergy test done on quite a few things, and he had a reaction to the peanut allergen. It wasn't a full-on reaction so it was inconclusive. But, becasue he is still a baby I have to bring him back in 6 months time to get retested. Until then, the paediatric allergist wants me to treat it as if my son does have a allergy to peanuts to be on the safe side.

So, that means no peanut products or even products with traces of peanuts in them.

Does anyone else here have peanut allergies in their families? There are 2 blood relatives on my husband's side who have life-threatening allergies to peanuts. So, I am feeling quite concerned. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks guys!!

Love and Peace,
Sunmeadow Glades.

I don't have any personal experience, but I popped over to www.about.com and they have several articles and links that are related.
On the home page just search for "peanut allergy."

Hello, Sun!

Peanuts are one of the 'big eight' allergens identified by the USFDA. There are companies that put in very stringent measures to ensure that if there are products including any of these eight, that sanitation and segregating procedures are put in place to avoid cross contamination. I don't know if it's a requirement for all companies to do this, but I know a lot of the biggies do. Maybe you should check where you buy your stuff from.

I'm not sure if this helps at all, but I thoght I might as well share the little I know. Have you done a search? I'm sure you'd find something.

Good luck, and I'll let you know if I find out more.

My younger sister had allergies to cats, eggs, and nuts as a child - but not as severe as some of the peanut-only allergic reactions we hear about. I know a fellow who was at a local bar/restaurant, and the barmaid kissed the back of his neck as she swept by (she's a big kidder with a big heart!). When she came back he asked if she had been eating peanut butter; she had; and he showed her a big welt that had come up on the back of his neck. Now that's sensitive!

The good news is that my sister grew entirely out of the allergy to eggs, although they will never be a favourite food; has a less severe reaction to cats; and later worked with an allergist to determine that she can eat sunflower seeds and peanuts, but not almonds and a couple other nuts. And I have read that in a way it's better to have an allergy as a kid than to develop it as an adult, as they may change, lessen or disappear.

Maybe you can find a local small bakery that specializes in a nut-free production environment, or you can try making your own bread, until you're sure about the allergy. Bread machines are always turning up at garage sales. And when you read food labels, which sometimes leave a lot to be desired regarding the real ingredients, "if in doubt, leave it out".

Thank goodness you found out so early about this potential allergy! He's lucky to have such an astute mom and dad!
