Here's an article out of Taste For Life Mag. from August 2003:

"In The Pink"

Now consumers have yet another reason to ask whether the fish the're eating is wild caught or farmed: artificial coloring. In April a class-action law suit accused several supermarket chains of violating FDA's regulations by failing to inform customers that farmed salmon CONTAIN PETROCHEMICAL DYES. "There's no way I would have spent my money buying salmon if I'd known it wasn't reallly the red or orange color... it looks in the store," says one consumer in Seattle, WA where the lawsuits were filed.

Although this legal action doesn't address whether the artificial coloring is harmful (only the fact that it wasn't labeled correctly), evidence suggests that the dyes used may be damaging to long term health. Responding to concerns about adverse health effects, the European Union is currently reducing the allowable levels of canthaxanthin (one dye mentioned in the US lawsuit) from 80 PPM (an amount the FDA concludes would not damage the retina of the eye) to 25 PPM. Canada's permissable level is only 30 PPM.

Another dubious dye used to color salmon is synthetic astaxanthin. Containing only 1/3 the antioxidants of natural astaxanthin extract (the version standardized in natural supplements), the sythetic product "is comparable to feeding an animal trans fats," says Taste For Life contributing editor Marcia Zimmerman, MEd, CN.

"The differnce between the synthetic and the natural antioxidant is like night and day," she adds. As opposed to farmed fish, wild salmon and shellfish get their color from antural astaxanthin in krill. ~END~

Pretty freaky we don't know what we're eating!

Foe real, I wonder if the govn't put any labeling like that on our foods we consume if ne1 would even buy the crap. Genetically modified foods really is a scourge. Tell me I'm eating Corn Flakes from the fields of overproduction USA that are wholesome.

Why don't we grow foods locally instead of monoculturing and spending bookoo bucks on shipping from CA to P, or wherever? It's bizarre how that's even cost effective.

ANA does Canada have any labeling for GM foods, like Britain does or at least makes a stink about?

buggin .... I find this subject interesting and yet I relate. I know this is an old post, but figured I'd add my 2 cents. I have always been a dis-believer in farmed fish. My best friend is a commercial fisherman and has been for quite sometime. So I know the true fish from the fake. One point to point out IS THE COLOR. The fish whether king, red, pink or sivler will in doubtably be lighter in color. When I go to a restaraunt (i usually dont eat fish there but if I were to) I will first ask them if it is freash or farmed. The waitress then will usually have to go back and ask the cook. And usually it is farmed (even though we live in Alaska where there is tons and tons of fresh fish caught daily - we still serve farmed fish in allot of chain restaraunts) If it is farmed I will tell the waitress, "okay nevermind, it sounded very appetizing, but since it is farmed I dont want to do harm to my body by putting all these toxic chemicals into my system" another thing is I raise my voice slightly so poeple around me tend to hear it. A few times I have noticed that other tables will get into a discussion regarding "farmed fish" and the bad chioces the gov't will take with us - the guinea pigs to their evil little plot (whatever it may really be). My best friends boss, whom I've also know for years used to talk allot about all this and hes always voiced his opinion to me on this subject as well as the gov't. Which my best friends dad also voiced. But I guess what I am trying to say is dont be afraid to ask and speak your mind to these people. It may not be the waitresses fault, but its makes u heard and if anything its the restaraunts fault for allowing sucj a toxic chemical plate to be served in our restaraunts..... every ones in it for the money. Why not spend less and cath it yourself!
On the other hand there are alot of privatly owned local restaraunts here in Anchorage and all over the state that do serve fresh caught fish and seafood. My favorite is King Crab right off the crab boat, still alive and screaming! Enjoy your next fish/seafood plate and dont forget to ask!

Farmed salmon is grey. They think people would not find that color very attractive. Would have be nice to be give the person eating it a choice don't you think?

We should also examine the cause of eye disorders that are going through the roof right now.
