I am always so surprised when I see people using that stuff instead of sugar. Depending on how well I know them, sometimes I say, "you would rather eat chemicals than sugar?" (i.e., for instance, sweetener in their coffee).

Why don't people use honey or something natural like that?

Thanks Randall.

I've been preaching that for years to friends, often to no avail. But I'll be sending that link to everyone I know and love.

Oh...and Stevia is also a wonderful natural sweetener.

yes aspartame and sacharin are both very bad for you. There are newer alternatives though that are much safer.
Sucralose AKA Splenda is much safer, it is made from regular sugar, but it is basigally prcess in such a way that is convert into something your body cannot absorb like fiber and thus it adds flavor, without the carbs. only problem is that it does not brown the same so it will make cooking with it more difficult. the other alternative is still really new but it is a form of tagatose, same results, except it tastes exactly like suger, cooks like sugar, and even looks like sugar, but your body cannot absorb it, and so it acts like fiber again. Tagatose looks like the best alternative, but it is still not readily available last I checked, so for now, I would stick to splenda

Sorry to be a pain here, grayheart, but I think ALL artificial sweeteners are hazardous, including sucralose. We had a long thread about them here, if I can find it, I'll revive it.

In the meantime...

interesting, I was not aware of that information on sucralose. In that case I would probably stick with tagatose as it is a naturally occuring product, although that is not really readily available as it is still new. I would still watch it though as it may have negative side effects as well, but it is still being tested. We will just have to wait and see though. Of course, I would point out that regular sugar is not exactly good for you either. And the problems caused by sucralose are a little less frgihtening than aspartame and sacharin. here is what I could find really quick on tagatose, I read about it a while back in wired magazine, but this may help a little: http://www.tagatose.com/

tagatose also appears to be beneficial fertility: http://www.pharmcast.com/Patents/Yr2001/May2001/050101/6225452_Fertility050101.htm

More links on Tagatose: http://www.mendosa.com/tagatose.htm

Granted, it is too new for any extended studies, but preliminary information seems good

I'll stick with honey, and Stevia, which is just a nice, innocent little plant.

I love to sprinkle Stevia and cinnamon onto toasted almonds...that takes care of my candy cravings!
