Hi there

I have been suffering from dandruff for a loooooonnnnnnggggg time and I have tried everything to cure myself from it,from using anti-dandruff shampoo to shaving all my hair off and everything in between BUT to no avail-nothing seems to work.
It is irritating the hell out of me and not to mention down right embarrasiing at times.
Is there a NATURAL way to cure myself from dandruff?Like eating certain fruits and veggies, taking certain vitamins or remedies.Anything of that sort will be appreciated.
Thank you
Really desperate.

Dandruff is natural, so the idea is to reduce the amount, and you can do that by taking selenium.

Place organic apple cider vinegar in a bowl, dip into this cotton balls, then swab scalp in sections with vinegar, let dry.
We have a lovely scottish lady who swears by this.
My son suffers from this too and the anti dandruff is no longer working and I was just reminded of this, can you remind me on Sunday as thats when he will be home :-)

It's a mineral. You can get it almost anywhere (even grocery stores). Very anti-cancer and anti-heart disease.

Sorry.. In all seriousness, The things I know to help are "salicylic acid" which will exfolliate and clarify.....(You can get it in Neutrogena formulations, 2% and 3%)
Tea tree oil shampoo.. alternatively, Tea tree oil added to your favorite shampoo.
Selenium IN shampoo works as well, vewry popular ingedient in the anti-dandruff shampoo section, and zinc pirethione (sp)
Keep your hair and scalp well moisturized.. use conditioner, even if you have little hair. (you don't need a lot)
If you have a raw, itchy scalp, coal tar formulas, even with menthol added seem to soothe. But they smell ewww.... so I'd just use it on your scalp, massage it in, let it sit, rinse, and follow with a nicely scented one.
Follow the rule.. Lather, Rinse, Repeat. Alot of formulas need the repeat part.. the friction will lift certain impuities from the scalp and hair shaft, and when you do it again, the loosened skin has a chance to 'desquamate'... or shed. Just make sure it isn't too clarifying a formula, or you could strip too much needed moisture from the hair.

See? I can be serious!!!

Thank you PixelPixie.

I am tired of using anti-dandruff shampoo as they dont seem to work well with me,even though i follow the instructions religiously.
When I use them, the dandruff comes back after a week or so after it disappears. It gets really frustrating. That is why I am going to try taking Selenium to see if it works.
HOWEVER,Pixelpixie, I will try to keep my hair well moisterised by using conditioner(even though my hair is short).
LUCKILY for me I dont have a raw, ichy scalp-that would drive me CRAZY if I did.

hi moondreamer ~

here are some herbal remedies you might like to try:

dandruff treatment number 1.

add 4 tablespoons of dried nettle to 1 pint of boiling water. steep overnight. strain and add 1 cup of apple cider vinegar. massage into the scalp. can also be used as a face rinse to get rid of oily skin.

dandruff treatment number 2:

in a separate container, mix 1 cup of burdock, 1 cup peach tree leaves, 1 cup chamomile, 1/2 cup sage leaves. pour 2 quarts of cider vinegar into gallon jar. add the herb mixture to the cider vinegar. let stand 2 weeks. strain and apply morning and evening. do not rinse off. let dry on hair. wait until the next day to rinse it out. there is no need to use any soap or shampoo to rinse out the treatment. using plain water will wash this treatment along with the dirt from your hair. This works quickly on dandruff.

to control dandruff:

this is a great rinse and helps to control dandruff too. pour 1 pint of boiling water over 1/2 cup of chopped parsley. let stand 30 minutes. massage into scalp and allow to stay on 15 minutes. use as a final rinse.

i've heard these treatments are failsafe. they are from 'Jude's Herbal Home Remedies'.

happy hair health to you!

love, talaith

Just reading about tea tree oil, thought I'd pass on that you can use that for any hair/scalp concerns.... makes the hair shiny and very clean. Normalizes scalp conditions.. Use a ready made formula, as those tend to be pH balanced, and environmentally friendly, plus done up for you already, with added amino acids/proteins and stuff, so you get the best. Add a few drops of pure tea tree oil to your palm, with the shampoo as well.

Herbal remedies are best.

Boil a big pot of Chamomile Tea. Let cool, strain. Pour this over your head after shampoo and conditioning. Do this once a week.

Another way is to mix yogurt and Chamomile tea together and let this stand on your head once a week for five minutes. I do not like this method very much though because yogurt does tend to clog up the drains.

Herbal remedies will nourish the skin without oil.

Follow this carefully and you'll be set free.
I PROMISE it will happen really quickly.

Also very good for Acne and Psoriasis. I have seen both clear very rapidly using the following many times. Also great for those of us with no problems who want to stay wrinkle free and young.

Zinc 30mg - helps skin regenerate in a healthy manner. Protein depends on zinc and all skin is primarily protein. Do not exceed 100mg. I normally give people 30mg/50mg a day.

Selenium - 200mg daily. An important antioxidant to aid controlling dry scalp and skin.

Vitamin B - get a good high potency complete complex B. Take one daily - with meals is best for proper absorption. Expect urine to turn limey.

Vitamin A - 10,000 IU - daily it's a must for keeping skin healthy and again helps to prevent it drying. DO NOT EXCEED.

Essential fatty acids in your diet are a MUST. Butter, olive oil, cod liver oil or primrose if you do not eat fish. Daily.

Vitamin E. - I take one capsule daily, and then I open another with a lancet and mix it in a little bit of moisturizing cream and put it on my face at night. DO NOT GET IT IN YOUR EYES.

At least 9 large glasses of clean water daily
Juice, tea, soda, or anything not pure water, is not the same.

This will keep all skin clear, young and blemish free. Remember it will take at least one or two months for those with bad acne or dermatitis to clear. I have been on all of this for the last 18 years. I used to have loads of skin problems and spent fortunes on stuff that never worked. Not to mention dermatologists around the world. Plus I worked with a chemist who made cosmetics for the big guys.

This was an amazing regimen for me. I get asked all the time what make up I'm wearing? I never wear anything at all. No foundation, or powder, or anything. I just wear lipstick and mascara.

It works for most skin conditions. If the skin gets correct nutrition then it balances and heals on it's own. Do use a shampoo for DRY hair to enable the flaky skin to come away easily. Let me know how you get on.

I agree with pixelpixie...go to the body shop and buy tee tree oil shampoo. I was having a problem with dandruff too...I used the tee tree oil shampoo AND i decreased the tempurature of the water in the shower since hotter water exacerbates the problem.

It worked like a charm...tee tree oil is also good for other skin conditions...I have mild excema which gets worse in the winter time...I use a tea tree oil body wash and it helps tremendously.

Good luck.

Thanks for the recommendations, Gia!

I have developed adult acne over the last few years and NOTHING has worked. I'm going to give this a try...

I wonder if it will help with other skin conditions? I have a rare 'incurable' skin disease called Granuloma Annulare. I've tried every remedy in the book, doctor prescribed and natural...the only thing that has helped has been a supplement I get at the natural food store called Herpanacine, along with applying FES's Self Heal Flower Essence cream directly on my spots.

I'm going to pick up the vitamins you recommend on my trip home and start right away!

Thanks.

Yes. I do know what Granuloma Annulare is. It is not all that rare. It's most common with children although they tend to grow out of it.

How long have you had this?

Are you taking any medications I should know about. Anything at all?

Do you drink or consume 'diet' products such as Coke, Sprite, anything with Splenda, Nutra Sweet, or any other artificial sweetner?

Do you use a tea or coffee dairy subsitute?

Do you like the sun?

Any other allergies?

Thyroid problems at all?

What kind of diet?

Good general health?

Please answer the above so I can understand if there are any other underlying causes.

PLEASE NOTE:

I AM NOT A DOCTOR. I just happen to have some knowledge in nutritional healing. I'll share what I know gladly. I like to help. Please do try and remember though I'm not the all knowing oracle here. And I'm NOT A DOCTOR.

Hi Gia-

I first got GA at age 19, when I started taking birth control pills. I went off the pills, and the GA stayed. I'm now 27 and have it all over my body. It has faded some over the years, but new spots are always cropping up. I just tried birth control again for the first time in 8 years, and it flamed up. I swear there is a horomonal connection.

Are you taking any medications I should know about. Anything at all?

No medications. I take oregano pills, st. john's wort, herpanacine, and cranactin.

Do you drink or consume 'diet' products such as Coke, Sprite, anything with Splenda, Nutra Sweet, or any other artificial sweetner?

I've never used sugar substitutes and I never drink diet drinks. I only drink tea or water.

Do you use a tea or coffee dairy subsitute?

I can't consume caffeine. So, no coffee for me. I do like natural teas from time to time.

Do you like the sun?

Nope. Never been a sun worshipper. I have very fair skin. I'm blonde, so I have to be careful of the sun.

Any other allergies?

I'm allergic to sulpha drugs.

Thyroid problems at all?

There are chronic thyroid problems on both side of my family. My mom had to have hers removed, so did her dad. My grandmother on my dad's side has skin problems from a thyroid problem. My thryroid has been checked twice...so far- no irregularities. I have also been checked for diabetes. No problem there either.

What kind of diet?
Mostly vegetarian. Some chicken and fish. I have struggled with anorexia all of my life...so food is an issue.

Good general health?

Yes.

Thanks for your input Gia!

Yes, I already knew you had a problem with food. I also picked up on possible endocrine problems Thyroid. Please take the advice and dosages prescribed on the above post. I also want you to take vitamin D. Your skin should respond within a month or two.

Please try harder with food as your body does not absorb enough of what you need to keep you healthy. Sulphur is a common allergen for people who have low immune function. Try to space your meals and eat small portions several times a day. I know you find it hard to eat huge portions.

I want you to buy tincture of iodine from any pharmacy. Put a quarter size drop on your thigh before you go to bed. Let it dry properly before getting in bed - otherwise it will stain your sheets quite badly. It should be very orange in colour when you first put it on. Check the time. Tell me how many hours it takes to completely absorb.

Look forward to the results.

Dandruff is commonly mistaken for a seborrheic condition that occurs from excess oil on the area (in this case it could be the scalp). It appears flakey and is quite itchy. A good way to tell the difference is if there is any redness along with the patches of flakey skin. Sometimes sores. If this is the case, then conditioner should be used moderately, if at all.

The condition is the same thing we call "cradle cap" in infants. As most Mamas know, gentle and frequent shampooing will show the best results.

My husband and daughter both have this condition. They've both been to the doctor for it. There really is no cure for it, but it can be controlled. Non-prescription shampoos containing tar, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, and/or salicylic acid may be helpful, or a prescription shampoo, cream gel, or foam may be given to you by a doctor.

I suggest you see a dermatologist to determine exactly what your condition is.
