I am a vegetarian here in America and was wondering is vegetarianism/veganism as prominent in other countries as it is here? And is it harder to be a vegetarian in certain places, or is it frowned upon? Just curious because I'd like to travel someday and wondered what everybody's take on it is. I'd appreciate it if anybody from a foreign country (not America) could respond, vegetarian or omnivore.IP: Logged |

I live in San Rafael, Calif., and almost everyone I know cannot understand why I am vegetarian. I get stupide comments all the time and I'm so sick of it. Luckily, there are more choices of vegetarian foods on menus. IP: Logged |

Yea, you would think in California, that people would be more accepting of a vegetarian diet, but there are still the skeptics. Well, I guess they are prevelent anywhere you go, but much more likely in a state like, say Texas (where I am originally from.)IP: Logged |

Being a veggie in India is just wonderful - you get the most gorgeous food here! very balanced as well. I travelled to Australia last month and had quite a hard time in some parts. Sydney's fine..but Adelaide was more hard for veggie food. Although there was a Vietnamese restaurant where I had a really good meal.In the UK I lived on side orders without steak - very filling! No problems there. I think it's getting better though, I know I used to starve in Singapore about 7 years ago, but now they have a lot of veggie options, although most of it is still meat. I've never been in a restaurant (Including seafood restaurants where I couldn't order at least a salad and a side dish, or maybe pizza if you're not vegan (though often I've ordered yummy no-cheese pizzas loaded with veggies).Though here's a tip, depending on your own personal boundaries: some restaurants cook the french fries, and other fried veggies, in the same oil as the fish.In Ireland, every restaurant I visited had a vegetarian choice, like delicious veggie pies. Mmmmm. ------------------ The less I seek my source for some definitive, the closer I am to fine. -Indigo Girls IP: Logged |

Here in Melbourne, Aus. I find it wonderful for vegans. We have a lot of hippies here. The supermarkets have a lot of fresh produces and a great variety of non-animal foods. Health food stores are opening up all over the place. In the city, and on the fringes there are many restaurants that cater to the veggos. I love going to "Soul Mamas" its all you can eat! I haven't really been anywhere else so I can only talk for Melbourne.IP: Logged |
