I have thought about been a vegetarian for some time now, but I dont know if I am ready to commit myself to it yet. The reason why I want to become one is simply for health reasons. I have taken an honest look at it and there are problems arising from it. First of all, I have type 1 diabetes! If I change my diet dramatically it will affect my diabetes.no doubt about it. Second, I can give up meat but my major weakness is CHICKEN. I totally enjoy the taste of it-whether fried, roasted or whatever.(even typing this out is making me hungry for a chicken burger, mmm). Is there a type of "vegetarianism'i can be that includes chicken? See I am in a dilemma that is making me not knowing what I should do.What do you guys suggest?

Speaking as a vegetarian, I would suggest that you eat the way you want to eat. If you have no 'moral' objections to eating chicken, then eat it. If you are feeling strongly that your body would be healthier with no red meat, then you should heed your inner voice. I don't believe in hard and fast rules, Yang. Vegetarianism is obviously not for everyone...so go at a pace that works for you. YOu may or may not decide to give up chicken at some point in life...but to do so now would be way to drastic for you. Linda had devised a verrrrry slow plan for becoming vegetarian...too slow for me. But again, do what works for you. And let us know how you feel if you start eating w/o red meat. IP: Logged |

I agree too. I still eat fish on occasions because my body tells me so, as trillian said "then you should heed your inner voice" And Don't put yourself in a 'type' Be yourself!...and do what you feel is necessary and take it slow, don't set yourself rules ect.. go strictly at your own pace.

Yup, yup! I agree with all the others. I used to be a vegetarian from age 12-19, but since I am anemic, my hair started falling out as I wasn't very loyal at taking vitamins. So my doctor suggested eating fish or taking iron pills. Eventually I ended up going on a turkey a week plan. I don't eat any red meat at all, and have turkey either in a sandwich, or as a dinner once a week. I just listen to my body, when I'm feeling a bit worn out or lethargic, I eat turkey. I also eat more spinach, peanuts and beans. Seems to have really made a difference, as I'm healthy and happy not having to take pills.... I'm not nearly static enough to remember....Do what you feel, baby! Ghani IP: Logged |

Guess i don't fit into a category either. Tho i listen to my body and i have cut out all red meat. Much to difficult to digest for me at least.I do eat a little chicken (tho i sorta needa wanna cut that out too) and lotsa fish (wow, i'm eating my own brethren). No pork either. I do steam a lot of vegetables and make some nice drinks with the juicer. IP: Logged |

Another veggie here I guess we all have the same answer - listen to your body. If it's telling you it doesn't need red meat but still wants chicken, then by all means eat chicken. I'm guessing that in a few years your body might just change its mind and decide that chicken isn't all it's cracked up to be. Sometimes people need to go (he he) cold turkey - sunchild did I believe - and sometimes they need to ween themselves off gradually. Having diabetes, I would imagine a slow tranformation rather than a drastic change might just suit you better. Whatever works for you, Yang. Does your "dilemma" stem from trying to conform to the rigorous standards of the vegetarian community? If so, screw em'! Run your own course Brother!

Thank you all for your advice. When I decide to be one, I will take a slow appoach to it. Some of you mention fish.I am not a huge fan of fish therefore I will not be missing it.Thank you once again.

Yup I went cold turkey because from what I researched I didnt feel too good about eating meat at all- even dairy. My Nana loves to cook for me once a week and sometimes she puts a little fish in the dish or uses alot of butter...she's very old and tries so hard to make a beautiful meal, so I respect that and I eat it- and its always yummy but I never want to refuse it because I wont eat fish...my body felt ok about it. I take it a day at a time.Your welcome Yang...any time ------------------ "Almost always it is the fear of being ourselves that brings us to the mirror." -Antonio Porchia IP: Logged |

Well, I've been a vegetarian for 1 or 2 years. It's a really healthy way of life, if you do it right. Since my voyage into vegetarianism, I have been exposed to foods that I never would have tried. I've lost weight, too. The important thing is to eat a wide variety of foods. I used to really love chicken as well, so it was hard to make the transition. But there are meat alternatives, "mock meat" is you will. Some people hate it, but there are some actual good products out there. Boca and Morningstar Farms make "chicken" patties and nuggets. I rather enjoy them, but it varies from person to person. Try some different stuff out for yourself. I understand your concern with your diabetes. I would definitely check with your doctor, and see what changes can be safely made to your diet. Also, stop by the library, you can find some really good resouces on the benefits of a vegetarian diet, as well as some good cookbooks. Above all else, you have to do what's right for YOU. Nobody else can tell you how to live your life. I decided to become a vegetarian for moral, health, and environmental reasons. I think it is one of the best decisions I have made, but everybody is different, and you must find your own path. I wish you the best of luck Love, Stacey IP: Logged |
