So, I was trying out doing some exercise the day before yesterday, and I found six pound weights in my closet. I sat down, and did fifty lifts for each arm. You know, I thought you were supposed to do it until you felt a burn or whatever, and I didn't feel it until I got to about forty. The next day I'm fine. But come today and I can't straighten my arms out, and whenever I put them in more than probably a 100 degree angle it hurts. The arms are pretty sore. I'm not too worried, but I just wanted to ask just to make sure- this isn't going to cause anything permanent, right?IP: Logged |

I think the best rule is if it still hurts in a few days or if the pain gets worse, see a doctor. Otherwise, take some tylenol or something along that line. Maybe get a massage. If your muscles feel warm, apply cold compress, otherwise use heat (do not do this if your pain is worsening or your pain is at specific location - you should do this only if it is a generalized pain to relax the muscles.) A good soak in the tub can help also. I think you learned the hard way that exercise should be done in moderation and slowly built up.You should also warm up your muscles walking or working out on a treadmill or something before working with weights. Long ago, I decided to do leg stretched before warming up my muscles and pulled a tendon in my foot. Unfortunately there was nothing my doctor could have done for me and now on and off for the past ten years it flairs up. IP: Logged |

Wow Kat, that's awful, about your foot. I'll definitly be more careful. My arms are fine now, but I think I'll stay away from those weights for awhile. Thanks for the advice.IP: Logged |

Kat gave great advice. I'm a gym goer, and have been on and off for quite some time & I've learned alot of things the hard way too. 50 reps is a bit excessive, I would expect to be in a lot of pain 2 days later. If your starting out with free weights make sure you only begin with 3 sets of 10 reps. Seriously, your muscles need to get used to it, even if you don't feel the lactic acid burning, it's still doing something. Once you do this for a few weeks, then you can slowly increase the reps. And yes, never stretch cold muscles. And always stretch after working out.Free weights are great for improving strength and muscle tone. Three or four times a week is plenty. But you should include an exercise regime for you whole body while weight training. ------------------ "And dreams, don't ever forget, are the first step in manifesting wishes into reality"-- Linda Goodman's Star Signs IP: Logged |
