My grandmother was a Virgo; I know all about butting heads. I'm not mad at you Thirteen. We disagreed about something, but we both had the best of intentions. And it's important for all those opinions to be out there so people can consider them, do their own research, and make informed decisions. So it's all good, Thirteen. The first time I heard anything bad about artificial sweeteners was when I visited a natural healer maybe 15 years ago. He was an older man, lived in a trailer, but he was fascinating. He told me that aspartame could be devastating to the body. He also told me that originally, aspartame was made from natural ingredients, but the manufacturers found cheaper ways to make it with chemicals. There is no safe artificial sweetener. You're better off with sugar, though I'd still recommend organic, natural unbleached sugar. Another alternative is Stevia, which is made from a plant. Even Atkins recommends stevia! Interestingly, it can only be bought as a 'nutritional supplement,' rather than a sweetener. You see, the artificial sweetener people don't want the competition...you can find it in any GNC. Now, I recall a thread here at LL about a woman whose sister's health was devastated by aspartame. Six months after eliminating it from her diet, she was well...let me see if I can find the thread... Here it is: http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/001840.html There are some good links on it, too. I'll try to find some others for you later. Don't be fooled by Splenda/sucralose, either. http://www.mercola.com/2000/dec/3/sucralose_dangers.htm# Blessings to you, thirteen. I hope this helps. IP: Logged |

Whoops...you asked about Sweet N Low, which is saccharin. I think you'll still find some info on the Linda-land link I provided.BTW, I just noticed this on Dr. Mercola's site: quote: Considering that Splenda bears more chemical similarity to DDT than it does to sugar, are you willing to bet your health on this data? Remember that fat soluble substances, such as DDT, can remain in your fat for decades and devastate your health.
OK, on saccharin: I'm not sure it's been linked to depression, only that it's considered toxic to the body. quote: Two approved sugar substitutes, saccharin and aspartame, have been the subject of ongoing controversy that, in the case of saccharin, dates back more than 20 years. Questions still linger about whether saccharin may cause cancer in humans, and though the sweetener is still widely used, it carries a label that warns of its potential risks.
http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/1999/699_sugar.html Here's another interesting link: http://www.something-fishy.org/dangers/sugarfat.php I'll try to find more for you, and I'm sure others here will have some info for you too. IP: Logged |

thirteen, I just wanted to tell you that I've found no research that links saccharin to depression. There are other potential problems with it, but not depression. Now, as for the other artificial sweeteners, you know how I feel about them! And there are definitely links to depression and other debilitating health problems from aspartame, splenda, and the like. Hope you are well. IP: Logged |

Thank you for the update. This would be a good time for me to mention that studies are showing that calcium and Vit.D are showing in the testing that it can eliminate PMS altogether. I do take a calcium supplement so now I have added vitamin D. If this works that would be just great. It could eliminate using drugs for my pms.I know its much to quick to notice but my pms was better this month. It could be the drugs too though because they take a while to reach maximum effect. Thanks again for the update. Im going to use stevia and get rid of sweet-n-low altogether. IP: Logged | |
