we are experiencing a diabetes epidemic because of our lifestyle. We don't exercise much as we did in the past and we have so much food that its being left over. And i think America has the worst eating habits, all the junk food kids eat for lunch, and in most countries people walk more often and therefore exercise more than we do. and our portion sizes!!!

both my parents are diabetics...

Hmmm....

My mom is diabetic...she doesn't take care of herself, and this really upsets me and everyone in my family!

What foods are best to keep blood sugar level constant for longer periods. Foods high in fibre, rolled oats? Anything else?

I'm korean...so the stuff we eat at home are put together with rice and vegetables..and of course other carbohydrates like potatoes, etc. We try to mix some brown rice w/ white rice but my mom she can barely have any anyway because it brings her blood sugar up so high.

How about suggesting your mom acupuncture, or any natural ways to get her circulation going. It really helps. My mom has been doing for some time and it regulated her sugar levels and it helped supress her appetite.

Yes. Foods high in fiber but it's not always easy to eat these foods everyday. Make sure you guys are using the right oils at home too. Never use Crisco, or vegetable oils, but use canola or olive oil.
Homemade vegetable soups would be good and grapefruit.
She doesn't skip meals does she? Portion sizes are important for diabetics and to keep snacks (fruits, veggies, little bit of nuts) around her.

It's best though to add a bit of lean protein to her diet because it'll keep her full. Tofu is great. But red meat should be eaten only occasionally.

Try shopping at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's or any place that sells organic food. My mom tried some pizza they sell at Whole Foods, they make it right in front of you & she said she didn't feel tired or anything after eating it. Probably because they use olive oil.

DayDreamer,

a cup of coffee a day isn't bad. I've also heard that coffee is good for diabetes. but don't drink too much, because it takes away calcium. your mother takes her viatims everyday right?

hope she takes better care of herself.

best wishes

xoxo Esther

My mother is crazy, she still eats a lot of the white stuff!!! White rice, bread, sugar everyday! And it's not uncommon for her bloodsugar to be at about 14-15!!!! She's also on medication for depression that she's had since I can remember. I wish I could do a chart for her, but I don't think her birth information is accurate. Her birthcertificate says May 1st 1954, but she has no clue what time she was born at. She really is a mystery to me, especially since she's so non-communicative about herself...I really do have to probe her. Yet she barely remembers anything from her past, or at least acts like it!

She loves cooking with oil...good thing it's mostly olive oil that she uses. She loves to cook, and over cooks! She needs to cut down on red meat...I should get my parents to use Tofu...prevents a many cancers.

She doesn't skip meals...that's not a problem for her. Her portion sizes are reasonable, but I dont' monitor how much and what she eats. I have to convince her to write a food journal, somehow, so that she can monitor how and what she eats.

The way she's going....

I also heard coffee is good for you in moderation. She usually drinks tea though, because that's what she was raised on. Not sure if it has the same benefits as coffee. She does enjoy the taste of coffee though.

Hey taurean_scorpion

Where does your mother get the accupuncture needles applied? My mother's getting more physically active, so that's good! My father has to drag her out of the house for walks...but she's been cooperating lately so again that's good!

I'm going to try and post some info on diabetes over the next week or so.

Thanks t_s

Oh..you'd have to go to a place a do it. It probably won't be safe to do it yourself...

And i think besides working out and stuff its different..like if you have a very slow metabolism or you're kinda big on the top or bottom of your body..For example, if you're pear shaped, it could be genetics but in some cases it could be because you have poor circulation in that area.

Thanks for the tips taurean_scorpion I'd be afraid to try accupuncture on someone else I was just curious where the needles would be applied if you are diabetic, since this affects the entire body...would it be near the pancreas?

Found an excellent site on called the Diabetic Lifestyle... http://www.diabetic-lifestyle.com/

It's important to get frequent check ups...organs, immune system, eyes, and feet are susceptible to problems.

Here's one for footcare... http://www.podcare.com/diabetic-foot.html
