Congrats Sun Child!! I must admit i used this smae approach to quit smoking - nothing else seemed to work. I picked a date a couple weeks ahead of time. I began to tell myself these exact things, i hate smoking, i hate the smell, i dont smoke, etc ... and when the day came to give them up - i did it without any problems or urges to pick one up. I was smoke free for 5 months. My boyfriend continued smoking. It didnt bother me to the extent of wanting one, the smell is what got me. YUCK!!! It was so easy to give up, compared to all the other attempts while using products to detour my smoking habits. I had no cravings what so ever, and felt really good. More energy, no more sleep less nights, woke up feeling refreshed in the mornings instead of draggin outta bed. I never did "cough" anything up, like others had told me i would. It was amazing.
However, racing season started up again up here and the down time killed me - i made the mistake and picked up a cig. As of now, im smoking full bore again. I need to kick the habit once and for all. So again, i've picked a date toward the end of race season so i wont be tempted again. I will continue the affirmations and stop by Sept 1st it is!! - if not before.

COngrats again Sun Child - its a hard one to kick!!

I am totally stoked that I've done something like that, it feels like a big achievement.

Ang~ I have done the same thing as you once, I quit, and then began again, but this time my belief was more rigid, and I felt stronger inside too.
And of course, you can do it again!
I wish you all the best with that, I know you will!
Just visualise yourself as a non-smoker, I found that really helped, as you are instantly creating your future right now.
It's just like re-writing the future-script yourself!
Smoking with me was mainly a habbit, as I said it was really easy to kick but I felt a very mild craving when I went on Lindaland in the morning with a tea, it all just came back, but I recognised that feeling and just did something else and the craving went away.

Congratulations!!!

I am so glad and happy for you!!! It is the most discusting habit!!! I can't even stand to be near a smoker...........I can't stand the aftersmell on their clothes/body/breath.

As for me, still smoking, have quit many times. It's my pacifier. For now.
I'm so lonely. lol.

Outta curiosity, for the smokers out there (and Sun Child can answer this as well since she just gave them up - shes still know) What do you guys/gals pay for a pack of smokes? I'll tell you what i pay after i see some responses, i have a feeling our price here is higher than anywhere else - we've been hit with many local and state taxes with in the last couple years as well as a minor alcohal tax.

Ang ~Here they are $10.50.
Almost double what they used to be 10 years ago.

I also just wanted to ask something because in this past week I've put on a bit of extra weight and have been told by others that I'm slightly moody.
I think I'm a bit irritable, these could possibly be side effects that I'm trying to ignore.
How long do they last? Because just this morning I felt so frustrated that I wanted to stay in bed all day, but I got up and thought if I had a puff I would feel better.
So I lit one, but put it out straight away because the taste and the head spin was really dreadful.
So I ate two nougat rolls, instead.

I have a friend who won't quit (or so he says) because he's scared he'll put on weight. How about you get on the treadmill every time you want to puff? So you keep off the ciggies AND you lose weight...

WOW! I guess i am wrong after all ... we pay damn near $6.00 a pack. My hunny bought a carton the other day at a local grocery store (not a chain) and he paid $62.00 a carton. Otherwise we pay around $51.00 a carton. SC - Your prices are outrageous!! OMG.

SC - I too felt like that when i stopped. It was only the first few days really. I too picked up a smoke and thought, "if have just a couple lil puffs i'll be fine" I got nausus and lightheaded of just one puff. I too put it out and the taste was YUCKKKKK! After that lil bump in the road it was smooth sailing from there on out. Which i contribute to the fact that i "wanted" to quit. Like you!! I also have just gotten a puppy around the same time, which kept my mind off of smoking and kept me more active. See the problem alot of people have is "not knowing what to do with their hands" if you can keep your hands active and not pick up a cig or food, you'll be alright. Keeping yourself busy is the key. My mom found her problems to lie in the "routine factor" Her daily routine was to wake up, make coffee, sit down read the newspaper and have her coffee and a cig. She found that in order for her to control her cravings she had to vary her normal routine. So she instead woke up, made coffee, took a shower, read her newspaper somewhere other than the table. Its diffrent for everyone!!

Antoher idea, would be instead of picking up food, drink a glass of water. Help force them toxins out of your system and its healthy for you!! And of course exercise works great as well!! Also relieves stress!

Hey,

I don't often come to this section of LL, but decided to come tonight because I wasn't feeling so great. I say that only to let you know I'd have responded sooner if I had known.

I too quit through your method, and I was going to say something that you alluded to already, Sunchild, which is that I told myself I wasn't a smoker, that I don't smoke. I didn't do the hate affirmations (I hate the smell, etc.). I guess I felt it was more about changing me, than changing my perception of smoke itself. I also had to be in a very secure place in my life when I did it. Wouldn't have been good to do under stress.

You are probably feeling a bit of sickness related to the withdrawal. It's amazing how your lungs can seem to call out for the smoke. You can expect to feel varying degrees of terrible for at least 3 weeks. They say it takes 21 days to start a habit, so three weeks was a big milestone in my book.

You will still feel things here and there after those three weeks, but they'll be much easier to deal with. Your cravings will show up occasionally, but they're so much easier to say no to after you've established the habit of not smoking. The healing you have to deal with gets easier as your body is in a healthier place to deal with things.

AFter quitting through your method in the Navy I stayed quit for 8 months, even smoking occasionally (without letting the habit return). Silly me I started back smoking when I was transitioning out of the Navy using the stress as an excuse.

Now I'm a year-and-a-half smoke free. This time I quit using the patch and a girlfriend. Ironically, she still smoked whilst providing me the encouragement to quit. The patch probably ONLY works if you use it for the full amount of time that they recommend (6 weeks, I think). I tried the patch numerous times to no avail. You really have to be committed to it for the full length of time.

Oh, one more thought before I go. Another really neat thing to do to psyche yourself out is to imagine someone very special to you, and how proud they'll be of you when you quit smoking. Imagine how pleased they will be, and how proud and joyous you will feel from your accomplishment.

Quitting smoking is no easy task, so there's a great deal of pride and self-esteem that can come from quitting successfully.
