There was an undertone of sarcasm comparing what he ate and what we eat. Jesus did not partake of fermented wine. Hi guys! IP: Logged |

MAO @ TrillianHe didn't drink wine? Hm... Figured that was where that Blood of Christ business came from. I'm not really sure how wine got tied in with holiness. I don't know about others, but wine makes me feel a lot more drunk, a lot more quickly than beer (glass vs. bottle). IP: Logged |

I think that some claim that he just drank unfermented wine...or grape juice. But, because I'm a big dork, I decided to research the matter. The general consensus goes something like this: John the Baptist did not drink wine (oinos in the Greek) or any other form of alcohol because it was prophesied that he wouldn’t (Luke 1:15). However, Jesus Christ did drink oinos (wine) (Matthew 11:19; Luke 7:34). Jesus did not preach against the use of wine; instead he did like most other Jews of his day. He drank wine in moderation. In ancient times it was normally diluted with water for drinking, and was one of the principal beverages in Palestine at that time—as it is today. Jesus’ first miracle was to change water into wine (oinos). Some people who preach total abstinence claim that this miracle was to turn water into grape juice. Nonsense! Imagine if you can an elaborate Jewish wedding banquet where everyone drank only grape juice! (The ancients did not have refrigeration or any other method of preventing grape juice from fermenting.) (...) Another proof that oinos is fermented wine is the fact that the apostle Paul said, “Be not drunk with wine [oinos]” (Eph. 5:18). Paul did not mean to avoid getting drunk on grape juice! Paul instructed Timothy, “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine [oinos] for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities” (1 Tim. 5:23). He said to use only a little wine, not a whole lot. The purpose of this wine was Timothy’s frequent stomach ailments; small amounts of wine can help some stomach problems. Some of the Corinthians Christians were getting drunk at the Lord's Supper (1 Cor. 11:21). They were using fermented wine, probably following the example that Paul had set for them. Paul did not tell them that they were using the wrong kind of wine. He simply told them to eat and drink at home, and to participate in the Lord's Supper in a respectful way. In Romans 14:21, Paul says that it is good not to drink wine or eat meat if it offends a weak brother. He is referring to fermented wine; grape juice wouldn't offend anyone. The implication is that there's nothing wrong with the wine in itself, only if it offends a weak brother. IP: Logged |

Thanks, prox, I enjoyed reading that--sounds very reasonable. Moderation is the key. Some people have to abstain completely because they can't drink alcohol in moderation. I only have it rarely--I'm hypoglycemic and it doesn't quite agree with me....but I'm not a complete tea-totaller. IP: Logged |

My feeling is that, Jesus would rarely eat. His disciples would force him to eat sometimes. He was so engrossed in giving sermons he would lose track of time. And what he ate didn't matter to him, according to me. He once said , i am paraphrasing, "Its not what goes inside a man that defiles him, but what comes out of his mouth." Meaning do not bad mouth, it destroys your soul. The context was his disciples would eat without washing their hands first and the pharisees found it offensive. Jesus hits back on them. with that statement.

I found the book on the bargin rack! I felt Proxieme wispering in my ear, "It's almost free, go for it!" There's a cookbook that goes with it. The "Ezeliel 4:9 bread" (anyone wanna check that verse?) came from a combo of ingredients God came up with before having him lie on one side for x amount of time and the other side for x amount of time. You ever eat that stuff? Hard as a rock!I could be more specific, but I'm too lazy! IP: Logged |

Maybe I shouldn't introduce a serious note in a discussion about Jesu's eating preferences, but....If anybody is really interested. Which you should be because we ARE what we eat. Check out any of the many books by Edmond Bordeaux Szekely,International Biogenic Society. He was an ESSENE like Jesus. And one day the Church will stop suppressing the secrets of the Dead Sea Scrolls. IP: Logged |

hi I like serious ideas.I've read Szekely and I like him very much. Glad to see someone mention him. However, I think that old phrase "you are what you eat" is one of the most mistaken ideas out there. Rather, I believe we are what we think.

In the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus said :# 14 , what goes into your mouth does not defile you, what comes out of your mouth defiles you. ------------------ If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans. ~James Herriot IP: Logged |
