I've lost some weight since I've moved to Boston. I've always had a problem keeping myself nourished. My roommate is a kitchen nazi, and she sits in there and hogs up the kitchen for hours, or she sits at the kitchen table and criticizes what I do.

What are some good nutritious snakcs that don't require much cooking/preparation? Something thats haelhty with lots of calories that I could just pop in the microwave or make really quickly. I know some of you women must know! Thanks =)

I'm definatly not a pro, but I am lazy!
I buy frozen veggies or fruit at the market, toss them in the blender with some water or fruit juice and liqufy! The more variety of veggies, the better. Taste it and adjust to your liking. Sometimes I add a little grade B maple syrup to take the edge off the absolute veggie taste. She can't argue that!

Hi BR,

Here are some things that I've made:

* Peanut butter sandwiches using whole wheat bread

* Burritos - I like to use Amy's Organic Refried Beans with Green chiles. Just heat the beans and tortilla separate in the microwave, then wrap. Sometimes I'll add leftover meat or cheese to it.

* Baked potato - a large russet takes about 6 minutes to cook in the microwave. I made one today and topped it with creamed spinach (made from scratch with garlic, cheese and nonfat milk, but I think you can buy this frozen and just nuke as well).

* This one is a few more steps, but easy too: Preheat oven to 350F, get some naan bread and spread it with ready made cilantro chutney, top with your favorite veggies and/or already cooked meat, drizzle with olive oil, and add some nuts if you like, bake for 15-20 minutes. It smells really good.

I seldom eat meals, I normally just eat healthy snacks throughout the day. But I avoid the microwave like the plague so I have to be really inventive at times.

Get some thick rice/or corn puff cakes and smear with heaps of avocado, eat about 4 of them...they make you so full.I normally add lime juice/horseraddish/chilli and pepper for flavor.

Use some spelt bread, or rye, it's thicker and much more filling than flunky white bread and spread with avocado, and salad mix and make a sandwich, add some sprouts (very nutritious).

For something sweet I have dates dipped in almond butter. Or just some almond spread (like peanut butter) on rye.One of my favourite snacks is rolled oats in milk (soy/or rice) with sprinkled on craisins (cranberry raisins).

Get a peice of flat pitta bread and smear with tomtato paste add olives, pineapple, peppers, mushrooms, and onion and roll up (heat optional) and eat. It tastes like pizza.

Or have some couscous handy, just add water, and once it's puffed up, add pinenuts and raisins...wierd, but its very filling and yummy.

I'm still a student/apprentice of Reiki and will continue to be for a long time yet, but I'd love to ground a part time career out of it. I really enjoy healing and coming together with other healers. I hope to work along side a naturopath one day, but I still got a lot to learn.

And about the Microwaves, I know some will disagree, and some will say that it's only toxic when cooking with plastic, but I avoid using them entirely.
All my life I never owned one, until some time ago, and I knew they were terrible when I tasted food after cooking with it, the food was bland and almost inedible in my view.
So anyway, I did some research and found that they are a huge risk to health.
I never really liked the idea of heating food with radiation because it's not actual heat that's heating the food.
Rather the food's water and fat molecules are being zapped with radiation causing friction to heat the food. The molecular structure of the food is severely changed, and the result causes serious irregularities in our own blood and tissue with depressing side effects.

Sun Child, thank you for the info.
I stopped using m/w many years ago. But recently was tempted to start using it again since my kids are too lazy to warm up the food on the stove or in toaster oven. I couldn't find much info why it's harmful.

I definitely think it melts plastic into food, I woudlnt' put plastic in with my food, ever. Just like you wouldn't put plastic in the oven with your food.

It does ues a form of radiation, but once the microwave turns off theres no radiation left. Everything causes cancer anyway these days.

Any kind of nut - cashews, peanuts, etc. I like to buy the containers of mixed nuts at Costco for snacking

Peanut butter on anything

Refried beans (heated) on a corn tortilla (it's horrible, I know, but fry tortillas in hot oil until lightly crisp, drain on paper towels) with butter...used to eat this when I was growing up.

Tabouli on pita bread (can buy containers of Tabouli at Costco too)

Frozen mixed fruit - throw in the blender with some orange juice and a banana to thin for a smoothie

Are you vegetarian or a meat eater? Chili...

Yes well I do think I'm a bit eccentric with food, but it's because it's a hobby of mine!
I actually belong to a raw vegan empowered eating community, we all motivate eachother, and write journals. It's really something I enjoy.

Given what's considered to be normal, eccentric sounds like a tempting alternative.

are you trying to eat raw all the time? or just incorporating it in here and there? Your habit of eating small meal/snacks instead of the usual 3 huge plates of food is very reasonable - not what I'd call eccentric at all.

cilantro chutney can be bought fresh at Trader Joe's, ethnic food shops, gourmet shops, and health food stores.

haha yes you're quite right Tink...

I do try to eat raw all the time yes, (of what can be eaten raw) like most veggies and fruits. I would never cook them.
I still eat rice, breads and root veggies, even though they have to be cooked, I see nothing wrong with that.
My motivation for eating raw is to get the maximum nutrition possible from food.
Raw has been a recent thing, but I've been veggo/vegan for quite some time.

I find grazing better for the metabolism, but if you eat like that fasting once in a while is recommended.

Yummm...gonna try some of your suggestions, SunChild. I too got rid of the microwave; it does nasty things to food.

I don't aspire to be raw food or even necessarily completely vegan, but I admire those who are.

Indeed Trillian, raw foodism is not for everyone. Just making everyday healthy choices is what I like to see.
But yeah you should really try that couscous recipe, you can even use rice instead, it's just that pine nuts and raisins go so well together.

A couple of people have said, "Peanut butter!", but I'll add-on:
Nice, natural peanut butter with a fresh, crisp green apple
The contrasting flavors and textures are quite nice.

You can just cut up the apple and bring that, a little spoon or knife, and your jar with you to a nice study spot, then absentmindedly pop in bits of the apple and dobs of the PB as you read.

Plastic melts at high temperatures, if he doesnt' believe you Prox just tell him to put some saran wrap in an oven, the plastic melts into your food and you eat it. Plastic is not suposed to be eaten.

But that's the date when the government says the consumption of the absorbed plastic chemicals is no longer safe.

More easy nutrition.
I love salad sandwiches! I buy sprouted grain breads, which even some grocery stores now carry. Then I spread a little hummus on one piece, and some vegenaise on the other. In between, lots of veggies. Tomatoes, olives, capers, lettuce, cukes, whatever is around. It's my favorite lunch, but sometimes I also have it for breakfast. Ymmmmm.
