Can anyone give me tips on how to avoid wheat/gluten in my diet? And keep my nutrition levels up (eg B vitamins, which I may be lacking in)

Im finding it extremely difficult... I avoid obvious things like bread etc but I've found that "wheat flour" is used in almost everything - even some chocolates and baked beans!! its shocking (and Im not convinced that it is neccessary either).

Does anyone know how to have a healthy nutritious diet while avoiding wheat? (Also I do not eat eggs, which cuts out even more foods considerably). Its a friggin nightmare.

Hi Moonshine

yes it is very difficult, but we get bread made for our son with spelt flour and you can buy biscuits and cakes that are wheat free in england too I am sure. Have a look around the health shops and supermarkets, they can be bought these days.

Good luck

Splet is a grain, one that was common in ancient times and feel out of favor during the indutrrial era and the prominence of corn and wheat (ironically, two grains that commonly cause allegries!). Spelt does not contain the protein gluten, which causes allegric reactions.

Other grains and flours that do not contain gluten are arrowroot, oat, buckwheat, rice, potato and soy. Finding gluten free baked products can be hard if you don't live by a health food or organic food store, or a Wild Oats, Sun harvest or Whole Foods chain store (I don't think you have those over int he UK).

Try googling for a gluten-free diet sites - there should be plenty.

If you think gluten is causing a B12 deficiency, you may be coeliac, and here's a site for that (it's a UK site too):

Spelts great, I like spelt spaghetti alot too! Tastes completly normal but you don't feel so bloated.
Definatly check out the health food stores, particulary the small ones in towns.
