You need 6, 7.5 or 9 hours!
http://glenrhodes.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=54&Itemid=9

This guys not a scientist but he has the right idea. A professor of mine in college lectured on this topic. You want to wake up during "REM" sleep, this is the lightest part of your sleep and is at the top of your sleep cycle. If you wake up during deep sleep you'll feel groggy ALL DAY. Getting 8 hours is a misconception, because sleep cycles under 90 min intervals (these can shrink with age), but just try to sleep in these intervals and see how you feel!

ONe weekend, try sleeping without an alarm or anything external to wake you up. Figure out the total time and try diving it by a number like 90 mins, 80 mins, 70 mins until you get a nice round number. This is the length of each sleep cycle!

Also, a 1.5 hour nap during the day can work wonders!

9 hours is fine, you never need more sleep than that unless you're an adolescent, and even then 9 is enough for most people.

If you sleep for ex 6 hours on a weekday, you might want to take a 1.5 hour nap during the day. I've been trying to do 7.5 hours of sleep, but I feel tired with that much sleep, even though I'm almost 24 I still need 9 I think.

I sleep between 4-6 but then I might nap later in the day.
My sleep is all over the place...I don't really need as much as I used to. And I nearly always wake up during a dream, no matter how long I've slept..I'm always dreaming every morning...but I never feel tired all day.. I feel great.

Well I'll try the multiples of 90minutes and see if that is better...I'll just set an alarm.

It's an interesting article. Thanks!

Waking up out of dreams doesn't make you tired, in fact its when you're "supposed" to wake up. REM sleep is when you dream, and its the lightest form of sleep, and actually has similar brainwave patterns to being awake. If you time on 90 min cycles you wlil wake up at the end of a REM phase and probably remember dreams. People who never remember dreams are often waking up in the wrong part of their sleep cycle.

Well now that I read the article I realize some things.

I went from 7.5 hrs to 7 on worknights due to a new job assignment and I just don't feel right. I need 7.5 or maybe 6 would do it.
Sometimes if im out late i get a couple of less hours sleep but seem to feel fine . I must have been in the right sleep cycle time or something.

Im going to try to work with this.

My husb wont nap on weekends because he cant get up. Well i always set the alarm for 2 hours. Im going to do 1.5 next time ( this one , i hope) and see what he says.

Hey!
I just wanted to add something here about sleep and stuff.
I think there is no right rule when it comes to sleep.
Everybody are different and need more sleep than others.
To me 6 hours sounds very little.
I need like 9 or 10 hours, and there was a time when I actually slept for 12 hours.
From midnight til noon
And I felt absolutely great.
If I get up early, like 8, I will be very depressed all day.
Like I am walking around in some kind of psychosis. I will cry and feel so low and weak, its horrible....
But when I get those extra hours, I function optimal.
An hour less for instance would make a huge difference and bring my energy level to a very painful place that whole day.
Sleep is the most important thing in life.
It heals you and makes your brain and nerve system function optimal.
Some people might not need more than 5 or 6,
but I find that to be too little.
But then again, sleep gets rid og stress, and how people have stress and react to stress in their every day life is so very different from person to person.
Its very difficult to do studies on sleep,
all because its all so deep in every persons own subconscious soul and identity and soullife. Sleep is about working out past experiences and some imagination and your own personal thoughts and wishes.
What if someone has a nightmare for instance, about something traumatic,
they will probably feel foggy the whole next day.
And some research lab wont give much good answers to why it was like this and that..

Love,
Anita

Very good points. The true function of sleep is still unknown, although it feels like it refreshes us and we die without it, we still dont' know exactly what happens to the brain when you sleep. Why do you need to be unconscious insead of just lying there to rets the body?

Almost all people wake up naturally though in multiples of 1.5 hours though. Of course there's alwasy exceptions to the rule.

Sleep research is necessary and saves the lives of people with disorders like sleep apnea, sleep walking, and night terrors.

I had a teacher in high school who had this theory...that our bodies don't really need sleep, but we sleep to rid our minds of troubles and get rid of bad energy. Something like that, i can't describe it as well. And then I had a friend (a piscean) who thought he could live off of 15 mins of sleep daily! I said...have fun with all of that!

I have been practicing this and for me it seems to be working. all weekend 7.5 hrs at night and one 1.5 hr nap. Sunday night 7.5 hrs. ok at work, less brain foggy.
Last night 6 hrs. i am tired ( i like a lot of sleep) but i am clear headed. Now i can see why on a day like today a 1.5 hr nap would do me good but I won't have time. Tonight i will do 7.5 hrs.
I think i like this. Usually by thursday or friday at work im so brain tired I can hardly think. I will see how I am this week.

Very interesting, BlueRoamer! When I read your topic header, my immediate thought was "You're right....I need 9"! I thought I was being "cheeky," but it turns out I was right. I actually do need 9 hours. Amazing! When I do have to cut it back, however, I'll keep in mind to shoot for multiples of 1.5 hours. This actually is a revelation for me. Thanks!
