I need some info. I am planning a fast with some people for Lent, not for 40 days though, just 3-6 perhaps. Not sure yet. It will be juice and water. Can anyone provide me with tips and knowledge from real experience? Like duration for a beginner, what is the best ingredients to use?(I have a juicer), and how much juice ? ect.. I don't have extra $ to buy books and products this month..so don't recommend anything like that. I just want to know what to expect, do I have to rest? Because I need to work. IP: Logged |

Edited: No...a three day fast should cause no problems. My error...read too fast...caught the 40 day fast bit but not the 3 day fast bit Ooops! ********************************************* Ok...now for the original post Lightheadedness can be a factor until your body adjusts. I would recommend a vitamin/mineral suppliment. You do not want to compromise your electrolyte balance. This is the cause of many of the sudden deaths in anorexics. And do not come out of a fast rapidly. Add a little food each day until you are back to normal. If your muscle mass is normal to low...be very careful! The protien requirements of the heart muscle will canabolize your other muscle mass to aquire the protien it needs. Also..our brains are made up of cholesterol...you need some to keep it working in proper synapic transfer efficiency. I have been on prolonged fasts. If you are already thin...you could lose too much weight. If a person is heavy, the rapid weight loss initially in mostly water can severely mess up the electrolyte balance. I guess the main thing is ease into it and ease out of it. Watch for lightheadedness and use extreme caution when driving. Euphoria can set in...so judgement can be impaired. This is not a time for intense exercise plans or the alternate, little activity. The heart needs to know its balance so as to not atrophy at all..so move enough to keep its muscles strong. Have you ever done this before? Also before a fast..especially a prolonged one...I would advise getting a physical exam first. Anemia and other factors can be things that are worsened by a fast. If you can handle the taste, Pedalyte and other electrolyte drinks for children and adults, who cannot eat, is a good balancer for your electrolytes. Without buying books on the subject, get them from a library or Google "Fasts and Fasting", that should give you some ideas. Good luck! It can be a rewarding experience! Ahh...one more thing! Start it on a weekend not a work day. Get plenty of rest. And no partying!

SunChild:The lemonade used in the "Master Cleanse" will provide you with all the nutrients your body needs. However, as you said you don't have extra cash to spend on supplies (unrefined maple syrup is a bit expensive), but do have a juicer, I'd recommend lemonade made from fresh lemons. Lemons are the most complete source of vitamins and minerals of any single food on earth. I doubt a 3-day fast will cause you any problems, as you're probably quite healthy to begin with. Have fun. Hey!Another thing you might want to do to help your body out before you fast is to eat only raw food in the day or two leading up to the fast and then again after the fast as well. I have found that this really helps. For juices, I do pineapple or carrot or lemon or a mix of these. Love

Hey thanks everyone! I laughed when you thought I was doing 40 days...lol... I've decided I'll do 3 then see how I feel and maybe do 5, max. I've been raw vegan for a long time now, and I'm not under weight or over weight, so I think I'll be fine. Thanks for the lemon idea Paras, I LOVE lemons! I heard drinking them with warm water is a good start for a detox. I'm going to start March 1!

Grapefruit juice should be avoided. It can alone leech too many minerals out of your system. I have been on a 62/30 day fast before. But most of mine have been only 3 to 20 days.IP: Logged |

Good Luck Sun Child I personally believe that the body actually feels better after a good fast. (cleans out all the impurities) It would probably be wise to drink plenty of liquids (no not beer )but juice and water you don't want to dehydrate. IP: Logged |

The Master Cleanse was quite an experience. There's a thread around here somewhere about it. I did that one, fasted for 11 days.I think it's a good thing for people to fast one day a week or one week out of a month. I fast for a day every so often. Dont stick to any particular rules, just drink alot of water. It feels so much better to eat less. Food really weighs you down - me at least. Vibration-wise, I can feel it. Lately even when I'm hungry (stomach is growling) I still dont want to eat. Body says I'm hungry but I dont feel like I am. Strange. Sorry I dont have any great advice, SC. But I know you'll be fine. Let us know how you feel durning/afterwards. Good luck! IP: Logged |

Thanks 26, and loe! Omg I'm starting the fast on Wednesday. I hope to go until Sunday. I have to eat all the food in my house over the next couple of days. BUT there's a huge raw date/nut torte in the fridge~ what a shame, I have to eat it all at once! I just realized since I went raw I have no addiction for food anymore, but I can enjoy food in a different way. Like what you are saying 26, about the stomach rumbling but no need to eat? I feel like that alot! I don't have to really stuff my face that much. And I'm really loving the subtle tastes of fruits and veggies by themselves. I can have a smoothie in the morning and not feel hungry til 4 or 5. Wierd. Anyway, I plan on drinking lots of filtered water, wheatgrass, green veggie juices and some fruit juices. ------------------ Wonder of it All

I had read online about using lemon juice, and tobasco sauce, with water, for a deep clean detox. And didn't think I could handle that much tobasco in my system, and then go to looking for fruit detox.I work with a woman who use to work as a ER Nurse (years). I ask her, in the hospitals, what was the very best juice they used for a juice fast flush. she said you could use any of them, but Orange Juice was the very best. She told me to mix up 3 gallons of OJ, and only 3 gallons, drink only that. By the time your finished, every single thing with in you has been totally flushed clean of all toxins. I've been doing it off and on for a month now (cause OJ is my fave anyway), and can really tell a big difference in the way I feel. Haven't had any problems with holding fluid, causing my feet and legs to swell, and other stuff... And I've lost more weight. IP: Logged |

Cool ~ whats a Gallon in the metric system? I guess I could look that up myself. Oh I do love Tobasco Sauce...I used to go through a bottle a week! I wouldn't say no to that. IP: Logged |

I'm not sure... Do a search of google with the key words 'conversion table' and it should bring up some links to some.I'm thinking, a liter is just a bit more than a gallon. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the info, Ginger, I could really use a cleansing... BTW, does it matter if the OJ is a Minute-Maid or Tropicana type, or should we try to find an organic variety for best results?I'm excited to try this... Hey VAA Try buying a huge bag of Oranges and squeeze your own, the bottled stuff is usually pasteurised and denatured. I would only suggest that if you want the BEST results, that is. IP: Logged |

SunChild, how did your fasting go? How did you feel?Did you have any of the side effects fayte mentioned, lightheadedness etc.,? Speaking of wheatgrass - does anyone know where to find it already juiced? The only place I've found it fresh was at JambaJuice, but would kind of like to either juice it myself or buy it. Any ideas anyone?
