I've been on the "trying to quit coffee" cycle for years now. On the bad side of it, it is acidic and therefore bad for your stomach if you have too much of it; it can stimulate your nervous system too much (I know this from its effects on my nerves - it can also in this way contribute to anxiety attacks); and it raises your heart rate. It also kills the good bacteria in your digestive tract, which includes your tongue down to your stomach, and in my opinion it kills the good bacteria in the genito-urinary system. It takes over three hours for the good bacteria to start reproducing again, and in the meantime the bad bacteria populates your body, which can lead to candida albicans (thrush)... I had candida in my digestive system years ago which contributed to severe chronic fatigue! Is that enough 'bad facts' about coffee to help you quit? IP: Logged |

I've heard and read a lot of bad things regular coffee can do to a body, then in the same breath they say to switch to decaf. Maybe you could try "downsizing" by drinking the 50/50....half the caffeine.?IP: Logged |

If you have a nagging voice in your soul that is telling you to stop, then you should listen I feel that way too when I drink coffee, I KNOW that its not good for me. The nervous system that is. They say that it has many anti oxidans or however thats spelled, but so does berries, so eat those instead It does make your heart beat faster and it is some kind of stress to the body, which is helping on bringing your immunesystem down and age quicker. Its a matter of habit though, I try to "brainwash" myself to drink green tea after dinner instead of a cup of coffee, and it helps when I think about how the stomach gets upset and I get more nervous and aching somehow, and I say to myself taht its not really that neccessary to drink that cup. Green tea makes me feel refreshed and pure, and is more rewarding for me

Recent studies have shown that coffee fights alzheimers, and I believe heart disease as well. Don't quote me on this, but i think if you google it you'll find some answers.IP: Logged |

I've heard that coffee's antioxidants aren't as effective as the antioxidants found in tea. Plus, coffee does overall suppress your immune system, whereas tea actually boosts it. I think it's fine to drink one cup of a coffee a day though. That way you can get the reported benefits without overdoing the bad side. IP: Logged |

I get neg effects from too much coffee-- everything listed above. I have switched to teas instead.I really don't like green tea by itself, so I play with flavors. Green & fresh ginger are my fav. I also love Chai tea (beware it can overheat your system. I've found that teas reduce moisture in the system (phlem). Green & black tea have caffine buffers, so you don't get as jittery. I do still love a good cup of coffee now & then, but really have to keep it to a minimum. Just play around until you find some teas that are just as yummy as the coffee. Now you'd have to fight me to get my teas from me! IP: Logged |

Some decent natural coffee 'substitutes' I've tried that have serious health benefits are dandelion root and chicory. I've also tried what's called 'French coffee', it contains dandelion and chicory along with a very minimal amount of real coffee. This could be a good one for trying to wean yourself off the real thing. The nice thing about dandelion root tea/coffee is that it has a strong coffee-like flavour and is also a natural stimulant, which I find to be better than caffeine. It also cleanses your liver at the same time! IP: Logged |

I love the taste but a cup of caffeine can cause tachycardia in myself since i have a heart problem called SVT. I've been hearing good stuff about coffee - mainly that it stimulates brain function andcould lead to less Alzheimer's ---- Supposedly(???)IP: Logged |

salome,To be honest, I LOVED coffee a lot! I still love its aroma. Too bad I had a larynx surgery two years ago, and I have had to forego many foods and beverages, coffee being one of them My favorites are Latte and Mocha. Or plain instant coffee with cream would have been just fine! I loved the smell and the taste of coffee! One thing I would love to try is Irish coffee However, loe, Each of every individual's body functions in its idiosyncratic way, hence different responses to coffee, or caffeine in everything; in a medical sense, coffee is one of the substances which may induce mania. That is to say, the case might be more serious than insomnia (but oddly some people would suffer from insomnia if they didn't have their coffee before bedtime!). Also, for those who have developed caffeine dependence and find it a disturbance, may have to face caffeine withdrawal, which would not feel very pleasant. Still, most of us can enjoy the wonder of coffee at least every now and then and salome, I look forward to more fantastic ideas from you! ------------------ May not be able to get back to you...appreciate your say nevertheless...D IP: Logged |
