I wonder if anyone has information about this... My husband had what sounds to me like a gran mal this afternoon at work... he is almost 31 and has never had any epileptic episodes... Upon being informed of this, I recieved another call from our friend, who's husband works with mine... She asked me if I would look up on-line the name of her neurologist, because she had just been dropped off at home due to having another seizure while at her place of work this morning! This is her second in about as many weeks but,... she had been seizure free for damned near 2 1/2 years.. without taking the meds she has been perscribed... A few weeks ago, she had the first of these recent two, while at my house. She has known for a long while about her epilepsy and, even though her seizures do not seem to be like what I hear my husband's was like, this whole event is very scarey... for ALL of us!! Has heat ever been a consideration regarding seizure episodes? My husband does'nt remember much about this experience, except that he became very nauseous upon his returning to work after lunch. He asked his brother to take his position and was apparently going to sit and try to figure out his upset but, he recalls becoming very disoriented and that is all he knows of it. It was another crew member who witnessed him fall down and he says that his arms were stiff and that his eyes rolled back.... he was unconscious for at least 5 minutes,... possibly longer as he is said to have come to at about the same time that the ambulance arrived. He did not know where he was, who his own brothers were or, who HE was! His two bro's, who saw most of this entire event, were absolutely terrified and, his younger bro told me he feared my husband might be dying... Uhh ... he said he was making the most awful sound and, in fact, my hubby did bite down at some point on his tongue! He suffered no concussion in the fall... thankfully. This has me completely freaked out! Adding to it, our friend's morning episode AND, to boot, found out that his cousin, who is younger than our son, has just been diagnosed as epileptic... found that out when my Love finally arrived home today...
About all I understand of epilepsy, is that the word itself is used as sort of a blanket term, describing a seizure condition... that nothing is sure with regard to the why's, where's and otherwise...? Which makes for fear... So, if anyone has anything that makes it a little less foggy for me...I could appreciate nothing more. He is my One.
Endless Thanks.

I have no experience with epilepsy in humans, but I do have a dog who has seizures occasionally. They started out small, he would just freeze for about thirty seconds. They've progressed into larger ones over the years, and it *is* scary; I really feel for you.

Heat has caused one of Walter's seizures in the past. July 7th, 2002, he was out in the hot weather for a little while with the other dogs, barking away at some men working on something for the neighbours. He came in and started to stumble a bit ~ that was his first grand mal that I knew of. (I caught him before he fell). His sister Emily had a couple of seizures late last year, but (touch wood), she hasn't had a problem since.

I wish I could help you out. Idiopathic epilepsy is what it's called when there's no known cause. I can tell you that I keep Walter's diet as preservative-free as possible. I give him rescue remedy in milk or natural vanilla ice-cream when the seizure is over with - that helps to regulate the blood sugar levels. I also hold an ice-pack to his lower back, if I can somehow get one in time.. the last one he had, earlier this month, my parents were here, and my Mother grabbed it for me.

Oh! I've just remembered a site that I found last December, but I can't remember the man's name. I'll have a look for it and post the link.

Here you go:

Don't let the name mislead you, it isn't *all* about animals. Last year, I read testimonials from people who had been positively affected by his diet.

Is he taking any of the Prozac family of drugs?
They can cause fatal seizures even if previously taken with no adverse affects.
Has he had any recient vaccinations or head injury or migranes that came on without warning?
One more thing...
Water intoxication can upset the electrolyte balance and cause seizures. So can extreme sweating.
I am too familiar with various types of seizures, having almost lost two people I love to these things.
Get him tested.
Believe me, reviving a person is no damn fun at all.
And I myself have had seizures.
Not all seizures are epilelptic.
Testing is needed.

Teaselbaby, Fayte,... Thank You! I appreciate your replies, so very much.

Teaselbaby ~ I will be going through the info on the site link you gave. I feel greatly, for you and your pups. When I was about 10 I got a 3 month old cocker spaniel... 'Tammy'. Upon arriving home from school a few days after getting her, I walked in the house and saw that my dad was on the phone and very uneasy. He pointed toward the corner. There was the sweetest little black furball anxiously sitting with a her unsure excitedness. What she was unsure of was her sight. We believe that she had an encounter with one of my 3 horses, which left her with one eye being almost ejected from it's socket. It was an incredible and weird experience. 9 years later she began having seizures and the damaged eye was found to be the source. It was consequently, removed. She did, however, suffer seizure episodes for the remainder of her life. After it's removal though, she was much different and, actually became quite the puppy once more Thankfully she went on for about 11 more years... re-born.
We were fortunate enough to know why she had become epileptic and, this made it easier to treat her and see that the rest of her existance would be free of seizures. Not knowing makes for a lot of uneasiness and fear of the 'what if's'... be it human or other creature companion. In this respect, we are very much in the same boat. Thank You for the link and, your empathy.

Fayte ~ We were actually thinking de-hydration, as he was observed all morning NOT drinking his usual amount...this was noticed by the fellow crew member who is also our friend and, who's wife also had a seizure the very same morning.
He is not on any meds but, was hit by a car and, subsequently in exploratory surgery, is now less his spleen and 1/3 of a kidney. This happened when he was 6 years old and he is now almost 31 and, he has not had any sign of the accident ever having occured at all.
We don't get vaccinations and his last head injury was almost 10 years ago... he fell off of a wall at work and the following diagnosis was mild-concussion. He seems to get headaches quite frequently, though not anything that Ibuprophen hasn't handled for him. I have always been concerned about the frequency of his headaches though.
I do appreciate all the insight that you may be able to provide.

Again, many Thanks to You both.
