It used to reach my waist, with lots of volume. After putting in black hair dye, it thinned down considerably. I stripped away the black color, which just worsened its condition.

I also cut it very short, to grow out the damage. Now, it isn't growing as fast or as thick as it was. I really miss having my hair long ):

I read Iron will help, but I also know large amounts of Iron are harmful. Is their anything else that will help? I'm looking more for internal assistance vs. some hair product.

Thanks,

D

Time after time, I have heard from pregnant women that pre-natal vitamins have made their hair and nails grow strong and healthy. I'm not generally a big fan of commercial vitamins, but if you buy a higher grade, and use them for a finite period of time...

Also, coconut oil added to your diet can help. You can read all about coconut oil on Dr. Mercola's website. I think it's www.mercola.com. If that doesn't work do a google search. You don't have to buy the brand he recommends, but be sure that you buy only organic, virgin coconut oil that is unrefined. Go to your local health food store for it. The type I buy is about $24 for a gallon. You need about 3 tablespoons a day. It should have a slight scent of coconut. I use it in my smoothies, on toast, on rice...

As for iron, part of it is what type of iron you use/ingest. Do some research on it. Try the mercola site.

Let me think about this some more...it seems to me that there is something else, that I can't currently recall...

I remembered!

Brewer's Yeast. You can find brewer's yeast tablets at any health food store, or even at Wal-mart. Take 3-5 of these tablets a day, and you will notice a difference in your hair, probably within weeks. Makes it soft and silky.

And one other thing. I use baking soda in my shampoo once a week or so. Makes it super-clean and shiny, and strips out all the build up of all hair products ( I don't use much, but it still builds up). Using this might help to strip out the dye in your hair. Not sure about that, but I doubt it will hurt.

Thanks, I am def. going to research that site. And no more black hair dye for me(: Not only did it mess up my hair, but the color looked awful on me.

I do remember seeing the Brewer's Yeast at Wal*Mart. I will start with that and the prenatal vitamins, until I find a place that carries coconut oil.

I just remembered a friend of mine using Prenatal Vitamins after having Stomach Bypass SUrgery. I'm not sure why her her thinned out after the procedure, but the vitamins seemed to help.

Horsetail. I take it in a supplement called Silicaplex.

Also, protein helps your hair to grow faster and keeps it strong. I take spirulina, which has a good amount of protein in it as well as the B vitamins, iron, and other minerals. When I take this stuff my hair grows ultra fast! I can't recommend it enough to you.

I'm in a similar situation to you, so I'm doing all I can. I went from blonde to a disgusting dark, DARK red. Like a black-red. It didn't suit me at all! Then the hairdresser I went to tried to fix it my putting a "lighter" shade of red on top of it. It was still awful. So I went to a better hairdresser who said that shouldn't have been done because it would have been possible to lighten it to blonde again in one hit. But with the permanent put over the top of the original dark red, it was now a hard job to deal with. So he lightened it twice more with some highlights - it looks way better now but I have to go back for more work on it in a few weeks. He's doing it in a way that will minimise the damage. But still, my hair is noticeably more damaged after having been through a colouring process FOUR TIMES in one week.

Good luck! I know how frustrating it is to suddenly have a hair disaster... all you want to do is turn back the clock!!!

a long time ago, when I was a meow cosmo girl, I read and followed using olive oil and an egg mixed together and leaving it in overnight several times a month-When my hair turned to straw this helped EXTREMELY- of course, the "dead" hair will need to be trimmed often. Good luck!

I know everyone has already offered a huge variety of things to try, but what worked for me that made my hair and nails grow out of control is MSM.
(something we barely get in our diets)

quote:
MSM is a naturally-occuring form of dietary sulfur found in fresh foods that are involved in the cycle of rain. MSM is deficient in foods grown in greenhouses or in foods grown through irrigation. MSM is volatile and destroyed by cooking. In the body, MSM softens leathery internal tissues by rebuilding connective tissue with elastic sulfur bonds. This is how MSM lives up to its reputation of building collagen and maintaining healthy hair, bones and nails.

Because of its collagen-building properties, MSM creates smooth skin, thick lustrous hair, and strong nails. MSM makes the tissues more permeable so that they may move nutrients in and toxins out with greater ease. MSM has a remarkable effect at neutralizing foreign proteins (i.e. allergens, toxins, undigested food) making it anti-inflammatory. MSM works particularly well in conjunction with vitamin-C rich foods. MSM usually in a white crystaline powder that can be added to water.

You can buy MSM (organic sulfur from most health food store or search for it online)

And do not forget de-stressing...

Stress effects all of our body processes, hindering the body's ablity to re-generate itself.

For many years I wanted long hair, and tried and tried and tried, but was very stressed out in many aspects of life.

When I began to alieviate my stressors, my hair grew. Now at 44, I have what my daughter calls "hippi hair" almost to the top of my bottem. I have it professionally highlighted every 3 months and cut, blow dry it as infrequently as possible, and take care in the sun and sea and rarely do chlorine. Basic care is paramount!

My hair is about 4 feet long.
I wash it with the cheapest shampoo, like Suave or White Rain.
I never brush it while wet.
I do not use a hair dryer etcetera.
I do use a detangler like Citre Shine or other polishers you brush or comb through dry hair and leave on. My hair is quite coarse.
Also adequate protein intake and folic acid too and at least a tablespoon of any oil you choose to consume.
