hi Trillian,
i just have a question about pills that are availabe in the pharmacy and nutri stores for hair growth skin and brittle nails.
i suffered from hair loss for many years now , i had many diffrent blood test don but everything was normal!
i personaly feels its because of the chemicaly treated water and stress.
i have browsed through a lot of products and i have used a number of natural home remedies but non of them worked........ i feel the problem is internal rather that applying anything externaly.. i read in one of your post in which you mention brewers yeast...
i had used it for 1 year but no result.. i was hoping if you knew anything else that might help me...
currently i am looking at these products but doubt their ingredients... i would highly appreciate it if you could just advise me on choosing a product that maybe safe to use, i dont want any terrible side effects.
Solgar skin hair and nail tablets.
natures bounty hair and nail tablets
maxi-hair
and many more... http://www.hair-growth-vitamin.com/ingredients.htm

I am not Trillian to answer your question.

But earlier I faced similar problem. I used Rogaine for Men which is 5%, my Dermatologist suggested me. Even I was using one more scalp liquid before using Rogaine which was making the base, I will check the name if you are interested. It took me few years but my hair are restored and I am still used to it.

DTG Well, the first thing to consider when using Brewer's Yeast, is what sort did you use? There can be a world of difference between the sort you buy at the pharmacy for $3, and the organic whole food you get from a health food store or organic supplier.

Have you had your thyroid checked? Hair and nail problems are often related to thyroid troubles. It's a simple blood test that I would urge you to have soon. I would then advise lots of natural healing, and I can point you in the direction of several possibilities.

Iodine deficiency can also indicate thyroid problems. A simple way to find out if you are iodine deficient (and it's estimated that 80% of Americans are) is to paint a two inch square of iodine tincture on your belly. If it's gone within 24 hours, you are deficient.

I'm not an expert on these matters. What I can say is that most commercial products that contain "vitamins" are next to worthless, or have long-term disadvantages to our health. I went to the link you provided, but I don't get a good vibe from those products at all. I like natural, organic herbs. Most vitamins are made from products our bodies can't even absorb.

If you think your problems stem from chemically treated water and stress, remove them! Do what you can to reduce stress. Start to detox your body! And drink only pure water. (Forget most bottled waters; most of them come from municipal water sources, same as you drink from your tap.)

I cannot in good conscience recommend rogaine or any other chemical that comes from a pharmaceutical company. In my opinion, based on research I've done, they are all toxins that have adverse long term effects on your body.

I will see what else I can find for you.

What are the natural home remedies you tried?

trillan thanks for your reply.
the home remidies that i have tried in the past 5 years are: (this is going to be a bit gross but pls bear with me )

1- i applied heena powder mixed with curd, egg and olive oil the result was very dry hair and a very itchy scalp, my hair still broke, it was still very weak and broke even more everytime i washed it.

2- i applied amla, skikakai, ritha powder which is supposed to be a hair strengthning tonic but it left my scalp exteremly itchy.

3 i have applied all kinds of oils.. olive oil, coconut oil, mustard oil, sesame seed oil, almond oil.

4- i even went to the extent of applying a raw onion.. which i read helps people suffering from hair loss...

5- tried egg yolk as i head it is full of protiens so it helps the hair loss problem..the smell was horrible..

and many more... but nothing stoped the hairloss... my problem keept on getting worse and now i have lost about 2/3 of my hair... my scalp from the top and right in the middle is so obvious that many people have told me to do something..
just today i ran my fingers gentley through my hair and broke about 10-20 strands.. it is just getting worse

i will defenitly do the thyroid test that you have mentioned because i have very brittle nails and the surface is also very riged and bumpy...

regarding the chemicaly treated water and stress, i started using mineral water to wash my hair but i did it for 3 months but saw no diffrence so i stoped.

i forgot the name of the brewers yeasty brand i was using but i picked it up from a drug store.. a white colour bottle..
do you have any sugestions of any particular brand that is really good?

thanks again for your time trillian..

26T, I miss you...and I hope you are well and happy. Do you still have my email address? I don't think I have yours, please write to me...

DTG, yes, definitely have the thyroid test. You might be deficient in iodine. It's estimated that 80% of Americans are. Here is a link to a website that I find to be of great value, and specifically to a page where people share their own hair loss cures:
http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/hair_loss.html

If you choose to use anything, even brewers yeast or apple cider vinegar, pay the extra few dollars to buy certified organic. Go to your health food store and check out the brewers yeast there. The stuff you buy at the pharmacy is not very strong, overly processed, etc. When buying apple cider vinegar, you want the raw, unprocessed that contains the "mother," which makes it look a little cloudy. Most people buy the Bragg brand, which is what I use.

I don't know what your eating habits are, but I would advise you clean those up too.

Rogaine is toxic poison. It may regrow your hair in the short term, but in the long term it will cause you serious health problems. Just take a look at all the possible side effects.

Also, use shampoos from the health food store that do not contain laureth sulfate. These are hard to find. Perhaps use very mild glycerin soaps instead.

I will give this more thought...

In good health...

I don't want to misrepresent myself as an herbalist or expert in the field of natural healing. I am a student, with a passion to learn.

Personally, I know of no reason why you can't take the two of those together. If you have concerns, take one in the morning, and one in the evening. If you have read that they are synergistic, then continue to study and experiment.

And don't disregard the power of healing from within. Thank you Universe daily for your healing, and visualize a full head of healthy hair!

HI trill....
u advised me in one of the post to have a thyroid test done for the hairloss and brittle nails problem that i am suffering from, i would like to know what is it exactly called because when i went to a clinic they asked me which thyroid test ... something like t3,t4 or ths....not sure!
so i didnt know if i needed all to be done or just a particular one... i didnt do any so pls let me know the exact test that i need to determine the cause of my problems. btw i took an online (Qs and Answers)thyroid test and it did say that i suffer from a 40% thyroid problem.

btw i have tried all sorts of remedies again but no result so i am guessing it is nothing but a thyroid problem!

i used a nail hair and skin tablet that contained brewers yeast, horsetail extract and more stuff its 3 months i even massage my hair with a mixture of oils including coconut, olive , castor, sesame, mustard ...bla bla bla..!and still everyday when i brush my fingrs through my hair i lose 40-80 strands of hair everyday!!...
my scalp is quite visible from the top... i see my pictures taken from 1-6 years back and can see the diffrence every year... i dont like it!

DTG, I'm not sure where you live. And do you have insurance that will cover the cost of the test? If so, you might want to consider having all of the thyroid tests done.

The standard test is for TSH, but knowing the levels of T3 and T4 can also be important. If you can only afford one test, have the TSH done. Most practitioners believe your TSH should be between .3 and 3.0.

Anything over 3.0 is hypothyroid, or underactive.

Anything under .3 is hyperthyroid, over overactive.

But both can cause the kind of hair loss of which you speak.

I would recommend reading the books by Mary Shomon, a patient advocate for those who have thyroid disease.

You can also do a lot of research at www.about.com. Just type in thyroid, and you will get pages and pages of information that can serve as at least a partial education.

Keep in mind that I am not an expert. Thyroid is only one possibility causing your problems, but I do believe it would be in your best interest to know your TSH. At the very least, you could rule it out and proceed elsewhere. By the way, TSH stands for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone.

I wish you healing...

thanks trill,...
i know you are not an expert but atleast you understand my problem and that is more than enough since im tired of wasting money on useless treatments here.
i think i will do the complete test and then consult a good doc... and i will let u know the results soon.
(i dont have insurance so the full test will cost me around US $80 )
thanks

DTG, have you had any of the thyroid tests done? How are you feeling?

I have been reading about something that interests me greatly, and that is Calcium Bentonite Clay. It can be bought on ebay for about $15 for five pounds, but if you are in the UAE, you might not have the same access.

There is a book which is title "Living Clay." Here is a link to more about the book: http://www.globallight.net/Living-Clay-Book.html

Calcium Bentonite Clay is considered to be wonderful for detoxing the body. I've been ingesting it for a couple of weeks now and I'm a believer.

But it seems some people are using it on their scalps to promote hair growth, and are finding great success! I wanted to mention it to you because it is inexpensive, non-toxic, and cannot harm you. It is a natural substance, a gift from the earth, that has a long history of having healing properties.

Do a little research and you'll decide whether it is right for you.

Wishing you well...

i was working over time this whole month so i didnt do it yet and plus i need to get my wisdom tooth pulled out .. so it got a bit delayed.
thanks for advise about Calcium Bentonite Clay , i will definetly check this one out.
right now as my last resource i am using a mixture of
olive oil, coconut oil, mustard oil, sesame seed oil, almond oil, fennugreek seeds, curry leaves... all mixed together i apply this oil 2-6 hrs before taking a shower on alternative days, it has made my hair soft and my scalp very clean but no stop in hair fall..... so i will defenitly need alternative options.

i wish good health to you.
