My Cancerian has been plaqued by chronic constipation (2 mos). His Physician put him on stool softeners and advised him to drink more fluids. He's been doing this as well as daily exercise. It has been a week, and he is doing better somedays and somedays it is still a problem. Any advice on diet changes or lifestyle adjustments that can help? Thanks, PS

Has your Cancer tried some flaxseed oil(ether in concentrated pill form or in liquid), that acts as a stimulate(lubes the colon)? I take a chinese herb formula called Peach Kernel Pills, it works great on constipation, it also lubes the intestines and removes toxins from the body. You guys can try those ideas, you can go to www.chineseherbsdirect.com to find the Peach Kernel Pills.------------------ Sun in Libra Moon in Cancer Jupiter in Cancer Venus in Virgo Mars in Cancer Ascendant in Cancer I "FEEL" therefor I am IP: Logged |

I have found that having some fruit like banana/apple/pear/watermelon everyday can really help as they provide a lot of fiber. Yogurt can be another healthy addition to the diet if you are not lactose intolerant. it aids in digestion in general. A quick 'nip in the bud' for constipation is having banana with yogurt. slice the bananas, mix with yogurt, add some sugar/sweetener and have it.IP: Logged |

Yes, watermelon is great. It helped me a lot. Even Pappaya too. I have brass glass in which I keep water for overnight and I drink in the morning, that too helps.Banana with yoghurt does opposite, it is good in loose motions(this is what I know and used it too). IP: Logged |

Great I am having him on fruit starting today. I had heard that bananas and plums are good for this, but I didn't know about watermelon. I didn't know about Flaxseed Oil either...I kept confusing it with Castor Oil.

How fortunate that this thread popped up.. My ferritin stores and hemoglobin were taken and tested.. because of increased blood volume in pregnancy, your iron can be diluted, but the ferritin measures the stores of it... Mine are dreadfully low, (It's 4 and should be over 18!!)and so I need supplementation. I am terribly worried now, because I have to take 300 mg twice a day, I will be horribly constipated.. which is a concern with pregnancy anyway. Ick. So I am now eating iron rich foods. I already thought I was though.Blech. IP: Logged |

Don't forget the natural gold standards for constipation: prunes, prune juice, and saurkraut. Also, consider Dr. Schulze's Intestinal Formula #1. www.herbdoc.com It works on helping to heal your colon, because it stimulates peristalsis. You will not be constipated when using this product! You can also find this formula on e-bay, but read about it first on his website. I've used it for many years. PixelPixie Blackstrap Molasses is rich in iron. You can add it to a smoothie, yogurt, whatever you like. There is also a natural iron supplement available at health food stores called Floradix. I don't think it would cause any harm to your baby, but you can research it yourself for your own peace of mind. It's loaded with natural iron. Your body can't really use or properly metabolize the iron you find in most tablets, and they do cause terrible constipation. But the Floradix does not, and neither does the blackstrap molasses. I've used both and like them both. ------------------ Everything feels possible. Perhaps more is possible than we think. -P.H. IP: Logged |

I have discovered a wonderful aid to end constipation and indulge in chocolate covered ice cream bars!! There is a brand called KLONDIKE BARS! The day after eating 2,3, or more, I find an end to any constipation with no cramps or side effects! I used to do sauerkraut and also different herbals but the side effects were bad...I accidently discovered that this ice cream worked better than anything! They must put something in the chocolate covering! Love Tuxedo MeowIP: Logged |

LOL tuxedo you are absolutely right !! chocolate does have that effect!!you know wht, in India all foods are divided into some categories acc to their 'temperament' (for lack of a better word) i dont know the details, but whenever i'd eat too much of something, my mom wud warn me tht i wud catch a cold, get acne (they r supposed to be an effect of too much 'heat' in the body), or get constipated, or the other way round.....lol ILWL IP: Logged |

Pixelpixie, I was very anaemic not too long ago. I actually got iron injections but I stopped because I got an allergic reaction. Anyway... if you're supplementing iron, if you get an organic brand it will not constipate you. Alternatively, take spirulina, which is organic and high in iron. I think it's safe to take during pregnancy, seeing as it's basically a natural food supplement. Check it out first though. I take spirulina now in preference to any other supplement, with a separate vitamin C supplement to help the iron absorb. Aloe vera juice can help with constipation as it soothes your digestive tract and it seems to soften the uh, offending blockage... also prunes are good! Lots of water, and a hot drink first thing in the morning... Kiwifruit is also good because it contains fibre as well as digestive enzyme. A combination of kiwifruit, pineapple and papaya is very good for the digestion! IP: Logged |

In my E-Mail this AM I received a Yoga "tip" The tip was to start each day with a large glass of water with a fresh lemon squeezed in and maybe some salt to cut the acidity- said this helps keep your bowels clean and regulated- Also I am always anemic or lacking in iron. I was advised to cook in cast iron pots and pans and to eat a lot of 'greens'-not necessarily lettuce-but turnip tops, mustard greens, beet greens and beets...very inexpensive and also keep those bowels on time! Just remember to wash and wash them to remove sand and pesticides! IP: Logged |

Geesh, what is with Cancer men and constipation??? Every one I know has this problem!!Anyhow, I'd recommend apples adn oatmeal, but the other things recommended here helps. And lot of leafy greens - if he'll eat them. Coffee too. Plenty of water is very important. Things to avoid: greasy foods and sugary foods. Anything with refined sugar or flour - avoid at all costs. Beans and starchy foods, too, at least until he's regular again. IP: Logged |

Well, being a Cancer, too, I understand. What works very well for me is a magnesium supplement, which I take anyway. I just up the dosage a bit. If it gets too loosey-goosey, cut back. Essentially, this is what good old Phillip's Milk of Magnesia is. Also a fave -- Smooth Move tea that I buy at the health food store. It's senna, but a nice mild dose. I drink a cup at bedtime, and by 10:00 am, voila. I've never had to drink more than 2 cups to get back on track. Kells

So far, he is doing better. LOL, I do not know why Cancers are prone to this. My Cancer loves junk food and lots of it. I'm thinking that is a major factor. I've had him on plenty of water, fruit, and the warm milk in the morning. He is going regularly, but he is still straining when he goes. I ordered the herbdoc formula today. I'm also going to get the flaxseed and Aloe juice from GNC. IP: Logged |

tht's some improvement! but until he makes veggies a regular part of his diet, he wud be straining, IMHO try using whole wheat products, include more fruits/veggies, may be a fruit salad every day. or a smoothie with some fruit/yogurt combination. grapes/yogurt, banana/strawberry/yogurt, or just plain watermelon with ice, r some yummy ones IP: Logged |
