Let me begin by saying that I am not an expert, but a woman passionate about natural health and healing. Over the years I have read myriad books, websites, blogs, etc., on ways to heal the body and be healthy. It can make your head spin!

But what I have found is that most vitamin supplements are worthless. They are made from things your body can't assimilate. Vitamin C should come from citrus and other fruit sources, but should you query a vitamin company about what they use for vitamin C in their supplements...you probably wouldn't get an adequate answer. It's why you see no source products on the liste of ingredients.

Further, herbal products, unless certified organic, are mostly grown in developing countries where the pesticides, etc., are not regulated. They're cheap, so manufacturing companies buy them, ship them here (by here, I mean the U.S. I am not knowledgable of the policies of other countries), spray them with more pesticides, bake them, broil them, wash them, modify them, ruin them...then compress them and put them in a pill. Their potency is very suspect.

Even Dr. Weil came under fire oh, about ten or twenty years ago, for selling supplements that contained less than 1/4 the amount of herbal product that the label claimed.

Be careful. Educate yourself. Buy organic. Buy from companies you've researched. Make your own tinctures.

My research has led me to know that otherwise, you are probably wasting a lot of money.

I think this really depends on your body and your needs. Truth is, regardless to what you get, your body isn't going to digest much of the vitamins anyhow. There's a variety of reasons - one being a simple case of logistics. Say you take 1200 mg of calcium in one dose. You'll probably absorb 200-600 mg of that, depending on the type of calcium it is (i.e., how digestiable it is), what you eat with it, what time of day, and your GI tract health at the time. Does this mean it's worthless? No. It just mean that you have to remember that vitamins are SUPPLEMENTS and not substitutes.

For someone like me, whose has a limited diet, a neurological condition and GI tract that's not very efficient, I think they're an absolute blessing. I definitely can tell the difference. Without them, I run into various "little" problems like anemia, low blood calcium, leg cramps, heart paps, itchy skin, etc. that can snowball into bigger problem like overeating, depression, anxiety, insomnia...

I do look for quality products. Poor products not only are less effective, but they tend to tear up your gut too with the crappy fillers they use.

Ont eh other hand, often times people are taking stuff they just don't need, and then think it's bunk just because it isn't "helping." Yeah, well, how can you argue with that "logic"? LOLOL.

If you're healthy enough to get by without them - great. But don't knock for those of us who really do need them.

eatbooks, here are a few websites you might find of interest:

I am a huge fan of Dr. Schulze, have been reading his materials and using his products for many years. One of the things I respect about him is that he has allowed his formulae recipes to be published in various sources so that anyone can make them herself. I make and use his female formula, and have used many of his other products. His website is: www.herbdoc.com
Even if you never use his products there is a wealth of information available on his site and in his newsletter, which is mailed once a month, I believe.

I buy my herbs, cayenne, spirulina, etc., here: www.pacificbotanicals.com
Everything is organic or wild harvested.

Here is another site that has simply a wealth of information: http://www.mercola.com/index.htm

This is another favorite website: http://www.westonaprice.org/index.html

I hope you enjoy them. Of course, there are many others, and books galore. You will find what resonates well with you, and that's all that matters. Educate yourself, listen to yourself, and your body--it will tell you what you need.

I love to read, and love the nick "eatbooks," because it's something I've done all my life, with great satisfaction.
Namaste.

Gemini Nymph: Namaste. Of course each person should follow her heart and her body's needs. And our needs do change with time and age.

I tell you, they're even MORE useless when you take them by osmosis like I usually do.

It's like a panacea to see them in my cupboard, the act of purchasing them...
It's soothing.
Ineffective, but it's like.. Yes, now I have those supplements, I did good.
Good.
Yep.
*unopened, with good intentions*

I have HAD to take iron supplements, and well.. they work. They've made changes in my dietary 'habits'. They haven't tested my iron stores again, it's only been a week... but still.
