if you don't mind.
I've been looking into the raw movement a lot and I like most of what I read. The only health concern I have is regarding vitamin B12 deficiency. Supposedly, alternate (ie, non animal sources like pills, health drinks or seaweed/greens, etc.) sources just aren't good enough.
There are awful cases of it hurting not just adults but children, too, even in utero. It won't happen to everyone immediately but it's becoming more prevalent in raw foodists.
I've read the best thing is to find raw sources of dairy and maybe even normal, fresh eggs. However, alot of raw food proponents are very much against that. I don't even have access to raw dairy where I am now.
What's your opinion?

And I hope you're doing well, btw. How far along are you now?

I've been flirting with the raw food thing too and also wonder about the B-12 issue.

I did a little raw food cleanse/fast for a bit immediately before my pregnancy and it felt wonderful. I haven't been able to forget it.

Hi Eleanore

I think the main reason why raw foodists fall into a b12 defficiency is because they suddenly close their minds and they develop an unhealthy dogma with very strict rules which becomes an unfortunate impediment for them, like everything has to be vegan, no supplements (because they don't grow on trees ect..) ect..ect...

Vegan sources of b12 are hard to obtain, they are found in some raw seaweeds, blue-green algaes and soil, clay (zeolites)...however, they are not a reliable source at all, so an oral supplementation should be used if you are a strict vegan. So far, through my own personal research I found Krill Oil to be the best source that isn't vegan but also contains all the essentail fatty acids. It's healthier than certain meats and dairy foods. And you are getting more bang for the buck...and that's what health is all about for me. I am also open to eating raw egg yolk from organic, local farmed chickens.

You have to be careful with supplements because you must find a complete b12 caplet that includes methylocobalamin and cobalamin. Most only contain cobalamin.
I'll post an article about that soon.

I had a blood test for my pregnancy recently and my b12 levels are very good, I have been vegan for a couple of years now and I rarely supplement and include animal foods, like eggs occasionally. Keeping a healthy digestive tract is most important because if you neglect b12 for a long time certain people especially those who have digestion issues, IBS, and low inestinal fauna to begin with will suffer more severely.

Yeah so that's most of what I think for now... I'll see if I can dig up some info for you. Gabriel Cousins has a lot of grounded information on the subject.

And yep, I'm doing good thanks, and I'm not sure how far along I am, possibly 12 weeks...wont know until first ultrasound.

Hey Tink.

Thanks, Sunchild.
I appreciate the time you're taking for this. I'll look up Gabriel Cousins when I have a bit more time. The name sounds familiar.
I've read about Krill oil but I'm not really comfortable with that. Cheese, milk, ice cream, etc. and I haven't been getting along well at all. About the only dairy I can still eat comfortably is yogurt.
Most of my concern is geared towards our son and future additions to the family.
I'd like to go raw but I find it's just too much effort right now to make raw breads and crackers in advance ... and I tried and failed without them. Plus our juicer is on the fritz and we definitely are getting a new one soon. But that little bit raw (2 wks perhaps) was the best time, health and energy-wise, that I can remember.
Been thinking of getting into it again gradually, you know? Just adding more and more raw until the cooked stuff starts making less sense. We'll see.

Why does it not surprise me that we've both been looking into the Raw food thing lately?

Heya Sunchild. Thanks for the info. Are you becoming a heath food guru?

Eleanore I rarely peep into Gaia's Garden (I should more often. It's a nice place.) but a week or so ago I did and read your puppy vs baby story. I have a similiar cat vs baby story. I barely register surprise about these sorts of things anymore.

I think the raw food switch will be more of an evolution rather than a revolution for me.

Eleanore...

I forgot about Yogurt...that is the only dairy that still agrees with me. I don't mind the natural kind.

quote:

"Just adding more and more raw until the cooked stuff starts making less sense."

--that is the wisest attitude you can have on a raw diet. Just keep adding things in until other stuff falls away naturally.

Dehydrated, soaking and sprouting is such a chore at times, I get lazy and buy sprouted bread which isn't really raw but so yummy.

Tink...a guru? hehe, I'd love to be learned and confident enough to teach people about the benefits of Live food one day.
