I have really itchy lower legs, mostly at night. I drink tons of water, moisturise and am not near any irritants...so not sure what it is?

Any ideas?

It starts of really itchy, so I scratch, it turns red and bumpy.

It wakes me up and I have to scratch until my leg hurts, it's the only relief.

What about some soothing remedies?

is it bed bugs?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bed_bugs

Actually, there are 2 indicators in your post that its bed bugs

1. You wake up: you are bitten while u r sleeping. Bed bugs usually bite in the wee hours of morning.

2. Its starts off itchy, and then gets red and bumpy: Bed bugs bites r usually spread over a large area, and don't swell up immediately. The effect starts some time later, ensuring that the bug has moved away to safety.

Did you buy a new bed/mattress/couch or go for a vacation? You might have picked up bed bugs from a hotel room.

I tried soothing creams etc, but i found that i have a really bad allergy to it. The bites last for like 2-3 days, and the itching is unbearable. I finally resorted to Cortaid cream which has 1% hydrocortisone. I keep it handy near the bed. As soon as i get bitten i apply it on the area, and tht's the end of it. its magical. i don't know whether u'd like to use it since u r pregnant, but for me it has become a necessity.

p.s. I finally managed to find the one stray bed bug that had somehow made it into my room. There comes a point after being bitten for several nights in a row, and lying sleepless scratching your limbs, that your patience gives way to a steely resolve. To find the bed bug and terminate it. That's what happened to me, i'll spare u the gory details.

ick.. itching is sooooooooo common in pregnancy. i was up nights itching a few months ago.. once i was so tired and frustrated because i couldn't sleep from itchiness, that i bawled inconsolably... haha

there are indications that you should see a doctor.. something concerning your liver, but there are other symptoms to that, so i won't freak you out...

it is super common though.. one of those odd strange weird pregnancy things.
dryness? perhaps..
hormones? perhaps...
normal? yep.

if your problem is not due to bed bugs and is actually dry skin, then you could try evening primrose oil capsules for a month or two. if the power is 500, twice a day, after breakfast and dinner. and if the power is 1000 then once a day after dinner.
if you moisturise regularly, it could be dat ur skin is too used to it and gets dry if you miss out...may u jus need to let your skin breathe...

Isn't itchiness related to poor circulation?

evening primrose oil..WAIT!!!!!!!!
consult your midwife before using!!!

they stimulate prostaglandin production..
not good if you aren't term. but midwife will know more... depends on your body/cervix/uterine irritability etc.
sunchild, i know you'll be cautious.. but does everyone realize she's pregnant?
different rules and causes.

i took that to stimulate labour when i was overdue... midwives' suggested it.

SunChild,

Have you been tested for gestational diabetes?
This can be associated with the lower leg area, and rashes. ...

I'd go see your doctor, if I were you!

Or, have you been walking in the ocean, just your lower legs?

the rashes are because of the itching though.... itching 'til she's raw.

here are some links
http://www.ehow.com/how_3532_soothe-itchy-legs.html http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/womenshealth/facts/skinrash_pregnancy.htm

Yeah the rash only comes up cos I itch sooooo much. If I left it alone you wouldn't know I had an itch. I think it gets bumpy cos I make the pores inflamed.

I can rule a lot of things out, I think it's just dryness even though I do moisturise.

Thanks PP I think its a combo of dryness, hormones like you mentioned. My body is doing strange things.

ILWL Heheh I L'edOL when I read bedbugs. Tis not the case. Thanks.

Lotus, you just reminded me of what I *should* be doing, I haven't walked in the ocean for months! I may just go do that...its very healing. I will remember to wash the salt off though and moisturise straight away.

Yeah I have a massive jar of cold pressed stuff.... You can eat it and rub it all over your skin. Yummy. I should use it!

You know what is really funny.
I get babyfit emails, and for yesterdays was "is your skin really itchy and bumpy?" So I found out its a normal thing. I sort of knew that anyway.
