i went for my regular gyno check up about 2 months ago and they told me i had hpv and "abnormal cells." they said i need to have a biopsy done but i haven't been able to afford it because i had to wait to get health insurance. my insurance doesn't go into effect until 1/1/08. recently i have been getting pains in my lower abs (very randomly) it feels like a balloon is putting pressure on my female organs. also sex can be very dry and painful at times, others times it's fine. i don't know if this pain is serious, or perhaps just part of my overall "poor" health at the moment. any advice would be great. should i go to the doctor before my insurance, and what could i do in the meantime? thank you to all who reply!

HPV is the #1 cause of cervical cancer,
this is nothing to mess around with!
HPV if left untreated can and will cause sever scar tissues often times obstructing your chances of being able to carry a child siccessfully.

You must contact your local Department of Social Services apply for the medical program even if you think you don't qualify! even then, other programs can and will be refered to you. Often times you will actually qualify for help diectly from the state. You may have a co-payment of sorts, but certainly not the same as paying full price for biopsy services.

*If you are unable to find the Department of Social Services, contact the Department of Health and Welfare. As a last resort contact: [386] 506-5500 this is the main Department of Port Orange City phone number and they can direct you. Here is the phone number for the Department of Health and Human Services located in Orlando (407) 649-9748, I'm certain that they can be of assistance as well...

HPVs are recognized as the #1 cause of cervical cancer. In 2007, an estimated 10,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with this type of cancer and nearly 4,000 will die from it. Cervical cancer strikes nearly half a million women each year worldwide, claiming a quarter of a million lives.

This is some serious stuff, we don't want to add you to these statisics. Early discovery, prevention, and treatment is the key.

Get to your Dr ASAP. I had the same thing about 2 1/2 years ago and was diagnosed with Cervical Dysplasia after the biopsy. Ironically, my 18 yr sister was diagnosed with it the same time I was. I chose NOT to undergo the removal of the affected tissue and chose to wait it out instead. There's some herbal remedies you can take while waiting that will hopefully better your chance of it clearing up on it's own. I think they worked with for me. I had to undergo PAP tests every 6 months for 2 years and I was just released from the Dr's watchful eye in June this year - back to the annual PAP smear.

But you NEED to get the biopsy done. You need to know how "abnormal" those cells are and how far advanced it is.

I wish you the best of luck and I'll send some positive vibes your way!!

I went through this a year ago and I was beside myself! No one said HPV but they did say abnormal cells. I had to go back and get another test 6 months later, and thankfully by then the abnormality had gone back to normal. Someone here on this site recommended taking folic acid supplements, and that's what I did! Make sure you are FULLY CHECKED OUT ASAP and stay under the guidance of your doctor... get regular smear tests... and start taking folic acid!

Good luck!

You have a form of HPV that could cause cervical cancer later on. Just make sure you get your yearly pap. This form of HPV does not cause genital warts. A lot of women have this. Matter of fact, if you have ever had an irregular pap smear, or one that they call 'askis' you probably have HPV.

I wouldn't worry too much. Lot's of women have this. But, you do need to make sure to get yearly paps, because the virus can cause cervical cancer.

This is a form of STD. You can transmit this virus through unprotected sex and he could give this virus to someone else. Make sure to protect yourself. There is no cure, so just take care of yourself.

Also, with the pain in your pelvis, I would get checked for PID, pelvic immflammatory disease, chlamydia, or a severe yeast infection. You should be able to make arrangements with an OB/GYN. If you call and explain your circumstances, most Dr.'s will accomodate you. They will run only the tests you need, so that you don't have to overpay. They did in my case, at least.

OK, first of all - do not freak out!
I have had an abnormal PAP smear in the past and my OB/GYN nurse called me AT WORK to tell me that!!!
I freaked out and the result was that I didn't show up at the doctor's for another six months.
The next time I got my PAP smear done it was negative.
The balls on this woman to call me at work and scare me like that!
The truth is that quite a few women show abnormal cells on a PAP smear.
There are over 120 different kinds of HPV. A very small percent of the strands of HPV can cause cervical cancer.
Make sure you get yourself checked for the pains you are having though - you can even go to the emergency room - they cannot deny you treatment and you can always set up a payment plan later on.

Your story of being called at work reminds me of the nurse who told me my result... she made it sound like I was likely to develop cancer, and she really upset me. But when I saw my doctor he was very ho-hum about it, and he said that there was a 90% chance that my cells would return to normal within 6 months but that we should definitely keep a close eye on it. They did return to normal, and I'm still annoyed with the nurse for freaking me out so much. Cervical cancer IS PREVENTABLE just so long as we get regular smear tests and keep it under a close eye so that we can get treatment if necessary.

they called me at work too! and i had no idea what any of it meant yet, so i was very scared. i am calling my doctor today (finally a day off) to see if i can work something out. the fact that i've been dealing with on again, off again pains for 4 years though, and going for regular screening makes me feel a little hopeless because they should have seen something before. but i'll keep at it. thanks again to all of you ladies!!!!

If you've been tested regularly and nothing showed up, then nothing was there. It sounds like this is a recent development and hasn't had a chance to progress very far. The nurse who called me said I had abnormal cells - but it turned out it wasn't even that bad. It was actually 'atypical' cells, which is like the lowest grade of abnormality. And it went away. A friend of mine has had abnormal cells for years, and her mother also has abnormal cells and always having gross symptoms. But neither of them are at the stage of having to have anything removed. It has to get to stage 3 of abnormality before they will treat you by removing the abnormal lesions (by laser treatment I believe). Having these removed prevents it from worsening into cervical cancer. The important thing is just to have yourself regularly monitored - as you've already been doing. It's stressful and worrying when something like this happens, but I've been reassured that this low-level abnormality/atypical cells is very common. And as long as you know what's going on, you can prevent it turning into cancer 10 years down the track. Cervical cancer is THE MOST PREVENTABLE form of cancer. So don't worry!
