"Someone with scoliosis may have a back that curves like an "S" or a "C". 3 out of every 100 people have some form of scoliosis, though for many people it's not much of a problem."hi everybody i wonder if anyone knows a cure for scoliosis through exercise, at the moment surgery is the most sought after treatment but i have read that there are certain exercises that can give great results in straightning/reducing the curve. does anybody here know exactly how to preform those exercises, please reply. My husband has scoliosis as well, and the only option for him is surgery also. We don't know of anything either that will "cure" the scoliosis. However, he is physically active and fit, holds a Taekwondo Black Belt, and the dr's say that's the only thing that's keeping his back strong enough and preventing the surgery. Taking up yoga or anything that will strengthen you back is the only thing we know of that will help without the surgery. Good luck!! IP: Logged |

Hunchback and reverse Lordosis here. They say surgery could fix it or totally paralyze me. Sounds too risky. BlueMeenee thats really good to know your husband is physicaly so active infact my gym instructor who discovered i had scoliosis had a curved spine too and claims that exercise and bodybuilding/weight lifting cured her problem... but a few others say the problem with weight lifting is (apart from yes it does strengthen your back/bones/spine) there is a risk of fracturing a curved spine so it really depends on the severity of the curve....i just discovered mine so im yet to get a check up done, i really hope i dont need surgery. some people do claim certain stretchng excercises can decrease the curve and make the spine more flexiable... i will post it for you once i find it IP: Logged |

yes fayte.m i agree with you, it is too risky to choose between being cured or else paralyzed.. i would want to choose not to have it done than to lose complete mobility. i just saw a video of scoliosis/spine correction surgery on youtube ...it is just so scary to see what happens during surgery thats why i am desperately looking for an alternative cure what treatment have you done to improve your condition fayte, hope you are getting better here is the video..pls dont view it if you are sensitive towards surgical procedures like me or dont like seeing blood... just a warning so you dont hate me after watching this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhV6N2At0Bg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmvJ4sFxz54 take care fayte n have a nice day IP: Logged |

Thank you.{{{hugs}}} I go to the chiropractor and take muscle relaxants as needed so the torsion spasms do not take over and bring on the paralysis. It is imperative after a spinal manipulation to try not to let the neurological troubles bring on torsion spasms. I am still disabled but not bed bound as often as I was before getting the treatments and taking the Orphenadrine as needed. And I try not to slump at all and never sit on anything but a hard wood chair. No couches for me...that brings on ribs to toes paralysis. I also sit on the floor and do range of motion exercises and light isometrics. I hope someday they find an easy cure but for now surgery is the only cure and far too risky I feel. Oh yeah..swimming really helps but I have no where to swim anymore. ------------------ "Heaven doesn't want me and Hell is afraid I'll take over and start a rehab for the damned!" ~Judgement Must Be Balanced With Compassion~ ~Do Not Seek Wealth From The Suffering, Or The Dire Needs Of Others~ ~Assumption Is The Bane Of Understanding~ ~ if you keep doing what you did, you'll keep getting what you got.~ Everything changes. Fayte, I'm sorry to hear you're in the same boat as my husband. My hat's off to you. I know his back hurts all the time but he's too stubborn to say anything about it. He feels the exact same way about the surgery as you do and he'd rather do anything else to avoid it. He's seen so many dr's about it and the answer is always the same, so he sees a Chiro as well and does his taekwondo. He'd rather not be paralyzed by the surgery. Good luck with your back!! BlueMeenee My situation is compounded by birth defects and later being injured by being hit by a car and then an industrial injury which leaves me semi paralyzed at times. Add to that a few hundred bone spurs with some encroaching into the neural branches and scarring where 5 muscles and tendons tore and well...I am a wreck. I have found ways to work around some of it all but it is a day by day moment to moment thing requiring carefully balancing all I do. My sympathy to your husband.{{{HUGS}}} I have been to at least 14 doctors/specialists, and 4 neurologists and 3 chiropractors. I think back pain is one of the worse pains! Even giving birth was for me less of an ordeal. But given the choice between torsion spasms and pain...or paralysis... I will settle for the pain and spasms.------------------ "Heaven doesn't want me and Hell is afraid I'll take over and start a rehab for the damned!" ~Judgement Must Be Balanced With Compassion~ ~Do Not Seek Wealth From The Suffering, Or The Dire Needs Of Others~ ~Assumption Is The Bane Of Understanding~ ~ if you keep doing what you did, you'll keep getting what you got.~ Everything changes. I'm sorry to hear that, Fayte. We know about birth injuries here - my daughter was injured during birth by the dr wrenching her neck and her left arm paralyzed, Erb's Palsey - and one of my twin boys suffered a brain hemorrhage in the NICU and has Cerebral Palsey - which I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with scoliosis as well. He's just not able to sit up straight all the time and slumps alot. Anyways, my heart goes out to you. Birth injuries, back injuries - those things strike close to home. I wish you some peace with your back spasms!! <3<3<3<3 IP: Logged |

BlueMeenee Bless you and your children. Sad to hear of your children's problems.{{{HUGS}}} I have two nephews who were born with Cerebral Palsey. It took alot of surgeries and therapy, but they are in their late 20s now and one can barely tell unless they show the scars. Who knows, better cures may come in time. I have slight scoliosis and I don't have back problems. Do you guys have a more moderate form? I remember reading that book about it when I was young... it was written by something Blume (Judy?). The girl had to wear a brace and it was awful! IP: Logged |

Scoliosis begins in childhood and depending when it begins is the key to the outcome. For some folks, when it begins very early the effects can be devistating. The "process" of scoliosis ends when bone formation is complete, usually upon menses of female children and around the same time for male children, early teen years. There is no cure and for adults it is often a choice of lifestyle and comprimise. The only "cure" can be achieved in childhood with braces, etc, but that depends on early diagnosis. Surgery is another option, but with the risks of surgery itself, one must weigh the benefits and risks. My daughter has scoliosis and fortunately it started just before mensus so hers is not that bad, tho she suffers from decreased range of motion on the afflicted side. Scoliosis often comes with other birth defects as my kid was born with a severe heart defect as well. I once had a patient, I will never forget her, her name was Connie, who died in her 50's from complications of childhood scoliosis. Hers was SO severe that it comprimised her respiratory effort and after lifelong breathing difficulties, she finally gave in and made the concious decision to die. Her spine was so curved it actually squashed her lungs... Extream case, but the disorder ranges in varying degreese of extreams. IP: Logged |

Hi everybody...I have moderate scoliosis. I was diagnosed when I was 15. Mine wasn't as severe as my sister's as hers is in the upper back so her spine is much more curved (as an 'S' while mine is only as a 'C'). You can even see a small hump. It runs in the family, both sides... My mum, dad and brother also suffer from it... You wouldn't notice mine, only if you looked closely at my waist whem I'm weraing only a bikini or underwear, as mine is in the lower back. Doctors wanted to make me wear a rigid corset, but being a teenager, my parents couldn't force me into it... It was painful, I hardly could breath... I absolutely hated it... I couldn't lead a normal teenager life so I strongly refused to wear it. End of the story. Belly dancing has proved to be wonderful. I'm still practising... I started accidentally, just because it attracted me... The inbalance in my waist has corrected visibly. I soon noticed it... It's not perfect, I have still scoliosis... but my lower back is strong now... Exercise is moderate, continuous... that area moves frequently and softly... Initially you feel tha moving one side is much more dificult than the other as the spine is twisted, but little by little, it becomes easier as the muscles is the area become stronger and reposition the spine... :-) Try it... You have nothing to lose... I personally love it... Also espiritually and emotionally... My sister is doing a lot of swimming to treat hers... Good luck!! PS - Fayte... You know I love you, darling... Take care... I hope you are feeling better... IP: Logged |

Kat{{{HUGS}}} Thank You! I have been to the Clinic and may doctors. I was told it was 50/50 I'd get better with surgery and or much much worse. Additionally, since my inquiries, I have since had neurological damage, and invasive bone spurring, and severe injuries from falls, and scarring. And, I have had 3 strokes, and have developed other factors which would make such surgery far too dangerous. However... I have some relatives for whom it worked very well! There are several yogic asanas which may be useful in Scoliosis, like Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana,Dhanurasana, and Ushtrasana. However, you will need to learn these from a local expert in that field, and (cautiously)use only those asanas which suit your condition, the degree of your disability, and what suits you best individually.IP: Logged |

Hello, fellow knowflakes I've had mild scoliosis for years, with the accompanying, often severe back pain. Recently I discovered that the Five Tibetan Exercises eliminate the pain. I couldn't believe that a simple thing like that helps so much, it's almost miraculous I think it has to do with the gentle stretching of the spine during the exercises. I recommend these to anyone who has back problems of any kind, and it is also a great form of exercise. Plus, has anyone heard of Bowen Therapy? I received two so far, and I feel great. The therapist said it would help with my back, maybe even straighten the curve in my spine. We'll see. So far so great! I'll report back with my progress.
