Hi LTT ~

I don't know about many of those listed Deprex ingredients in-depth, but please do some reading on DL-phenylalanine -- what looks to be one of the major ingredients......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenylalanine
D- and DL-phenylalanine
D-phenylalanine (DPA) either as a single enantiomer or as a component of the racemic mixture is available through conventional organic synthesis. It does not participate in protein biosynthesis although it is found in proteins, in small amounts, particularly aged proteins and food proteins that have been processed. The biological functions of D-amino acids remain unclear. Some D-amino acids, such as D-phenylalanine, may have pharmacological activity.

DL-Phenylalanine is marketed as a nutritional supplement for its putative analgesic and antidepressant activities. The putative analgesic activity of DL-phenylalanine may be explained by the possible blockage by D-phenylalanine of enkephalin degradation by the enzyme carboxypeptidase A. The mechanism of DL-phenylalanine's putative antidepressant activity may be accounted for by the precursor role of L-phenylalanine in the synthesis of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine. Elevated brain norepinephrine and dopamine levels are thought to be associated with antidepressant effects. D-phenylalanine is absorbed from the small intestine, following ingestion, and transported to the liver via the portal circulation. A fraction of D-phenylalanine appears to be converted to L-phenylalanine. D-phenylalanine is distributed to the various tissues of the body via the systemic circulation. D-phenylalanine appears to cross the blood-brain barrier with less efficiency than L-phenylalanine. A fraction of an ingested dose of D-phenylalanine is excreted in the urine.

Please get and read this fabulous book called "Beyond Prozac" -- http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/0060391 510/ref=sr_1_olp_2/026-1355408-6720423?ie=UTF8&s=gateway&qid=1193939261&sr=8-2

Have you tried daily Fish Oil caps for a month?? Eating oily fish *at least* 3-4 times a week is probably equivalent (you can find lists online of what type of oily fish you can get locally).

Here are a couple other LL threads with info on depression:

Errr.....I have already ordered the Deprex. Now I'm worried whether there are any risks with any of the ingredients.

St John's Wort didn't work for me, Gotu Kola I tried once too.

I decided to order the Deprex because of its homeopathic content.

I have stopped eating fish because I want to be a proper vegetarian, maybe Vegan again too once I get it together.

Hilary Swank gained high levels of Mercury when she ate all the fish to build herself up for that film she was in.

*I have just started taking Redoxon again.

P.S. I need a product which is pretty effective as I feel I may have bipolar depression.

Intense cardiovascular exercise is the best anti depressant, ever.

Ask your doctor first if you're out of shape.

Let me know how it goes, LTT. My girlfriend believes she may be bipolar as well.

Somewhat recently while in a natural foods store, the owner mentioned how sad it was to her how people didnt realize that if they simply upped their intake of B vitamins they could avoid antidepressants altogether.

Most depressed people have a deficiency in the B's.

I've been taking a B multi, along with other supplements....and well, something is definitely working.

Get yourself a super B complex vitamin and report back after a week or two.

The Bs have helped me too.
So has flax seed oil and Evening of Primrose oil.
A folic acid and magnesium/potassium too.

I can vouch for SAM-e making you feel good. But I stopped taking it after the first day because a chemist said I shouldn't take it because I'm allergic to sulphur. The lady at the health shop told me afterwards though that's a different kind of sulphur, ie a natural kind as opposed to a sulphur-based drug, and the chemist didn't know what they were talking about. All the same, I didn't want to risk it.

How about Bach Flower remedies?

Or I could change the way I think and cut out sugar, which is putting stress on my adrenals.

quote:
So much frustration is simply a result of trying to think our way through problems instead of feeling our way to what we desire. How we feel determines our vibration, so until we change the way we feel, our minds will keep going in circles, digging up the same old grievances, glitches and gripes. If we shift our hearts open, however, light pours in, and then we can see our circumstances from a higher perspective.

This could be good advice for me too, LTT. Today I'm getting a combo of Bach Flower remedies to help with how I feel about things and also to help my vibration.

http://www.bachcentre.com/centre/remedies.htm

I might get some rescue remedy separately, but I think my main combo will involve Elm and Olive. I haven't decided what else. You can combine up to 4 or 5 remedies.

Aside from all the wonderful advice given here already, I also think that you would need to put extra effort into getting enough Omega 3 fatty acids and enough iron as a new vegetarian. Iron from plants is not the same as iron from animal sources (like shellfish which are high in heme iron) and it is not as easily converted into what your body needs. Eating vitamin C in conjunction with iron rich foods can help as it increases absorption, like spinach with red bell peppers or iron fortified cereal with citrus fruit or juice. Supplements are helpful but I don't think you should rely on them alone. Also Omega 3's (best sources of which are certain kinds of fish) are readily found in flax seeds and pumpkin seeds but you'd need to eat them regularly and raw for their positive benefits. From what I've read, the best way to consume flax seeds is to grind them immediately before eating as they go rancid quickly. Your body has trouble absorbing their nutrients when you eat them whole because they are so tiny and their casing is so "slippery" that they digest very quickly even before they are properly broken down. The cold pressed oil is good unless you're concerned about oils in your diet and as long as you don't cook it because the nutrients will then be lost.

Anyway, not getting enough of these two can make you feel sluggish and generally down (and it can be very bad if you are really suffering from a deficiency) ... on top of whatever other stresses you have in your life. B vitamins, as has been mentioned, are also very important. So is plenty of water and moderate exercise everyday, preferrably where you can get sunlight and fresh air. And lots of sleep.

I realize that depression isn't just a chemical thing, that our mental/emotional/spiritual well being is tied in and very important. But, imho, picking one are of your life to better yourself on and sticking through with it is less intimidating than a 180 degree overnight change and it also encourages you to move forward in the other areas of your life once you are committed. Holistic treatment (treating the whole you, not just different aspects of you) is most effective overall but it does take time to stick to your changes and gradual changes can prove to work best in the long run. Give yourself time to accomplish your personal goals. Respect the progress you make and add things to your routine as you feel ready. There's no sense in trying to be healthier or more spiritual or more [anything positive] if you're forcing yourself along the way and getting stressed out about it ... you'll just work against yourself that way. And you can do it.
