Hi,

Has anyone used melatonin to help them fall asleep? I'm thinking of trying it...

Yes.
I have a bottle of the 3mg dosage. It really helps you to fall asleep, although it doesn't make you STAY asleep, like some of the OTC sleep aids that have (I think) diphenhydramine or something like that in them (like Tylenol PM).
There don't seem to be any side effects..... my pediatrician recommended it for my 11yo son who's really hyper -- I give him the 1mg size.
I've read on the web about people taking as much as 9mg, but I've only taken a maximum of 5mg.....

Oh, I really want to try it now! I can stay asleep but I can't *fall* asleep. So...I'm hoping this could work for me.

I've taken tylenol PM and it would make me wake up in the middle of the night to make me pee, which was unusual for me, so I stopped. TMI, I know...sorry.

I got the liquid. It only has melatonin in it. Do you use liquid or capsule?

I've never seen the liquid -- I have a bottle of 3mg tablets and a bottle of 1mg tablets.....
This is the Health and Healing Forum -- so it wasn't TMI
I *always* get up to pee in the middle of the night, so that's not unusual for me

I'm glad!

I'm going to try it tonight. I'll let you know how it went.

The liquid may be good, because it doesn't have anything else in it. No fillers really. My stuff is pure....

Good luck, LN!! I'd like to hear the report of the First Night
I usually take it a half-hour before I want to crawl under the covers, and by the time the 30 minutes is up, my eyelids are getting verrrrrryyyyy heavy

FIRST NIGHT REPORT**********

It worked! Look how early it is and I'm awake! I am usually just entering REM sleep about now. I don't want to be premature and tout it as a miracle, but I've actually had difficulty falling asleep with Ambien.

So...I will let you know what happens. I would say I will know if it works definitively in three weeks. If by then I am sleeping like a normal person it will be a succeess.

Blue Topaz - thanks...that may have had a hand in it too...

LN ~

Do you know what it is that's keeping you awake?? I mean, is it your mind going over a million things on your To-Do List, or anxiety about something??

I take it you've tried a lot of the other remedies to settle down in the evening, like hot baths, exercise a few hours before bedtime, yoga/meditation, etc??

I've tried EVERYTHING.

I think my sleep schedule is just so screwed up from staying up too late for way too many years. I took night classes and waitressed at night. Besides, I've always been a night owl.

My mind is also very active, but I'm not
anxious, more like always thinking about different things.

Mostly I think it's because I've lost my circadian rhythm over the years.

Why do you ask?

Zala - I found it on the web

LN - I hope you find something that helps...isn't Ambien the sleep aid that is/was causing people to do things in their sleep they don't remember (like eat, drive their car, have conversations with other people)...scary stuff.

Just wondering if you had pursued all the *non-chemical* means of getting sleepy.....
Melatonin IS a hormone, even if a relatively innocuous-seeming one.
I hope that several weeks or months of melatonin every night will get you off your vampirean schedule, LN

Zala

Laura ~ I took Ambien for awhile after surgery. It certainly does help you get to sleep, but I also felt "drugged," and it seems to remove some inhibitions also

Zala, now that would be fun I hope it didn't have any of the other bad side effects for you.

A local radio station I listen to on the way to work would often ask a question on a topic and have listeners call in and give their experience or opinion. This was one of them...some people had some really funny and scary experiences with it.

It works. I am kicking myself for not trying this sooner.

I'm so glad it works

I don't want to take it for too long. I'm going to take it for three weeks and then I'll stop. I hope it really does restore your melatonin levels like they say it does. I don't want to take this long term.

Zala, if you would be so kind as you find the time could you join this thread Here in regard to melatonin use for "Hyperactivity" in children

Anyone else who's curious about it's use in this manner is welcome to drop in too!
