I have been having an intense craving for cheese, lately. I am a vegan and am lactose intolerant so giving into the craving would make me sick and guilty. I have had cheese alternatives and all of the ones I have tried have tasted awful like dust was mixed into the recipe. Does anyone know of any easy cheese alternative recipes or brands to buy that don’t taste like particles I would find under my bed? -ThanksIP: Logged |

Yes, yes, yes...Nephthys recommended the following to me: Spring Hill Cheese from the farmer's mkt. She said that the way they make their cheese, it is lactose free. It is not labeled as such, but the owner told her that it was. She said she had no problems eating it. They are from Petaluma. And she believes they have a website. Trader Joe's has yogurt cheese, and a Swiss Lite cheese that is lactose free and is tasty too. I myself, have used the Trader Joe cheeses and I would definately recommend them. If you're not sure where one is located just click here for their website. Locations across the USA can be found within it. ------------------ Sendin' love your way, "your friend in spirit" IP: Logged |

It s funny, but the same happend to me a few weeks ago. I m not a strict vegan, but a devoted vegetarian. Lately i tried to follow a vegan diet, but I got like you an intensed craving for cheeze. But unlike you I gave in for my craving. I wonder what s in it that creates this craving. IP: Logged |

i've read some vegan literature that promotes nutritional yeast as a wonderful cheese alternative. i think i have a recipe book somewhere with vegan "cheesy" recipes using nutritional yeast. the word is that it's very satisfying as a vegan "cheese". i'm not a dietary vegan; i'm a vegetarian, with vegan phases, but not since my pregnancy. i am a "lifestyle" vegan though, if that makes sense...no animal materials in my clothing, cosmetics, etc. kinda backwards...but it keeps me on the winding path. a quick search on nutritional yeast (not brewer's yeast) yields these descriptions from a veggie site ~ Red Star Nutritional Yeast This is the original, good-tasting nutritional supplement, rich in B vitamins (including B12), with no added whey or sweeteners. It makes a delicious topping for main dishes and snacks, or can be used in an incredible variety of recipes to make cheese and other dairy substitutes (see The Nutritional Yeast Cookbook below). An inactive yeast, this product is suitable for yeast-free diets and has a shelf life of at least 18 months. Certified Kosher, exclusive of Passover, bearing the circle K symbol. The Nutritional Yeast Cookbook For years, vegetarians have been enjoying the delicious, cheesy flavor and exceptional nutritional benefits of Red Star brand nutritional yeast. Joanne Stepaniak shows how to make substitutes for cheese sauces, sliceable cheese for snacks, and meltable cheese for toppings, fondues, and pizza. http://www.healthy-eating.com/egg_and_dairy_substitutes.html peace IP: Logged |

OMG YFIS! I didn't know you recommended my recomendation! But maybe Librarising doesn't want to consume dairy? (she is vegan?) Yeah, it's hard to find a good vegan "substitute" when you want a the real good solid flavour of a good cheese. Yes I love Spring Hill cheese. IP: Logged |
