I'm not sure if this has been addressed before, but I'm wondering what the opinion on the HPV vaccine is. The commercials are everywhere, and I wonder if mothers out there will get their daughters into the doctor to get this shot or not. Personally, I would be on the fence... I'm against most presciption drugs, and I feel that the drug companies are getting their money from us any way they can. My aunts have expressed that they plan to get their daughters vaccinated, that it would be foolish not to... ...are they being decieved? Are they being scared into this treatment by the overwhelming amount of commercials and pamphlets out there claiming that it's the only way to protect their children? What do you think? IP: Logged |

ghani ~Please have a look here so that you can have some conversations with your aunts: http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/001869.html Quote from the article: quote: There is no evidence that the HPV vaccines will eliminate all HPV strains or cervical cancer.

Thank you, Zala! That's exactly what I was looking for. It's weird, as I Googled the subject and it was pretty hard to find anything negative... It's so frustrating! I feel like the pharmeceutical companies own everything! And one of my aunts has been the administrative manager of a doctor's office for years! I figured she would know whether this was all bs or not. Seems like everyone can be bought these days.. Very sad... I would hate to see my cousins suffer from the side effects of a drug they never needed in the first place.

OK I am going to tell you what I learned at my University and I am being tested on this next week. The Human Papilloma Virus is a small stranded circular DNA virus, with a small genome. It produces oncoproteins* E6 and E7. E6 alters the cell cycle regulation by preventing the checkpoint from G2 to mitosis. E7 deactivates the DNA repair pathway. (DNA has an automatic repair pathway where DNA Polymerase automatically checks for coding errors which result in mutations in transcription, while DNA Polymerase is generating mRNA) *"onco" means cancer. So these are cancer causing proteins.(i.e. "Oncology" = the study of cancer) the expression of these 2 genes leads to cancer. These 2 proteins, which are expressed by the virus, have a huge impact on their host organism (humans). The result is that 100% of cervical cancers are caused by HPV. HPV can also cause other cancers too; throat, mouth, anus, and sex organs. Viruses are simply made of DNA wrapped in a protein coat. They replicate inside of a host cell and reproduce, exit the cell and invade the body. They are mean little buggers! On another note, there is an article on the front page of my newspaper today that says that 1 in 4 teenage girls have HPV. I suggest getting Gardasil vaccine if you are b/t the ages of 9-26. I think we've done alright all these years without this vaccine. The types of cancer you hear about most often are breat and prostate. I'm not saying cervical cancer doesn't exist, or that it's not one of the most fatal forms of cancer, I just feel like it's another bandwagon concept people are jumping on while the Rx companies exploit our fears. There has not been enough research either way to make this drug mandatory. Thanks for all that info, Nephthys. I always enjoy the science of it all. Makes a more clear picture. IP: Logged |

Just thought I'd add.....cancer is unregulated cell growth. mutations in genes are what causes diseases such as cancer. IP: Logged |
