I know that bloodletting used to be a really common practice....based on the four humors...probably actually did more harm than good to patients, opening wounds for potential infections, removing blood, creating anemia etc...

Yes.
But cannot find anyone these days who practices it and where to buy some new medicinal grade disease free leeches. If anyone knows where one can get the medical grade leeches, please let me know. Leech craft is not as primitive as it sounds. Those little guys can work wonders!

Perhaps the leeches have some chemical that has healing properties...or they cause the body to release something??

Otherwise all I see it doing is draining blood.

Apparently has something to do with healing and repairing veins.

Well I am actually looking into this to help with healthy blood flow. But I am not sure how to go about it.
I have been reading a lot on the net. But I am not sure if I will find something decent here.

Demi Moore is all over the papers here touting the benefits of leeches in the quest for eternal youth.

Apparently it's the latest thing in "Swiss" clinics.
And according to the news the therapy has killed a good number of people.

I can only presume they left the little blighters on and completely forgot about them.
They also work very well to avoid the "Cauliflower ear" so beloved of rugby players.
Basically they stop the blood clotting whilst they are on and remove the excess that is congealing there.

Apart from there ability to do this I think any of the other claims may be "Swiss clinic snake venom" ones.
In the 60's it was monkey glands.
70's sheep placenta.
And so on.....

As I read the various stories out there about Demi Moore's Leech therapy, she explains that when the leech "bites" through your skin, the leech excretes an enzyme into your blood that has some kind of helpful cleansing property to your blood.

I can see that being helpful if you are very aware of how healthy your system is. I tend to be anemic, but I don't address it responsibly. If I had leech therapy without building the iron in my blood for about 2 months, I would probably faint from the blood loss.

Actually not, one leech doesn't take enough of your blood to cause you to faint, or me to faint. And leeches don't stay on your body indefinitely if you forget about them. Once they are full to capacity with blood, they detach themselves and fall off.

I hear those leeches leave scars. This process sounds barbaric and unnatural. Our bobies know how to heal. I think leeches have been used successfully in treating infections or in assisting certain medical procedures. Otherwise I'd keep away.

I appreciate the feedback…… I think I have thought about almost everything except the scars…. I have to think about since I tend to heal slowly……
